and whilst on the Latin vibe what about the Harvey Averne Dozen 'Never learned To Dance' JOT, class dancer and up there with 'Central Park' (almost 'Ordinary Joe'(ish) in style.
-
Forgot to mention Broomfield Corporate Jam as a class Funk/Soul toon and one I didn't know I had on one of Kebs Deep Funk collections (and tape!) for years before flipping over it when Uncle Soul Sam (the baldy man, lol) spun it to me.
-
Oi! Surely you've not decided to jump ship to 'The Northern Side' following the discussion elsewhere
-
Ah, here we go again, splits, arguments, bitching etc etc. Who says the scenes changed from the old days JTrouble you naughty boy, starting this discussion, lol. For what it's worth I have no problem with any style of Soul music being played on the scene as long as it fits in and isn't at odds with the stuff played and accepted etc. Hamilton Movement, Rokk, Trace Of Smoke and so on are all great records without question (and Andy Dyson I am sure Sam's spun the track you mentioned at the Plinston where we are a lot more open to new toons!) and all go down a storm with us, alongside other genres such as Latin Soul, R&B and so on. Playing Funk records that don't fit in would be a disaster and I speak as a one who likes Funk, deep or otherwise. Trying to force or belittle people who feel strongly on this isn't a good idea whatever side of the fence they sit on. Regarding Ree Flores I first heard this via Rod Dearlove way back in the glory days of Stafford so to me it's a Northern Soul record, I am not interested in what others may class it as, top DJ's or not. Whilst on the subject of the progressive Stafford era am i the only one who recalls that a) it started life as a Modern venue and was hated by a HUGE swath of the scene at the time! Quality records should be spun, regardless of labels imposed on them and eras. After all, and here I go again!, aren't we SOUL lovers and keepers of the faith, namely unearthing and keeping alive these unknown/forgotten gems? Let's just get behind great records people - wake up and live. TheBigO

Damm Johnny-O-T I hate it when a plan goes tits up!!!! At least it's the most talked about record at the moment so there's hope :-))))) Wait to you see next years dance comp, prepare yourselves.
-
By the way Mischief I'd say your the best cheapie I've ever seen, lol
-
Good choice J-O-T (surprisingly! lol) Tolbert but I'd have to include Trace Of Smoke 'Treasure Mind' or maybe Sunshine Band 'Fly Away' or perhaps Tony Akien & Future 2000 'Good Things', hang on what about Executive Force or......b****cks, it's bleeding endless and almost impossible, and I haven't even touched the 60's newies side yet!
-
I spun the Impressions 'You've bee cheating' for a laff - sadly a bit too close to home as it turned out and a few days after the wedding they split! I am available for wedding bookings etc but for Gods sake brief me first :-))

SOULGATE N14 — THE GATHERING! Hard to believe that it’s 1 year since we were all gathered together to say our last goodbyes to our dear friend, Randy Cozens, but here we were, once again gathering to celebrate the life, music and ideals of ‘a good friend of ours’. ‘Ye Olde Rising Sun’ was once again the venue that would play host, as it has done almost exclusively for the past 18+ years, to the alldayer that is simpley known as SOULGATE and by 12pm on Saturday afternoon the decks and sound system were in place, the DJ’s were beginning to gather, the pub staff were bracing themselves for the onslaught to come and the doors were thrown open to the best soul event in North London. Throughout the day the venue saw a steady stream of Soulies coming to pay their respects and share their memories of Randy and dance to some truly great music from across the eras and across all styles — stompers rubbed shoulders with shufflers, 2-steppers and deep deep soul. The usual eclectic mix that has been the trademark of all SOULGATE’s and that strangely works to help create that unique vibe the event has. Myself and Trickster (whose lovely and long suffering wife was also in attendance) drew the short straw and were first on. The man with the nifty appreciation of all things 1950’s did a great job mixing classic Northern from recent years with forgotten oldies and got the alldayer off to a great start. I was on next, spinning a mixture of 60’s-Y2K, but was given the usual treatment from those reprobates from Letchworth I begrudgingly call my friends — namely constant heckling and questions being asked about my sexuality! Despite all this I carried on, with my 2 young boys watching on at this their first experience of daddies rare soul world (poor sods!) and then made way for ‘The Ladies Choice’ Taffy. At this stage I thought now was the best time to drop the kids off at my brothers and save them from Taffy’s selection J and so I missed out on around 2hrs worth but returned with my lovely wife Jane at just after 4.30pm to find the venue buzzing and a good sized crowd in residence. Jo Wallace, Buey, Johnny Timlin, Tony Smith and the Master that is Terry Jones were doing the honours to an appreciative audience that included, amongst the faithful, such faces as Terry and Paul Cozens, Tim Brown, Keb Darge and Ady C, who was due on later. All did a great job but I must single out Jo for special mention with a great set of those beloved West Hampstead toons that had many of us trying to get a cardiac arrest out on the floor. 6T’s Rhythm ‘N’ Soul never sounded better and I for one was one happy, now very sweaty, punter! Top work and she’s a girl as well — go figure J With the evening session came the arrival of those 3 stalwarts of SOULGATE, Roger Stewart, Taffy and the quite cuddly these days Ady C and they didn’t fail to deliver. The dance floor saw heavy action, the atmosphere was as great as always and the place was rocking! Before he came on for the last hour with Ady, Taffy could be found putting his new moves learnt at Spearmint Rhino to good use on top of the table outside the pub. Let’s just say that it was an experience to behold!!! As mentioned Taffy and Ady finished the day off with a last hour of just great great music and SOULGATE classics, each playing 3 records every time, that included the Tyrell Corporation ‘6 0-Clock’; Futures ‘Party Time Man’, Majestics ‘I love her so much it hurts’, Archie Bell ‘Where you gonna go when the partys over’ and of course the track that is fast becoming synonymous with Randy, Bobby Kline ‘Say something nice to me’. Midnight came around all too soon and the guys ended with 2 blinders. The anthemic Arthur Alexander ‘I need you’, which saw many with a tear in their eyes as memories came flooding back and ended with Jimmy Radcliffe ‘Long after tonight is all over’ which saw Taffy and Ady joined by myself, Terry and Paul, Tony Smith on the decks and a massed choir of Soulgate regulars belting out the lyrics at the top of our lungs. If the great man was looking down, as I am sure he was, he couldn’t fail to have had a huge smile on his face (and more than likely his shirt off and standing aloft a table joining in.) It was left to Randy’s youngest, Terry, to thank everyone and say the goodbyes and before we knew it another SOULGATE had come to an end and the crowd set off into the cold night air, a little damp, a little tired but full of happiness and pride at what was another great alldayer in N14 and a fitting tribute to one of the areas finest sons. Roll on SOULGATE 2005! TheBigO * I would like to extend my thanks to everyone who attended this years event and who helped to make it a success but I would like to pass on a well deserved pat on the back to Taffy and to Terry & Paul, without whom this event would simply not have happened. They are a credit to Randy’s memory and something tells me the legacy of Rare Soul in N14 isn’t over yet. Well done lads, it IS appreciated. Photos will be posted later but be very very AFRAID!!! Aplogises to those DJs I didnt mention above, I was so busy groovin and chatting that I didnt get everyones names but know that you are loved and appreciated by everyone and I am sure someone will put my omissions right.

