Lads, great show and music policy the tops...........but why oh why, does Alan Chapman keep going on and on and on about South "crapy" London and Chelscum FC ? South London has long since had it's day, the Old Kent RD in the early eighties was the "dogs" now it's a sh1t hole, as is the rest of S. London. It's either Yuppies OR sh1t hole in that area. As for CFC, I bet you were a season ticket holder before Roman eh Alan ? So, come on lads, lets keep it a bit more focused on the music or anything else, so long as it's nothing to do with South London and Chelscum RANT over Lets see if you can do a show without mentioning either Alan

what the f**ks going on with Ebay these days ? Everytime I see a half decent record, all the bidders are like this (example L***H private bidder, will what the feck am I????) I'm assuming they are profesional bidders/buyers. So, shafting any chance of the lesser know soulies from picking up a bargin. So, my karma for this situation now is simple, if I can't get a bargin, then nether can this lot. They want the record, then I'm gonna try to make them pay nearer the asking price. With this in mind............Lew Kirton 45 mint, on Alston on ebay at the moment standing at $25. Also Italian press of Al Foster Band currently at $66 and Wil Collins - Anything I can do, also a mint Italian press currently at $50 Now I feel better............
-
Blimey, that makes the one on Ebay a good buy then, it's only about $75 at the moment
-
Anyone got any ideas what the price of this is at the moment ?

I would just like to say to all the people at Starpoint that come up with the idea of doing a live broadcast - gits!! Do you reliease how much work I had to do around the house last weekend !!! Being an expat in Queensland, the broadcasts came on during the Saturday/ Sunday morning and afternoons. Soooo, all I could do was get a beer, sit in the garden and crank up the sound and enjoy Not much makes me homesick these days, but the tunes and the sound of the punters 'aving a good time was great to hear. Just like to say to all the DJ's I heard, there was some great spots, and Ivor, the spot I heard you play mate was cracking. Just what I like to hear, a mix or funk, soul and soulful house all in one spot - hats off mate. Again, thanks to all for making last weekend a very soulful one. All I have to do now, is catch up on the jobs I had to do last weekend

well, at least it's an intelligent reply this time....... I'm glad you like to go to house do's and then rare soul do's etc. Me, well the do's I remember going to in and around London played funk, Northern, Rare Groove, jazz funk and hip hop ( house was not on the scene then ). Now, I've been to plenty of just jazz funk do's and the same with 60's Northern and great nights there were. But have you seen the age of the punters at some of the Northen do's now, another ten years and we will start to need Zimmerframe parking, not car or scooter. I think its now time for the scene to progress, and I believe there are a lot of youngsters out there that are into the more soulful house and dance that would enjoy some of the more modern tunes and who knows, might even like some of the rare stuff from the 60's. I believe that the only way they will get to hear this though is with a mixed bag of sounds. What I find amazing is that at a 60's do, punters don't nessasary like every track, some they hate, but they don't walk out the nighter, but if it was a modern track....moan,moan,moan ! Whats the difference, you don't like a track, then fair enough, but give the DJ some credit for trying to push some boundaries.....

Cheers Cunnie, lets keep our fingers crossed that the scene can start to move forward a bit

Ivor your not shouting are you ? Mate, I know what your into and I have great respect for that. We have crossed paths many times, from college and Simon Dunmore dos, all the way through the 100 club and beyond, so I have great admiration of your soul music styles, but you did make that comment. Which at the time did quite shock me, because it was not what I was expecting you to say. That said, you was a bit "worst for ware" . I would not know now whether you are playing any soulful house mate as I'm in Aus now, but if you are, good on you. You are right, not all Soulful House is good, very far from it, but when you do get a good track, Julie McKnight - Dimond life, Kenny Bobien - right away etc, I think they could be played in a modern room, right next to the best of the 80's90's and 21st Centry soul........oh and jazz funk. Ivor you remember what DDC's used top be like, now that was the late 80's and we were playing (at the start anyway) jazz funk, philly, Rare Groove, funk and northern and Simon's nights even have some hip hop on to of that list. What I see now is the Soul scene that's gone backwards. Funny thing is though, listen to Solar or Starpoint, and I hear quite a few shows that play a mix of styles, so why can't it be replicated on the DJ set ?

