  1. Just acetate I believe.
  2. Simon could snatch defeat from the jaws of victory and often did. One great example were the re-issues on Columbia Special Products. CBS supplied them on 100% legit basis and I imported them into the UK. The first lot came from the "Baby Boy", .Simon "send me money" Soussan, who was getting them from CBS on the West Coast. He was charging me a fortune and, as always, would not listen to reason and offer them at a price that made sense. I was so fed up with him that I arranged a visit by Les McCutcheon and myself to CBS in New York when we were over there, and met up with the very amiable Al Shulman at Columbia Special Products who was a bit shocked by two young English white guys asking if he could supply a total of 50,000 old Soul records on CSP. His first reaction was "no way" and "talk to CBS in London". He got interested when we explained CBS London were not willing to do anything, but said it was not feasible to produce the singles in the USA and export over to us. However, all changed when we produced the singles supplied by Simon. Al rang up his West Coast contemporaries and got very upset that they were selling to the UK, albeit via Simon, when he was closer geographically to Britain. Anyway, the end result was that he agreed to supply us and the first order to jet into Birmingham Airport was 48,000 singles. I found some old paperwork the other day and there is an invoice dated 23/5/78. from what I think must have been a follow up order for 5,000 each of Lynne Randell and Shane Martin. And I believe the total orders for The Poppies added up to around 20,,000. Al supplied them much cheaper than Simon would consider, and so Simon lost out on a lot of money by being greedy. Just to reinforce how Simon never got it that he would have made proper money by being above board, years later Les McCutcheon was at the Midem music trade festival and ran into Al Shulman who remembered him from the the Columbia Special Products orders and so was very happy to deal with him again and ended up licencing him the UK rights to the Brunswick label, which CBS represented at the time, and Les had a number one hit at Christmas with Jackie Wilson "Reet Petite" and ended up selling something like 1.4 million Jackie Wilson singles. It is not impossible that Simon could have ended up being involved in that deal, but his "no way" scuppered that possibility.
  3. One weird things is that Lou Courtney "Me & You (Doin' The Boogaloo) was booted off the album and everyone thought that Riverside/Popside missed a trick there by not seeing it as single. Thing is they did, Robert Bateman sold me his 7" acetate of it complete with planned catalogue number.
  4. It was a long time ago. I thoght he said Greenhouse but if I got that wrong it was as you say some kind of out building. I was really happy to get the record!
  5. Once I got my first job I got a bank account. First cheque I ever wrote out was to Soul Bowl which I sent off but being more than a litlle bit wet behind the ears did not realise you had to sign it!!! Another time, and by now the cheques I sent to Kings Lynn were signed, I remember being desperate for a copy of Joe Hicks Don't It Make You Feel Funky and John said he had a copy with a crack on it stored in a greenhouse in his garden. He sent me the single for nothing and the crack was not that bad at all. .

  17. Carl Dene was the Catacombs DJ before Alan S and Bob Crocker who were the ultimate DJ duo - up there with Levine/Curtis and Darge/Hennigan As well as the last night, there was an all-nighter on March 23 of the finale year. I know because I DJ'd on it with Blue Max,Pep & Basil. I DJ'd there on the Saturday nights of the last year with Blue Max and Pep. Missed last night as I had booked an holiday in Torquay and that night went to The Compass Club in Torquay and met Bob Hinsley for the first time. Also in last year Bill Baker DJ'd in midweek and Oscar Michael on Friday nights. Was a bit special....
  18. Went to Catacombs and The Torch and both amazing, different size meant different vibe. Best night at either club was Graham Warr coming back from USA and playing for the first time anywhere on Rare Soul scene Dena Barnes, Epitome Of Sound, George Carrow and other discoveries for about 2 hours.
  19. Marie and myself would like to pass on our sincere condolences to Jean and family. Simon was such a lovely guy, and always so on the case that it's hard to believe he has gone, I'm struggling to take in the news 10 days after hearing it. It's just so sad. Simon loved his music and had amazing good taste. He kindly wrote an introduction to my book "Northern Soul Stories" which reflected how much the whole scene meant to him, and being Simon it was very articulate. One of his most endearng habits was always to be enquiring about things. He would, in typical Manc style, let you know if he thought something you had done was good or bad, but did so without any attitude, he just though it was important to get things spot on. I would know - from what Simon said - if the music at the "Summer In The Park" All-Dayer was going well or not. He was always right too! I'm going to miss him quizzing me about my days working in Detroit with the Techno guys, and asking about what was going on behind the scenes at The Manchester Ritz All-Dayers in the 1970's. When he told me he thought I had done a good job at The Ritz and that he had loved the All-Dayers it made me feel ten feet tall. Right, I'm off now to play two of his favourite records, Mel Britt "She'll Come Running Back" and Rhythim Is Rhythim "Strings Of Life" and think of Simon Lyster. Respect and Love to you mate, you are going to be missed.
