  1. https://youtu.be/CtI9ORHVwLA A truly great and under valued soulstress, she left us some incredible music.
  2. You need to get out more...... Same old argument.... all the good stuff has already been found.....and usually from those that don't bother to step out of their front door.
  3. It may not be the best record vocally, but to condemn it by referring to scraping barrels is insane IMO. It's a great tune, and the price tag relates to the rarity, and not the content........... as you should know by now.
  4. The irony of certain parts of the soul scene is that when great new soul is available there's little to no interest. It seems that interest only generates when they've disappeared and the increased price tag and scarcity make them appealing. It seems that most have forgotten or never knew that the 'Northern' scene was significantly fuelled by new releases back in the day. Lee Fields, Martha High & Speedometer, Mary Gresham, Bill Spoon, George Soule, Sky Hi and many others have all featured as new release plays at Lifeline, they're just as relevant to me.
  5. Linda Jones - Marmite!!!!! Her vocal style is cheesey!!! You're either desperate for a thread theme, or you really know some people that don't know the first thing about real soul music. I've yet to meet anyone who thinks Linda Jones is anything less than a legend,
  6. Craig Moerer was one of the first dealers to offer "For Real", in the mid to late 80's, during the time when his lists were airmailed letter/envelopes. I can't remeber the exact price at the time, but something between $30 and $60. I took around 10 copies from him at the time and sold them on, mostly to freinds. Because it seemed to be an 'available' 45 at the time, I never considered it to be rare or valuable, and bought it because it's such a great record. Later to be amazed at the price it has since fetched. Despite hearing it out almost every weekend in more recent years, since it became s modern soul standard, I still love it, the production quality is as close to perfection as I've ever heard. Yeah, it's played to death, and it should be rested, but you can't deny the quality of the tune. I bought "We Can Make It Happen" blind from Rod for a pittance when they first turned up, and thought it was average to good, just because it's hard not to compare it to "For Real". I'm sure I'd rate it higher otherwise. It's too easy to dismiss real quality as yesterday's music for the sake of something shiny and new......and quite often it's the wrong thing to do.
  7. That'll be Royal Robins - Something About You That Send Me..... also quite brilliant
  8. I have to say, I don't see anything wrong with Mistura either, it's a great piece of jazz, and fitted right in at the time
  9. Bang on Kev, "Baby I'm Still The Same Man" still does it for me, great, great tune, and I still have a soft spot for "My Days Are Numbered" by James Wells too.
  10. Noman Connors could certainly spot talent, and her involvement with Gamble & Huff, Mtume & Lucas, and Skip Scarborough left us with a legendary legacy of great music
  11. Do you have any idea what you're talking about ? 'Tailor made' was a term applied to records that were purposely made for the 'Northern' dance floors during the mid-70's, most of which were trite pop tunes that had the required beat, though others were great soul records that 30 years later have stood the test of time. The David Washington track is a great, contemporary tune that will have a much wider appeal than the very narrow retro-scene that you seem to refer to. Quality music always stands the test of time.
  12. Now that Richie Havens has made it to the big time, I wonder if Spyder Turner's version will catch on
  13. Just pointing out the difference between a handbag house and proper, soulful house. You can go back to 1973 now Pete.
  14. Oh, hello Pete, has the 21st century woken you up. Sorry about that.
  15. Speaking as one of the 2,000 at Southport......I'm so disappointed in you
  16. https://youtu.be/5U_EGCgHlAQ Benchmark soulful house
  17. Proabably, just about the best release from the label to date.....if this isn't huge then there's no justice.... David Washington's voice is still in top Chapter 8 form Move aside Bob Sinclair....'cos this is REAL.
  18. Fine, you like it, you think it was inspired tune to play. I don't. It's a million miles away from the spirit of the scene and what most of us signed up for. Each to their own.
  19. I sometimes wonder what some folk use as their bechmark to gauge the quality (or not) of other tunes. DJs that play this kind of trash either have no point of reference to assess quality or care more about the ego boost from a full dance floor than the spirit of what should be played. It's a complete cop out to say that because other equally bad and worse records have been played under the banner of soul music, then it's fair game to continue to play more bad records. Hardly what could be called progressive is it ? You would like to hope that some would have gained an greater appreciation of playlist rights and wrongs over time....but clearly not.. It's a pretty poor testament to what lessons should have been learned over the past... IMHO of course. No doubt this will be acclaimed as a floor filler for many Blackpool Tower events to come.... $$$$$$$
  20. Same Billy Woods as the guy on Verve ? Other Sussex 45s have turned out be harder to find than expected.... Sharon Ridley for example....
  21. Betty Everett's 'Getting Mighty Crowded' still does it for me, it's like hearing it for the first time, everytime......atmospheric production, great, meaningful lyrics, vocals with more emotion than should be allowed, and a finger clicking tempo.... perfection on a 45
  22. Hey, I practically lived at Scoey's when I was kid....and you're right 'Move On Up' was never off the juke box, everytime I hear it, it takes me back to that place and time .....and I've gotta say the extended LP version is a masterclass in soulful percussion....
  23. C.A.T LP £284......staggering!
  24. So on the basis that playing dire records like this are to be applauded because they fill a floor, can the last one hanging on to the soul scene switch the light off when leaving.....
