Oi! Mark you forgot to mention great dancer, style icon, good looking etc etc......e-mail me Marcus as I have a feeling it's going to be heaving Friday and getting a ticket would be a good idea!!!! The venue is easy to find: A1(M), Jkt 9, folow the sign in for town centre, past longabout, 2n roundabout straight over and keep straight till you hit the one-way system (park in front of you) and there we are over on the right as you look straight on. Mark, I expect to see you and that lovely lady of yours at front of stage and getting down with the Honey Monster as well as me upstairs in what will be a rockin' good night - Taff and myself and Fingers have all got new toons to hit ya with but as you rightly point out it's the 3 main men that will make the night - and with all 3 upstairs in the Ghetto spinning Modern and Crossover for the first time ever anywhere it should be a night to remember!!! Oh and we're great by the wayMarcus!!!! (Biased I know) TheBigO :-O

With the weekend coming to an end and people planning for next weekends soulful fix we have been able to get a better grip on what the demand for tickets is going to be for Fridays event with Mick, Butch and Sam et all. In short HUGE!!!!! We have recieved over 40 emails requesting tickets for Friday (accounting for 100) and I know that the 100 Club was full of people saying they were coming down. If that is the case then we strongly advise you to get a ticket or reserve one before setting off as we have a regular attenence of over 350 and, having done the number crunching, if everyone turns up who says they will then we are on for another sell-out and a waiting list adopted to get in!!!!! Dont say we didnt warn you......that said, looks set to be an absolute BLINDING night so see ya inside. * Mick and Butch and Soul Sam will be on from 9pm onwards so come early

Have no problems whatsoever with lp tracks being played and inc. many myself in my set at the Plinston and Fingers is always trying to play a 100% LP only set when he's behind the decks and more power to him. As a soul lover I have no problems with legal reissues either (Kent & Grapevine for example) as I am at the stage where it's the music that is all important and getting it out there to the masses (Have been and am still a collecter though) and I am happy to spin a rare original (Allen Sisters, John Wesley, Mind & Matter et all) alongside a Grapevine release of True Image, Eddie Holman unissued gem, Little Ann and so on. It doesn't matter if it comes from a 45, LP or even CD - if that's the format it's on and it's a great SOUL tune - then it gets played! (I have a curent Plinston Monster that is a CD only track and no-one cares about the fact it's a CD.) TheBigO Current Plinston LP spins inc: Sam Dees U/I version of 'Lonely..'; Mary Saxton 'Losing Control'; Various Ace Spectrun tracks off all the LP's; Beres Hammond 'Various'; Countless Motown gems and Little Mama 'Barefootin' (CD Only).

Hi Brothers&Sisters, The family and I jet off this Friday for the rather nipple freezing -40c and 6ft of snow that is Minnesota at this time of the year for Xmas, where the wife and kids can sample the delights of the Mall Of America and I can be found, as usual, knee deep in shite, dust, the heady aroma of dubious leaf products from the staff wading through the racks of 45s and Lps that my little source has in his warehouse. Whilst Im away anyone that needs info on the forthcoming, and looking to be a sell-out, Plinston bash with Butch and Mick Smith guesting should call the lovely Kay on 01438-236808 where she will impart words of wisdom and answer any queries you may have. Have a lovely Xmas everyone and heres to a successful and soulful New Year for all clubs in 2004. Now, wheres my thermal jock strap?......

I think she is in fact white, remember reading a few lines in some Jazz book way back when I still had flowing locks and decent eyesight! If you like the 'I am what I am' track then check out Dana Vallery 'Never Let Go' on UK Decca (I think) which has a similar sound. I like it anyway and have spun it a few times at the Plinston in the first hour slot.

