Tricky played the Aldora Britton version of this at Sunday Soul Sessions Kettering and I mentioned the version by Koffie on US Bell I got in a Soul Pack mid-seventies which he hadn't heard of. It was mentioned in Levine's Rare Soul column in Black Music, but always assumed the Koffie version was not particularly rare. Can't seem to find reference to it on web searches? Just curious? Cheers!

Finally got back to the Three Cocks after being AWOL for a while. Great to see it still going strong with good attendance considering the holiday period. Big up to Goucher, Steve & all those who've become regular supporters and kept the momentum going. Usual top quality selections from all spinners - oozles of classy known and under exposed tuneage. Pleasure to play a few again as follows.... Enchanters - I Should Be Loving You - Delta Ltd Infinity - Keep It To Yourself - Fountain Jeannie Reynolds - Unwanted Company - Casablanca Marc LeRoi Cummings - Lots Of Love - Setting Sun Leon Haywood - They Just Don't Make 'Em Like You - CBS (LP) J.J. Barnes - Got To Get Rid Of You - Volt Ledgends - Gotta Let You Go - Red Balloon Bobby Foster - Where Do You Go - Select-O-Hit Leno Phillips - Confusion - Dash Cheers!!

Not sure if this is already known? 'Secret Admirer' appeared on this CD by the Unhooked Generation Show Band from 2001 even though the track is not listed on the cover. There are 6 tracks listed but 10 on the CD itself. 'Secret Admirer' is the first track and the rest don't appear to play in any order resembling the sleeve track listing either? There's a couple of nice early 'seventies sounding Sweet Soul tracks and a couple of untidy funky things. Can't say if they'd be older recordings but likely they are in view of the 'SA' inclusion? However, it's on Mr. Wonderful Productions and Jerry Green clearly named as a member of the band so the connection is clear. It was the late Steve Jackson who instantly recognised the 'SA' track when I played it to him. Not sure if the attachments will work? Cheers, Tony Horn

Looks good. Wonder how deep it digs?

Another car boot find which supports determination in the face of adversity! A box of house clearance LPs I was looking through, James Last, Klaus Wunderwhateverhisnameis, Geoff Love etc. almost gave up...then lo & behold......24 Karat Black..'Ghetto: Misfortunes Wealth'!

Car boot sale early 'nineties. Found a box full of mostly Soul & Funk 45s, about 200 in all, asked the price and the lady said 25p each. Having hooked out about 10 of the first twenty, decided to ask how much for the box and she said £5! Wasn't until I looked through the rest back home to find The Differences 'Five Minutes'!!! At about 2.5p I'd call that a bargain! Bizarrely, some of the others even had old white card sleeves with my writing on (albeit not with the same titles therein), but there were some other goodies amongst them.

Hi Kim. Only ever seen the plain one. Not sure of true value tho? They also recorded as The Chymes on Down To Earth BTW. Cheers, Tank

Happy days indeed! Starting getting the lists when it was still Groove City. Every week would just marvel at the array of unknown artists and labels on offer. Just absorbing all the info was pleasure enough even on weeks I couldn't afford anything. Me and my mate Phil Attley used to club together to buy the Soul Packs too. Feel sick at what we passed over if the first few bars of a tune weren't on the fours stompers or zippy floaters or too funky! As someone said.....oh for a time machine knowing what we do now! High insight: the benefit of knowing before it becomes Hindsight!!

Classy set Andy! Hope you're keeping well? Cheers, Tony Horn

Managed to get there once very late '73 or maybe early '74 with Tony Parker. Went along at the invite of two locals Gary Jones and Glen Stewart in a Moggy Minor. Tunes which I remember were Bob Relf, Duke Browner, Sweets, Exus Trek etc. First ever visit to a 'proper' Northern night as opposed to our growing local scene. Brilliant atmosphere. Loved the low ceilings and stone arches, better than the cavernous Casino IMHO!

Agreed Jordi. Definitely original vocals. Archie had a pretty unique voice. As for the instrumentation, that guitar riff just seems a little crisper on the ad?

It's the same with B-sides. You play 'em when you first buy a record however long ago it was and it doesn't float your boat at the time. And as the your taste changes down the years you pick one out just out of curiosity which suddenly sounds 'right' and you've got a whole new record!

Hey Pete. Shame you never got to The Mecca/Highland Room. Was privileged to have gone from early '74 thru to '76. Best period IMHO! Telling you mate. That place crackled with atmosphere and anticipation cos of all the new discoveries Ian & Colin played you never knew what was coming next. And for every new one dropped in there was another to follow you just couldn't keep up with 'em. Many still highly coveted and rare after all these years and still full of class. Ian resided over that room like he was king of the castle.....and at that moment in time he was! Ian's play-outs were the biggest influence on my musical direction at that time......tho' I'd question his later productions!!! Cheers!

Great 45. Tricky Trev spun this at the Sunday Soul Sessions recently. Lesson in not forgetting how much great stuff is out there which doesn't have to cost £££££££!

TONY OWENS - YOU GOT TO PAY THE PRICE (LISTENING POST) Tune! Got mine from a Steve Cooper NO raid about 15 years ago. Documented his visit in my Soulin' Mag back then. Must dig it out? -
Great shame. Only knew Tony from local Northants/Beds scenes but he was definitely a 'face'. Had that lovely 'hang dog' aloof expression but was the nicest guy you could chat to. Sincere condolences to family and all connected. RIP.

Yeah! "Soul Sister Butterfly" is a good tune which was a b-side of "This Time".
-
Heard that too Jordi! Did a double-take meself! Pretty sure it was the GSH version though. They sometimes tamper with things for adverts don't they - speed up a bit or equalise for TV sound?
-
Yeah great price. Great to have on vinyl at last. Thanks for the tip off Mark. Cheers, Tony Horn.

Road knights! Our cousin used to manage the Rushden branch for a few years. Crikey - forgot all about that til you mentioned it.
-
Bit late on this one guys....but anyone remember Ray Seams? Parallel leg with a pronounced 'flap' the whole length of the seam. Me old mate Kimbo will no doubt come on with correct terminology!!? Also not seen a mention of Porky Pie shoes? Modern equivalent probably being Camper type pumps but with very pronounced pork pie edging? Common in shoe-town Rushden. And our mum used to knit us tank tops. And dare I mention berets!? Me and Phil Attley wore 'em for a while. Oh dear!

Poll - A Which Version - I Can't Make It Anymore.... ?
Tank replied to Mike's topic in All About the SOUL
Spyder's is almost the perfect Northern "Soul" record. Dramatic, Soulful, perfect speed, superb production, tantalisingly short...however, it's easy availability preventing it being of that "Grail' status. Beats the sh#t out of Frank Wilson IMO. Love it. I also love..and prefer...Ritchie's version. Love the subtlety, different chord changes and like his laid back folksy delivery. Cheers! -
Hi Gav. I happened upon this looking for something unrelated a while ago. It is amateurish, but in charming way. Better in my opinion than a staged interview with loaded questions and answers. Being a Mizell Bros aficionado I found it a great watch. Cheers.
