Well the marathon is almost over and all being well Glenn Gunton will have finiished laying out the pages for the book next week. There is so much good stuff from Al we have now added 48 pages, including 32 page of some of his actual press releases. And there's also now snippets from when Al was in charge of publicity at Stax after he left Motown (he later looked after PR for James Brown, Aretha Franklin and Invictus, but that's another load of stories!), . If you're into Soul this book will give you goosebumps. I am constantly amazed to be getting e-mails from the guy who was Berry Gordy's first employee. Al is a lovely guy and full of energy now aged 70, goodness what he was like in his 20's!. Hopefully the book reflects the way he was pluggd into the mains at Hitsville. Very sad news. She had one of the great voices, revered by Soul., Disco and House fans alike. Love her version of "All About The Papers'" . When I was running Network she rang up to complain that she had been sampled on a record we had released, I explained it was licenced from Salsoul and all legit ,but she was having none of it, and I got the full effect of THAT VOICE as really shouted. If I had taped her rant it would have been one of the great acapellas! She checked everything out with Salsoul and was fine afterwards. Will play "Dreamin;" at Radcliffe tomorrow night dedicated to her. All The Best, Neil.

This is a great release. And not only is it now for the first time available on a seven inch single, instead of only being an LP track, it's on a fantastic sounding LOUD seven inch! Those nice people at Motown//Universal have agreed to licence a collectors seven-inch 45 to go with the first 500 copies of the forthcoming Al Abrams book "Hype & Soul" HITSVILLE USA - GREETINGS TO TAMLA MOTOWN APPRECIATION SOCIETY This is the disc produced by Motown and given to Dave Godin to hand out to members of his TMAS after his famous visit to Hitsville. Features snippets of tracks/speech from Margaret Phelps,Berry Gordy Jnr, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, Stevie Wonder,Marvin Gaye, The Marvelettes, The Temptations, Martha & The Vandellas, Eddie Holland, Kim Weston, The Supremes. We will be reproducing the original label design and it will be colour vinyl. Al is very complimentary about Dave Godin in the book, so we thought this would be a nice touch. The mammoth job of getting the book ready is almost over and all the pages are due to be laid out by the end of this month. We are aiming to publish by the end of May. Al has supplied a mindblowing pile of archive documents and photographs to go with a series of essays he has written about this time at Motown. He became Berry Gordy's first employee in 1959, when he was just 18,and after being given the job of promoting records at record hops & radio stations he became Motown's director of publicity.It was Al who came up with the phrase "The Sound Of Young America" and his recollections are amazing (taking the first acetate of "Money" to New York and getting Alan Freed to play it, driving Della Reese from Detroit to Windsor and a cop on a motor bike stopping them and racially abusing Della, almost losing his job over the Tommy Good march on Hitsville, being smuggled under age into the 20 Grand Club and sitting with Berry Gordy, Jackie Wilson and Sir Mack Rice, taking a very young Little Stevie Wonder to a promotion event and getting him to sing to the kids in the neighbourhood from the porch of Al's house, the list goes on and on !!!) Al writes so well it makes you think you are there with him. Hype & Soul will be published by Soulvation and will be hardback with a dust cover. Here's news of an event with its' own distinctive flavour. The Long Soulful Good Friday All-Dayer takes place in a luxury soundproofed marquee at The Fox & Coney in South Cave, a beautiful village in the East Riding Of Yorkshire on Bank Holiday Good Friday April 22 from 3pm till 2am. DJ's in the marquee are Mick H, Pete Lyster, Arthur Fenn, Bob Hinsley, Ginger Taylor,Nige Brown, Steve Gainey and Neil Rushton, all on the crystal clear Soul Kandi sound system. Hull Soul Club will also be holding a session in a separate indoor room from 7pm. The Fox & Coney is run by Vinny Garcia, formerly of Drizabone (he was co-writer and co-producer) and we ran a Modern Soul All-Dayer in the marquee on Jan 2. It was such a success that we are doing a follow up on Easter Sunday, and for good measure decided to throw in this Rare/Northern All-Dayer on the Friday. On arrival everyone will receive a complimentary drink and Bar-B-Q. There is also free transport between the venue and local hotels. The rooms at The Fox & Coney on Good Friday have already all been booked thanks to word of mouth, but rooms are available at the nearby South Cave Travelodge. The Fox & Coney is easy to find, just get on the M62 from Leeds to Hull, and about 12 miles before Hull look out for signs for South Cave. I promtoted hte Ritz All-Dayer featuring Chris Hill.The date was Sunday February 26,1978. The other DJ's were Ian Levine, Colin Curtis and myself. For some reason I can still vividly remember playing "Heads" - Bob James that day. Chris was superb and went down really well with our crowd. I was very impressed. He thought our sound system was shite! He brought Fred Dove from WEA up with him and I can remember them being stunned when Ian Levine did his spot and olayed "Shame" - Evelyn "Champagne" King. Neither they or anyone else had heard it before, somehow Ian had got an exclusive on what has gone on to be one fo the great classics. Ian and Chris are great mates. Chris played some other Northern based venues, but the Ritz was the first one. The first 100 admissions to the All-Dayer were gvien a free 12" of "Do You Wanna Get Funky With Me" - Peter Brown. The ad says on 12" Disco Disc! Have got to know Chis since ,and he is a great lover of Black Music, and was very close to Dave Godiin from the 60's onwards. Ian, The biggest mooning scenario was at one of the massive Bank Holiday All-Dayers we did at Blackpool Mecca. Ian and Paul said it was a matter of honour that we had more people mooning than they would have at the Purley All-Dayer taking place at same time. Good as gold maybe a 1,000 plus people showed their asses - and the Mecca manager, who was new, went absolutely mad at me and threatened to stop the All-Dayer there and then. I had to say if he wanted a riot he should go ahead and do so, and luckily he saw sense and backed off. Moodiest artist we ever had at those Mecca All-Dayers was Chris Hills (not Chris Hill the DJ) of Players Association. He was a nightmare, and nothing we did was good enough for him. With 3,000 plus people in it must have been one of the best audiences he ever played to, but he moaned about everything. Others - like Sylvester, Al Hudson, Brass Construction,Crown Heights Affair - were great to deal with. Worse artist was Eddie Kendricks - he cancelled his UK tour and left us in the lurch. Rob Thomas had an acetate of another version of this with same backing track but different song on top, which he thought came from a Gene Redd connection (nothing to do with The Inspirations) but put it down and could not find it after playing it down the phone to me me one night. It was really good! There must be quite a few W/DJs of Roy Handy compared to original stock copy ,back in 1988 I pulled 50 copies of the demo out of Bob May's in Detroit.. Neil
