  1. Phil-LA did not just re-issue in 1975. I was importing from USA and distributing in UK after that and they custom pressed me a quantity, I would say between 1,000 and 2,000, around 1978/79. Neil
  2. No. John's never heard of it.
  3. I had first copies of this in UK, they came from Bob Catanneo, first got played in UK at Burtnwood Baths All-Dayer, Colin Curtis was DJ''ing and bought copy of me, so Colin had it before Ian at Mecca.I sold 100's of these. Neil

  5. Graham is having a think and will add some more titles. At The Catacombs at that tiime it was amazing to hear what he was bringing in from the trips to USA. One of his best finds was from a Chicago warehouse where Soussan had visited before, had himself locked in all night and done a runner. As a result Soussan (typically) lost out on a lot of brilliant vinyl. Graham's stories about trying to extract British rarities from certain London record stores are brilliant too. Neil www.soulvation.biz
  6. As Ian will tell you, his best ever find of records was in a Miami charity store, the shop had previously been found by Graham who did not have time to go through everything. One night at the Catacombs Graham told Ian the address for the store and when Ian eventually got there the records were still there. Graham is definely very unheralded for what he did, in the same way the Catacombs never gets the credit it deserves.
  7. Which ones Tony?. Let me ask Graham about them. Don't forget Ian and Les Cokell were frequently coming down to the Catacombs and hearing records they hadn't got at the Mecca.
  8. I can't post it any larger but go to the web site www.soulvation.biz and look for it as "pop up" on Lea Hall page reference Catacombs DJ get together in July. Neil
  9. Hi Julian, Graham is definitely saying he discovered everything on the list on trips to USA from 1970 to 1973,except for Soul Twins which he found first copy in Hammersmith and then 100's of copies (many scratched) later in Miami. I will pass any queries on to him and am sure he will come on Soul Source with response. I was talking to him last week and he said he found 3 copies of Sam & Kitty and nobody liked it. Neil
  10. Ian The vocalist on "Agent For Love" is Jackie Deane, she was vocalist on the vocal to "Strings Of Life" which Defected had a hit with some years ago. The record was made in Alcester, near Stratford-Upon-Avon, very much a tongue-in-cheek kind of thing. I gave first ever play to "Agent For Love" at Ritz all-nighter some years back and Guy Hennigan came running up thinking it was real...if it was good enough for Guy... Neil
  11. We have just updated the Soulvation web site www.soulvation.biz and to tie in with Graham Warr's appearance at the annual ex-Catacombs Dj's bash on Saturday July 12 (nothing to do with the owners of the Catacombs copyright!) at Soulvation @ Lea Hall Club, Rugeley have put up a list from Graham of just some of the records he discovered on trips to the USA and brought back to the UK with them getting their first plays in Temple Street, Wolverhampton. I was a regular at the Catacombs and can remember the anticipation when Graham was due back from the States but never realised just how many quality 45's he discovered. Graham must be the most underestimated DJ and record finder ever on the Northern scene? And as he didn't bother with the All-dayers etc that much, probably on the jazz-funk scene too. This is the list from the web site..The amazing thing is Graham can recall where every record was found and has a story to go with each find.
  12. Trying again.... [ To listen to "Give Me Another Chance" go on to www.soulvation.biz Go to SOUNDS section and it's on the March Soulvatiion Cassette. Neil PEARL_JONES___LABEL_STOCK.pdf

  16. Latest news on the upcoming Newquay Weekender from Neil Rushton Everything looking good for the 4th Newquay Weekender from April 3 to 6. When we started the event we hoped the combination of Cornwall and Soul Music would result in something different from the other Weekenders and that has certainly proved the case. It's not the biggest or brashest Weekender but it is small and friendly - - everyone seems to spend the weekend smiling The music is always diverse (if you are looking for the same old, same old, you won't get it here) and uplifting. A lot of people take advantage of the surroundings to go out exploring Cornwall in the day and come back well up for the evening sessions. So far we have always enjoyed great weather. The DJ's love the event - Mick H is getting as many of his crowd as he can to make the trek down here - and they all play what they want, without any guidelines from the promoters. Thursday night is an open decks night, anyone who wants to play should PM me. As usual the music is at The Griffin Hotel with the Northern/Rare side of things downstairs in the (very) atmospheric cellar bar and there is an alternative room upstairs which over the weekend will feature everything from Crossover, Modern Soul, Classic Disco, Jazz-Funk and Soulful House. Weekend passes are £20 each. This time around we are also taking over the nearby Cliffdene Hotel for accommodation. Bed, breakfast and dinner for Friday and Saturday, with weekend pass included, is £99 which we think is great value for money. You can book securely on line or by post. For more info please see flyer and visit the web site (link at bottom) website http://www.soulvation.biz

  18. Have had a great response to the Tyrone Ashley album "Let Me Be your Man" on the fatbeats label. This USA release from last year is Ist issue of an album recorded for Phil-L.A-of Soul in 1969 but never released due to contactual problems. It includes the monster Northern track "I Can't Stay Away" which is simply awesome, one of the best "stuck in the vaults" discoveries for years. Have had people asking if it is sold out or still in stock? I still have copies @ £15 each including postage and packing. For Pay Pal address is sales@soulvation.biz If you want to pay by cheque please PM me for details. All the Best, Neil
  19. Yes had a great response to the Tyrone Ashley album. What a tune to be stuck in the vaults for so many years! Tyrone/Sammy came along with Ian Levine to a Manchester Ritz all-dayer in the 70's and I remember going out for a steak with him,I was just starting Inferno and asked about masters he had access to and expressed interest in releasing "Job Opening" but he never mentioned he had a Phil LA unreleased album at home. Had a few people PM'ing me asking if I have any of the Tyrone Ashley left - yes, the track is so brilliant I brought in a reasonable quantity and never mind the sales pitch, just get yourself a copy, this is a top top tune! Cheers, Neil

Definitve Willie Tee collection...all his Northern and Crossover biggies on Nola, Alantic, Gatur, Bonatemp - 2002 reissue. Note these came in at lower price than anticipated so all pre-orders for £20 - am sending out with £5 refund. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- LET ME BE YOUR MAN - TYRONE ASHLEY'S FUNKY MUSIC MACHINE (FAT BEATS) £15 Released last year but seems to have been missed by most people, this is an album recorded for Phil La in 1968 but never released, tapes survived a house fire!Includes inst of the brilliant "I Want My Baby Back" but what makes it essential purchase is the absolutely amazing "I Can't Stay Away".