Jsut running out with the kids on the school run but thought I'd post my brief thoughts on the subject now.....Fingers plays a majority of LP tracks when he DJ's at the Plinston, both lp only and 45 releases on lp, and has a huge collection of outstanding toons that deserve to be heard elsewhere. He has a Jap LP with a stunning unissued version of Sam Dees biggie on it which begs to be heard and always gets a great response from the dancefloor. As a collector of lp's only he has introduced me to many great soul tracks and keeps alive the mantra of ensuring that quality soul should be heard, played and giving it's time in the light. I think that Richard Searling summed it up best by saying we are a Rare Soul scene, that is rare in quality, not just quantity and I firmly belive that it doesn't matter if it's a 45, an acetate, an lp or even a CD only track, it is the soul that is the key. Look at the lp only tracks that have been spun over the years from the likes of The Outsiders; Dynatones; Les McCann; Betty Wright; Millie Jackson; Williams & Watson...the list is endless. In conclusion let's not go down the 'should we or shouldn't we spin lp's?' route but unite uner the banner of 'Soul - by whatever means neccessary!' And now, off to the playground!!!!! TheBigO * One final thought re: has the 45 well dried up? Not if Manship's rareest of the rare listing (with soundbytes) is anything to go by! Quality toons galore that I've not heard of, let alone seen, and that's in over 25 years of hitting the floor!!!!

Not underplayed to us at the Plinston dear Ricky where it has been spun many times over the past year (and for many many years at other local nights B4 that!) A great track it's true but check out some of his hidden lp tracks, many championed by our own king of lp collector Fingers inc. his brill' version of 'Open The Door To Your Heart' (that's Jackie and not Fingers version obviously!) and many others whose names escape me at the moment :-O Talking of Jackie his Biog is a great read and rather apt considering the frenzy surrounding Mr Jackson at this time.

What the f*** is going on!!!! It's a top 20 of rare records spun by a DJ, whom I rate by the way, and who has a love and a passion for the scene that many could learn from, with comments designed to aid collectors and inform in general. This scene of ours is based and built upon the sharing of knowledge and the love for great soul music, music that is rare in quality not only quantity. Mark has done no more than carry on a tradiation that has existed since the scene was built in the early 60's. Commenting to assist in the hunt for the vinyl, letting you know how hard that hunt may indeed be. I have dealt with Benji in the past and have always found him a pleasure but I have to say on this one mate your wrong. I think Mark's right, it does just seem to be have a go at him month. I have never had problems with Mark, despite the fact that we don't always agree on some issues relating to the scene, and I respect him and his comments because they are constructive and passionate and he truly loves, as we all do, this scene of ours. Having seen some of the other comments posted relating to other topics I would say there are others who deserve to be taken to task other than Mark! Now, can we all back off and get back to enjoying this life we have chosen - otherwise my head may explode!!!!! TheBigO :-P

Well said Mike, too many people happy to post comments slagging people/venues off without having the guts to put their name to their work!!!! I forgot to mention on my posting (under Mark's top 20) that, as you said, 'Guest' should read the post again because I saw no mention of value expressed in £'s, only notes that indicated that the discs were rare. As people from all across the world read soul-source and use it as a guide to what's hot etc etc then surely indicating if a 45 is hard to get, a one-off etc etc is a good thing for those who want to get hold of it (or not in most of Marks listing - gutter!!!) Besides, the scene has always given indications as to a records rariety or currency value since the beginning (check out old issues of 'Blackbeat'; 'Midnight Express' 'Sold On Soul'; 'Shades Of Soul', in fact ANY of the fanzines over the years covering this scene of ours!) Now I've known and respected Mark for many years and this smacks to me of an attempt to attack the new Manchester venue he DJ's at (not runs!) I hope this isn't the start of a dirty tricks war, like those Mr Levine and his allies were so fond to use on the 'Crossfire' events recently. Why have you not attacked other posters to the site when they have stated record value etc??? (Eric Lomax is the most recent I can think of.) Right, said what I wanted to say, back to a normal life again with the kids. TheBigO

Just found out via Ceefax that Arthur Conley died of a heart attack yesterday. Sweet Soul Music was the first soul record I can remember hearing as a mere lad of 13 and thinking what a blinding record it was. Feel as part of my youth has just gone. Sad news indeed.

