, including the first ever 100% legitimate release of "So Soon" (as erroneously ascribed to Donnie Elbert on Joe Boy, but in reality Van's demo). I think it is worth pointing out that "So Soon" was released by Glenn on Joe Boy and credited to Donnie Elbert in good faith.Glenn licenced it from Norman Jopling, who Tony will know is someone of great integrity. What happened was that in the late 60's Donnie was signed to a production company owned by Norman and Pete Meaden and when he left as compensation he gave them the rights to "So Soon" which he claimed was by him! The madness is told in the forthcoming book NORTHERN SOUL STORIES - have enclosed it on pdf attachment below if anyone wants to read it. The story captures how mad the 60's must have been with guns, arrests,a court appearance and being sectioned! I had great pleasure of meeting Van McCoy at a music convention in late 70's and was also in process of licensing some masters - via Bill Downs his partner in Vando (VAN McCoy Bill DOwns) from him for Inferno. I was hoping to interview Van for Black Echoes but it never happened. The Book - So Soon - Donnie Elbert.pdf The Book - So Soon - Donnie Elbert.pdf

Have been asked which mix of Lucky Lucky Me - Marvin Gaye is on the single? It is the original 60's mix as on the Marvin Gaye "Lost & Found" CD and defintiely NOT the UK remix that Motown put out as a UK single. -

A SIDE - TRUST IN ME - JACKIE ROSS Her absolute jewel, sounds better every time your hear it, am so pleased that this wonderful record will get its first ever release on the seven inch single given away with the book. Um - I haven't done any other books unless you mean the Booklet that was part of the Sanctuary "Keeping The Box" set? The new jobbie is a proper stand alone 256 full cololur book. Been luckily to get some great interviews - some great stuff from the 60's about Guy Stevens at The Scene, Dan Penn blagging his way into Fame to watch Otis Redding produce "Sweet Soul Music", Eddie Levy talking about his Dad owning Oriole Records and Berry Gordy falling asleep at their flat after Sunday lunch in London, Norman Jopling on being "the world's first R'n'B journalist", Tony Cummings on nicking records and the start of the Soul fanzines, Donnie Elbert being arrested for being found with a gun during a police raid, Emperor Rosko making a prat of himself, Sidney Barnes on forming Geo-Si-Mic productions with Mike Terry and George Clinton, Golden World promotion man Casablanca on the ways they tricked the radio stations into playing Ric-Tic singles, Georgie Fame discovering jazz and how his Live album had to be re-recorded on a Tuesday night as the tape recorders didn't work on the Saturday which has down in legend as the night it was recorded....the list goes on. Seventies section being finished now...John Manship's stories on the drugged up cat that led to him finding the first copy of Larry Clinton and the lad who in the middle of Wigan Casino looked at a covered up copy of "Trypt On Love" and memorised the matrix number pretty good too, and the Levine haters will no doubt be entertained by his stories of death threats and clearing the Higland Room with the first UK play of "You Left Me" - The Admirations because the crowd wanted the likes of The Carstairs. And Graham Warr's account of finding records in Miami in 1971 is jaw dropping. What I could so with - some mad stories about the druggy side of things in the 70's.] Thanks Neil

My first big money purchase turned up from America and was one-sided. No One Can Else Can Take Your Place - The Inspirations (Breakthrough) 74/75 - from Bob Catanneo in Daly City,San Fancisco. Cost me £30 which was a lot at the time and Bob ,who I was getting loads of stuff from, insisted I buy it blind, wouldn't even play it down phone, but insisted it would blow my mind - which of course it did.Was first copy in the UK and I used to play it at the Ritz All-Dayers until persuaded by the North Wales crew I should sell it, probably in 76, for £125 I think. Almost persuaded the owner of the label to sell me another copy for $50 in 1979 when at his place in LA, but in the end felt lucky to get out of the place in one piece, never mind without the record.

Pete Lyster is Pete Lyster, from Manchester originally and now lives in Somerset where he and Cathy promote the excellent "Soul Nights @ Bridgwater" A top top bloke and DJ and has one of the best Soul collections - British and USA - imaginable. He is not a liar or confused. The quote comes from pre 1971 - when he was a kid in Manchester, Pete used to catch a bus on a Saturday morning to Ralph's and stand in the shop for hours watching what was going on and that's when he saw the centres knocked out.He loves his British stuff so much the horror of it has never left him!
