  1. I've been slow to get back to Chalky after the Dunk and Nolan P. Then a week last Sat I saw him again with Yvonne V + support at Gloucester. No need to waste words. These are some of our [ well they're feckin def. mine ] heros and to not JUST see them on the stage, but to buy them a drink, have a natter, shoot the sh*t, and talk about other stuff as well, is bloody fantastic. Just wanted to say to Chalky and all else involved ; great work mate !! pete lyster
  2. Jeanette ! And as to punish me more, I nominate this record as the one I hear more than once on most occasions, when records are played twice. Or more. Or maybe it's just me flinching when I hear it.
  3. there's some funny clever witty comments on this thread, but there's a real serious question here surely. when Cathy and I tell none soulies what I do , they're genuineinly astonished that this sort of scene exists ; cos' they's love to be a part of something like it but are just scared of being out in the city centre / late at night / looking different / looking too old / scared of the violence etc etc. When I tell them it's MORE than 99% plus free of that sort of crap they're amazed. But I believe one of the key reasons we've got this scene is due to that statistic. Where I live now, I wouldn't dream of putting a soul night on that was basically in a town / city centre.........with all the problems of late night walk ups wanting a drink etc etc. Even if , as most good promoters would I hope, give anyone who can't play by the rules their money back and tell them to leave, it means that before you chuck them our they've usually abused and possibly spoilt the night for someone. It's something we need to get on top of and stay on top of ; it's one of the few possible potential causes of this entire scene being ended prematurely. Or perhaps more likely being shrunken down to a smaller 'safe ' scene where door security can more or less guarantee these issues don't arise. But that wouldn't look much like the scene that exists today and has survived so long. Sorry for going on at length. Just something that worries me a bit. pete lyster
  4. L.W.J. whether this record is common versus not common....no comment - I'll leave it to the experts. whether it's cack or not, hmmmm, the guys was a bona fide ground breaking influential genius. i.m.h.p.o. of course pete lyster
  5. Sorry if this has been covered, but is there then an original studio / producer type acetate thingie ? or was something pressed / carved / whatever from a tape ? If it's the former, does anyone know who has it ? cheers pete
  6. Hard one to answer this, but the last lp I'd probably ever get shot of would be ' World ! Here comes Jean Wells ' on Sonet. Beautiful soulful tracks. Anyone like this as much as I do ?
  7. just in case I forget to ever mention it, I find this listing of the prices achieved, i day after the auction finishes, really really useful. So thanks Joe . pete lyster
  8. at least 4 copies Paul big fave at Soul Nights @ Bridgwater [ plug ]......but I only heard it for the first time when J.Joan played it at the 100 club, and then took me an age to track one down. I'll bring it to Dunkenhalgh [ plug plug ] this Sunday, if anyone's intersted . pete lyster
  9. Carms, If I'm following the thread properly, at Brighouse last month, a real gentleman / great guy came up and thanked me profusely for playing Game Players by Dooley S. Said he'd not heard it played out for the longest time, [ he may have said 20 + years, but I may be exaggerating here as he was saying what I loved hearing ], and he was so bloody chuffed, that I was too. Makes up , x a factor of 1000, for the occasional ' challenge ' you get when dj'ing, for not playing / having the first choice of the person requesting! [ Not a normal issue at Brighouse, for the avoidance of doubt ] pete
  10. sorry for butting in to this thread, but...... ........Paul Varisco Tell me where love goes I've never been able to stop playing this since I first heard it and got it all those years ago what a record
  11. I was intruiged by that version of ' Soul Finger '. It's got to be a cover up surely, my guess is it's really the England ' Band ' ?

  14. no it's too dark can you turn the light on ? a torch ?
  15. wasn't that the story for Lillie Bryant 'meet me halfway ' too. B.G. thought the intro was too similar to ' This old heart of mine '? Someone told me the release was withdrawn, partly explaining why it's so hard. Anyone confirm this, or dispute this ? [ Jumps into a bunker, awaiting a storm of corrections and comments ] pete
  16. At least 4 Julian ! best pete
  17. outstanding record - was offered one 4/5 years ago and umm'd and ahhh'd , and missed it won't next time [ within reason ! .....]
  18. Points about the time given to dj's are extremely well made [i.m.h.p.o. ] At every Soul Nights @ Bridgwater I always give d-j's one and a quarter hours ; for our first ever all dayer, this Saturday just gone, and messrs Guarnori / Money / Rushton / Ginger T appearing, they got longer. All did 2 hours minimum. Feedback from the attendees was extremely favourable. Just doesn't make sense to ask these guys to travel huge distances with extremely valuable records and then only let the crowd hear them for an bare hour [ or less ? ]. The all dayer had 150+, which is the biggest crowd we had at a S.N.@ B. ever. And that's going back 11 years now. Pete lyster
  19. I'd never heard it before I found it on the goldmine cd, then tracked one down [ which surprised me a bit as to how long it took ]. Played regularly at Bridgwater and the dancers took to it.
  20. well I also like their versions [ first versions ? ] of 2 other ' northern ' crackers nobody but me........and.......she'll never leave you
  21. Don't know, but there is a basketball team of the same name ?
  22. SOOOO RIGHT And if you can only afford one - then no home anywhere ever should ever be without 'this old heart of mine' .....poetry put to a dance beat ? i.m.h.o. of course pete
  23. is it just me , or does anyone else not understand the points being [ gently ] bandied about here? if you stick with an ovo policy, then it's not just boots/ counterfeits / lookalikes / whatever you call them....but also re-releases too, [ whether official or not ], ......that can't by definition be ovo ? it's not about whether they're legal or not ? pete lyster