Come along and sample the collective soulfulness of them both, along with other very special guest Terry Jones and The Usual Suspects: Hammie, Taffy, Nathan, TheBigO, Ab, Leon and The OHaras. Mr Mischief will also be gracing our decks between 9-10pm so please come along and heckle him :-) Going to be another 400 packer!

Ive had a load of e-mails through this morning from very confused soul lovers re: the fact that it seems that both Lowton and the Plinston both have the same DJs on, namely Soul Sam and Mick H, despite both venues being at opposite ends of the UK. All I can tell you is that I spoke with Sam on Tuesday and arranged his breakfast for the Saturday morning so he is DEFO on at the Plinston this Friday (as always) and Mick H has been booked for ages so I expect him to be gracing our decks as well. I have e-mailed him to confirm but this still leaves me scratching my head as to why they were both listed. More info as and when I get it but for now as far as the North Herts 6Ts Mafia is concerned both guys are DJing at the Plinston tomorrow. Hope this helps to ease the head scratching and save another 35 e-mails landing on our electronic door mat! TheBigO

Friday approaches and the tickets are starting to fly out the door so if your travelling any distance to join us at North Herts No 1 Rare Soul venue (ok, the only rare soul venue in North Herts!!!) then make sure youve either reserved or brought a ticket beforehand to ensure you get in! The last one was a 420 packer so call the box office on 01462-672003 or drop us a line at nh6tsmafia@aol.com. Tickets for our January 16th event will also be on sale from Friday when we are joined by the Gods that are Mick Smith (his sense of direction permitting!) and Butch, spinning not only Northern in the Main Hall but also, for the first time ever, Modern/Crossover upstairs in The Ghetto! with Soul Sam, Taffy and Nathan. An event not to be missed. Lastly, all those who have been asking about The Honey Monster on the poster can make themselves known to him this Friday where he will more than likely Stomp in the name of love. See ya on the night for a quality soul bash. TheBigO

Ah, its that time once again to remind you of the forthcoming Northern Soul @ The Plinston! event being held on the 14th November from 8pm-2am and for which tickets are now available, or can be reserved on the door by calling the number below or emailing us directly. Our guests are the lovely Terry Jones upstairs in The Ghetto!, joining Soul Sam, Taffy and Nathan and the slightly less hair-on-his-head Mick H in the Main Room with the Usual Suspects. The Mojo Room will feature the regular band of R&B/RnS devotees in there and back in its new home of the SG6 room. Also available on the night will be the January 16th tickets when our very special guests will be Butch and Mick Smith (with Mick doing his first ever Modern Soul set upstairs) and we expect this to be a sell-out very quickly so get them whilst they are there!!!! The January flyer and the trading card will be posted on this fair site any day now, just as soon as Mike can pull his finger out :-) (On the subject of Mike has anyone else noticed his resemblence to The Master from Dr Who????? Could explain a few things...hmmmmm) Right more later. If you need to buy your tickets then call the box office on 01462-672003 or reserve them on the door by mailing us at nh6tsmafia@aol.com (tell them TheBigO sent ya.) Until then......to the Batmobile Robin............

It is an Lp track and I picked up around 10 copies on the 'Greatest Hits' Lp on a trip stateside in the 80's and I am certain it's lp only. Also has many other great tracks I used to spin at Morecombe nighters covered up culled from the first 2 early lp's. I think it was also reissued via Charly in the 80's. The US lp cover has a record player on the front and a target on the cover as well if memory serves me right. Check out the £1.99 CD section at your local petrol emporium as they usually have the lp there on CD format if you want an idea of what the rest of it's like. Hope this epic reply helps.

