  1. What about all those black 'scotsmen'? Jock Mitchell, Maurice McAllister, Billy McGregor etc.. Mick
  2. Oh & then there's 'chuckin' the chips' of course Stafford Joan/Tony? Mick
  3. and Russ, i agree with everything you said about NS, except the bit about "seriously cool people, who were dressed super sharp ", sorry mate but the fashion of the northern scene was and still is horrendous, theres nowt worse now seeing some 50+ year old woman in circle skirt ballet shoes and white ankle socks...makes me roar.. pre '71 and after '80 was ok but basically the 70's fashion wise was comical..........IMO
  4. Richard Consulted Craig Butler who's into those labels and he doesn't know of any other CD's in addition to those on Regency that Tony referenced, but went on to say that Relic Records put out some great vinyl LP's in the 80's although most of those may now be out of stock. Mick
  5. Yeah, how DO you post a refosoul clip? God knows I've tried but can't figure it out and its not clear in the help function either Mick
  6. Definitely Heartbreaker by HB Barnum but, probably the best two non-Soul IMHO are: Positively 4th Street by Bob Dylan: Yes, I wish that for just one time You could stand inside my shoes You'd know what a drag it is To see you (You're not worth the) Salt in my tears by Martin Briley You ain't worth you ain't worth the salt in my tears Treated like dirt I'm hurt I ain't hanging round her You've left me crying left me crying for years But you ain't worth the salt in my tears Ouch.... Mick
  7. Ian Ha yeah I remember those tunes from St Ives & Peterborough - do you remember these from around the same era: Heartbeat - Bill Purcell Ten To One - Lou Roberts & The Marks By Yourself - JD Martin That's Not Love - Holly St James Salt & Pepper - Esko Affair Tough Girl - Billy Arnell Stranger In My Arms - Lynn Randell Playing Hide & Seek - Eddie Regan Mick
  8. Ian My first all nighter was Peterborough Wirrina followed very closely by St Ives back in the summer of 76 (they alternated week about I think). I preferred it to the Wirrina as the dance floor was slightly bigger although couldn't get my head around the Theatre which was pitch black save for the DJ lamp over the decks (although I now know why quite a few people liked it like that if you catch my drift). My mate Danny and I had a motto "Chubby Checker for Prime Minister" - our fave tune was of course You Just Don't Know (in my top 30 on here). Mick
  9. Debbie Here you go. A few more from St Ives circa 1976. Top left is Keith Dunhill who was dancing behind Billy Whizz in the This England film (he has a white shirt, black tie & baggy jeans on). The photo under that one is Cheryl Bush who was in the year below me at School - always a well dressed young lady. The photo to the right of that is Keith again dancing with Mal Rose in front with the beige bags. Can't remember the name of the guy in the last photo (he wasn't one of our crowd) but what a dancer he was - a shuffler extraordinaire...... Mick
  10. Thing is though Mark its 'horses for courses' isn't it? £50 back in the 80's was quite a sum in those days & I seem to remember a certain person getting Troy Dodds off me for that price..... (oh and Gerri Hall I think)..... Those two records I didn't think were crap but just needed the 'brass' at the time - ah well ces't la vie as they say in Belgium... Mick
  11. Here are some photos not from the Ric Tic review but when Major Lance played at Hinckley. By the look of those people in the bottom photo (Steve, Jayne, Chris & Dave) substances may have been involved.... Mick
  12. The top two photos ouside the Fleet circa 1978 First photo on left is me (2nd from the left - very white skin) and my mates Blakey, Nick and Browny and the second just Nick (nice trousers young man). Bottom photo is Coalville Tiffanies (my then girlfriend Sue just in the picture on the left) Mick
  13. Debbie Finally managed to dig those photos out & after scanning & converting them so here goes... First off a a couple from St Ives all nighter & one from Kettering all dayer circa 1976 - that's 1/2 of me on the left in the bottom photo (girl unknown). Next, three from Peterborough Wirrina Stadium circa 1978 - in the middle photo check the scout neckerchief the guy on the left is wearing and the beer towel wearing chap in the middle (de rigeur in those days) - thats me on the left in the bottom photo with my mates Nick Jones (Portsmouth) and Tony Rudd (Wisbech). Next, two from Peterborough Fleet circa 1979 - me with a guy who's name I've forgotten plus me with Spike Collier Post some more later Mick
  14. Paul You may be right about The Kid but surely Joe 90 wasn't played as early as 74 - still big on the TV then wasn't it? Anyway, on the subject of instrumentals, it's a very thin line between s***e & 'right on' isn't it? To wit: Bari Track Harlem Rumble Frantic Escape etc...... Mick
  15. Well, here's a l'il something I dug up from from '65...... https://www.youtube.c...h?v=bgnCB7oni8o Ian D
  16. Does anyone have this & is it worth a read? Mick
  17. I guess the question is: did America invent Northern Soul dancing styles? Ian D
  18. Miss Nancy I saw Alison towards the middle of last year (around April I think) but haven't seen Jimmy. They split up around Christmas 2008 hence the reason why Alison was on her own. I believe that she's moved out of Yorkshire but Jimmy's still in Bradford. You could try sending a PM to Debbie Butler 'cos I think she'll know a bit more info & may be able to put you in touch. Mick
  19. And while we're at it how about this lot: The Fantastic Plastic Machine Six O'Clock The Kid Cartoon Candy Carnival A Good Thing Going Classics....... Mick
  20. I wasn't aware that RW had "discovered" any - he may have been the first to play some (the aforementioned FW for example) but most came from other sources such as Simon Soussan... Would that be about right? Mick
  21. Has anyone tried the UPVC glue method? I couldn't believe it when I was told by my mate Craig Butler but it works. If you are sceptical then try it on an old pop record or pressing or something. Paint it on (mind you don't catch the label), leave to dry overnight & then peel it off - et voila....... Mick
  22. It did sound like "bitch" but reckoned on "bet" when I had it but logically "pet" sounds more like it. Always thought that Jerry Butler was singing "and you've got a great big car" in Moody Woman...... Mick
  23. Toma I bought Stay by the Virginia Wolves back in the 70's (alright, in hindsight it's a pretty rotten tune but it was a long time ago and I was very 'green') and when I got it out of the sleeve to show my mate, for some unexplainable reason I snapped it fully in half - oh how my heart sank at that very moment. Mick P.S. How come you didn't come up to my BBQ last summer?