Yes J-O-T it's very good but I was particularly impressed with that guy from the Plinson's 4 page interview and spread...he sounds like a great guy and what a fantastic club and......DAMM! Still logged in under my own name, not one of the others :-))))

oooh, Mick with these comments you are teasing us - no? Are you trying to give Mr L a heart attack as he obviously belivies he is the 'chosen one'???? That said, have to agree with your comments as Butch is the God of 6T's Newies.

All great and without a doubt THE Motown group. If I had to pick a fave lead then there's no contest, it's David Ruffin. The man had a voice that could melt your heart or make it soar, even after he left the group his solo work continued this trend. Fave track, oooooooooooh HARD! The unissued Angel Doll would be right up there but then some of the other stuff found in the vault is just as good. It's a credit to both him and the Temps together that you could easily pull out 30/40 tracks, all as good as each other.

Firstly Johnny is the above quote some sort of new sexual practise I've not heard of???? LOL I do it from home as it's now my full time job running the club, when her indoors isn't using it for her freelance designing services. Hence the reson for the usual doddgy comments posted :-) Talking of which, can I just point out here JOT and Mr Trouble that I now see that DJ Casper's version of the Gap Bands 'OUSYH' is chart bound, obviously he'd heard we were spinning it at the Plinston and knew of our influence and decided to cash in - so NA! NA! NA! NA! to you knockers :-))))

Spot on Christian! A truly wonderful slab of uplifting SOUL that Soul Sam played me ages ago, if memory serves right, and that, if I didn't have 2 kids and a trip to Toys-R-Us planned for tomorrow, would be in my collection quicker than you could blink. It's sounds like this that make the scene, even at this time lol, worth all the pain, anger etc etc.

Oi, NO! My dad went to school with Bobby Vee
-
Mick's right, Queen of Fools an all time classic and much sought after in the old days on UK label, Tim Tam stomping Detroit whilst not everyones cup of tea in these 'enlightend' times on the scene, no one can deny they were played and welcomed in the past. Now if we're talking doddgy toons, omitting those recent Levine spins, there is always the Cartoon Candy carnival, Brotherhood of Man to start....

You mean people WERE laughing for real?!? Mind you, this has given me a few ideas for next years comp :-)

Agree with Paulie on the whole on this one. We supply CD decks for that purpose (also as a back up if the decks go tits-up on us!) and I have no problems with the spinning of unissued material, be it on CD or acetate cut from it. At the end of the day it's the music that is all important and if it's only available on CD then play it. On the whole the majority of punters don't care, they are out for a good time. If anyone asks what a track was then I tell them it's off a CD or whatever, I can't see the point of getting a copy of the label and passing off an acetate as a 'real' one. I think we all know this debate is going to go on and on, like many of the fueds on the scene in the past, and we have to accept that as fact with little chance of changing it, or any of the old debates (60's Vs 70's etc etc). Just a quick reply as I'm off out the door now.