All 3 rooms saw heavy dance floor action, with an enthusiastic up-for-it crowd from the start dripping sweat and an electric atmosphere that filled the building. Even the fact that the Main Bar was shut due to refurbishment, resulting in the SG6 Bar being used as the main bar and a temporary bar set up in the Mojo Room, didn't dampen the spirits. Everyone received a free woven anniversary patch and a raffle ticket as they walked through the door and the usual warm greeting from the Sinister Sisters. The mix of sounds was well balanced and all the DJ's, the Usual Suspects and guests alike, did a blinding job. Current Monsters, Forgotten Oldies, New Discoveries and Complete One-Off Exclusives (Soul Sam had stopped off at Manship's on the way down and visited Butch earlier) mixed with those Plinston anthems which had many dancing for the full 6 hrs. The Main Hall was rammed, the Mojo Room saw it's busiest night ever (so much so that at one stage when Big Daddy Bicknell was on you couldn't even get into the room!) and the Ghetto! lived up to Sam's declaration that it was certainly one of the best Modern rooms in the country. Praise indeed. On a lighter note, the best moment of the night came for me in The Ghetto! when I needed to get to the decks. The room was jammed solid with people getting down (even Mr Flynn was seen up there at one stage) and I had to raise my arms above my head to squeeze through. Halfway down the hall I look behind and everyone was now dancing with their arms high in the air, quickly becoming the whole room! My pleas that I wasn't getting them to dance like me fell on deaf ears as I was carried along on a tide of arm waving, grooving people. It was a special moment - NUTTERS!!! Our thanks go to Mark Bicknell, Soul Sam and Dave 'Morten' Flynn who between them all played truly excellent sets, perhaps the best I've heard them play all year. They went down a storm with the appreciate crowd and truly deserved the thunderous applause they received. The Usual Suspects were also on top form and thanks go to them for their support to the club and for spinning those rare platters over the past 12 months. The dance competition lived up to our promise of being one with a distinct 6T's Mafia twist, which saw the dancers dancing to Mr Day 'Soul On Wax' and The Coasters 'Crazy Baby' for the first round. The sea of dancers was then whittled down to 6 to dance in the final and this is where we retained our Mafia vibe as they were then forced to dance to win to the cheesy Latin dancer that is Al Escobar&His Swinging Camels 'I Watched You Slowly Slip Away'. The looks on their faces and the laughter and smiles from the crowd that filled the hall made it a MasterCard moment - priceless! The winners of the cash were Carol in 1st place, Trixster in 2nd and the lovely Dave Hill from Slade (Reg) in 3rd. Roll on next year's comp and you have been warned! The raffle draw saw many winning CD's, DVD (Standing In The Shadows Of Motown), baseball caps, record vouchers and for one lucky winner free entry as a 'Made Man' to the Plinston for a year. Thanks go to Beatin' Rhythm Records in Manchester, Turntable Record Lists and Keith Hammond for their kind donations. 2am came around too soon and we ended the night with the Plinston anthem 'We're having a Friday Night Get-Together' by Eddy Jacobs and the place erupted with cheers, calls for more and one or two tears for what had been a brilliant night. Our thanks go to all who supported us, not only on the night but also throughout the year. The Plinston is only successful and as popular as it is because of your support and we truly appreciate it. Thanks are also due to the Sinister Sisters of Jane, Kay, Sarah and Jenny for their tireless work on the door, taking both the praise, chat-up lines and abuse as well as the money. Roll on Friday 14th November when we kick start our 2nd year with Mick H and Terry Jones - Remember, there is a reason why we say 'HERTS - FULL OF SOUL!' TheBigO * Footnote: As that grand old wizard of Modern/Crossover Soul, the legend that is Soul Sam, snuggled up in our spare room bed at the end of what had been a great night for him, how I longed for a camera to record his sleepy little frame tucked up soundly in bed with the Harry Potter bedsheets pulled tight around and Harry himself perched on the shelf above looking down on him! Sleep well SoulfulSam, sleep well. * We have had extra patches made for those that wish to have them at £5 each, available at the next night or by post. Interested? Drop us a line at nh6tsmafia@aol.com