No, i never missed the quote, but what I don't understand is how you believe you would be able to give a "good" representation that will hold credence with us soulies that like a whole spectrum of the music, when you say yourself "you only spend the odd hour in the modern room". I wonder how you would react to some of your friends going with you to a Northern "do", and coating it off after an hour or so ? Would you try to argue with them that they need to give it more time to listen to the tracks ? You know, i've been to Northern "do's" with live artists on, (E. Starr comes to mind) and happy seen him at a few allnighters, (Hinkley being one), you never saw a 60's soul fans coating him off for playing Happy Radio or Contact in his set, no they would be on the floor giving it large, because Edwin was the MAN. Ah, but put those tracks on at a plain old Northern do and listen to the crap comments about disco this and disco that, etc. Anyway I degress.....you need to spend more than the odd hour in a modern room to be able to say that it does nothing for you. Until then I'm affraid, your opion is not a very well respected one ...well, by me anyway !

Hi peps, i'm not new to this forum, but don't normally get involved. This an interesting thread, I\ve been into Northern for years, but the London side of me came through the jazz\funk and disco ranks first. Now we have the 21st century version of disco - soulful house, and I think there is some great stuff out there as weell as some crap. Just like disco and Northern scenes. Anyway, in reply to the above. I have no issue with you just being into 60's and admire your honesty, but if you don't spend time in the modern room, how the hell you ever going to find out whether any of the tunes mean anything ? Ivor, I was interested in what you said that there was some soulful house that you thought was ok. I remember asking you what you thought of it in London at a "do" near Marble Arch about 5 years ago and you said it was all shit !! I'm glad that you have changed your mind abit One last thing, the day we start getting funk, jazz funk, Northern and modern (80's soul modern ?) and soulful house in the same room, then that's when the UK scene has come of age - i'll keep wishing ah !!

i HEARD A TRACK ON STARPOINT A FEW MINUTES AGO, i DON'Y KNOW HOW NEW IT IS, BUT THE TRACK WAS CALLED CHANGES. THE ARTIST SOUNDED LIKE JEAN KING, BUT I KNOW THE PRESENTER DEFINATLY SAID FEATURING SASHA ANYONE KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THIS TRACK OF HAVE A SOUNDFLE ? CHEERS...
-
First question - does anyone know why Starpoint is not broadcasting on the WWW at the moment ? Second question - why does Solar keep putting on early morning shows that are repeated and seem to be just "strung" together. Gets right up my goat Merry soulful Xmas everybody....
-
quick question.... I started out on the Northern scene at the end of the 70's having been into jazz funk. Still being into both, and the modern stuff aswell, I was just wondering about the defination of the northern ( rare) scene now ! Let me explain.....back in the day, the Northern scene was (mostly) about rare soul, I know there were exceptions and still is. My question is, what do we now class and define as....RARE ? When I listen to SOLAR or Starpoint, I hear as much Northern as I do Jazz funk, new soul, modern etc. As for normal radio, nether is played, well apeart from the odd specalist show. Sooooo, how does Northern still stand up to being the ....RARE soul scene ? Because as far as radio air play goes, you could argue that say, DISCO, is a more rare format played on the more popular soul radio stations on the net than Northern these days. So, should we be looking at the types of soul music ( or even some funk?) that is now included in a DJ set at a Northern do, or do we keep to the same path for the next 30 years, hoping that more youngsters get involved with the scene ? Personally, I would like to see a broader scope of the music, but with DJ's mixing it up, not one set 60's, then another doing a more modern set (80's modern ? thats another discusion !!). I know there are some places doing this, but until the scene "bats from the same base" we could be missing the chance to bring in a lot more youngsters into it. Now being in my 40's I would love to know that the scene I (we) love, carries on way beyond my life span......

Cheers. Was it a 12 or LP track, if so, any idea what the title of the LP was? Thanks in advance....
-
does anyone known the following track - if you gonna love me (82) ? Great track, but I don't believe she had an LP out that year, so I'm assuming that it was done as a guest vocalist with another group ?
-
Anyone any info on this ? I believe it came out about two years ago. Looking for a copy if anyone has one kicking around.
-
Lads, quick question regarding all the new reissued Funk and rare groove LP stuff on the market over the last few years. I was looking at a couple in a shop the other day, The Ripple LP, I think on GRP and Tommy Stuart with the Hump and Bustle music track on. There seems to be no indication, apart from being clean covers and spotless vinyl that these albums are not original. I remember in the early 80's when reissued LP's came out, there would at least be a barcode on them, not these ones! I was wondering whether anyone out there has any ideas how to tell the difference between the newer pressings and the originals? I could imagine some poor buggers have come a croper on Ebay regarding these newer copies, because there is no immediate indication that they are not originals, they even have the year of the original on there labels!!!
