I kind of know what you're saying abount black wannabe Dean Martin tunes, and there's been more than few of those played when people should have known better. It's a bit too simple a definition to say that beat ballads are all in that bag; how would you define a tune like Johnny Burton - Slave Girl, too slow to describe as mid-tempo, but it's a million miles away from a Dean Martin sound alike.
-
Nice version Blake, though I prefer Vickie Anderson's version
-
Don't recall, it could have been Alan or Richard, though very unlikely to have been Winstanley.
-
Orignally a Mecca play though definitely played at Wigan...big at St Ives at the time too
-
With you on that Jock, plenty of the tunes listed are worth plays, and there's a few that I regularly drop into sets. Don't hear too many down beat tunes played out nowadays which is a great shame 'cos plenty are far more soulful than some of the uptempo plays. It seems that Northern has become a term for uptempo 60's, and ok whilst the majority of Northern tunes are, Northern has always been far more of a broader church. I'm also with Chalky, I'd describe quite a few of the tunes listed on the thread as mid-tempo........though to a lot of people Northern mid-tempo is now crossover . As far as beat ballads go, here's some that do it for me...... Charades - Never Set Me Free - MGM Vonda Marie - I Feel Complete - Phil LA of Soul Tommy Collins - I Want To Thank You - Verve Reginald Day - Lost Love - Midas It Use To Be - Jimmy Burns & Fantastic Epics - Tip Top

"Do What You Feel" - massive everywhere as a new release and was as big a "Northern" anthem as Sitting In My Class, and which for me captures a time when the scene's main rooms were awesome mixing pots of all styles and diversity was cool. Yeah of course it's funky, so what.............loved it then, and still love it today..........AWESOME

Wrongcrowd replied to ajb's topic in Look At Your Box
Thanks for the CD's received so far............some great tunes added to the ever growing wants list I've been having a few technical problems.....no honest I have..... Kept getting errors through iTunes, and getting only one CD completed for every five attempted. I've reverted to Nero now, and so far so good, so aim to have all CDs sent out next week -
With you on that Eddie..............corker of a tune...

Can Somebody Please Find Box Of This Tune
Wrongcrowd replied to Birder66's topic in Look At Your Box
It's a pop record and this is a soul site -
I'll use it sparingly ...........you can have too much of a good thing......
-
66 years old, better hold on to the CD and do him a tape from your dansette
-
Paul....you're mate sounds more blinkered than some on here .........anything by the Sapphires on ABC, most things on Ric-Tic and let him work that one out......
-
Using the mic when DJing is part of this scene's culture, and IMO when used well a DJ can add to the atmosphere of the room, and I think it really helps when playing something fresh (or fresh to most) to encourage and inform. Although there's been times when the DJ just rambles on, and inside I'm screaming ffs just put the needle on the record ..... and then there's the DJs that say no more than "this is", and "that was", fine occasionally but not on every record.........it's just dull. On the whole I'm definitely on the side of use the mic if you're DJing........it's what DJs do.

Wrongcrowd replied to a topic in All About the SOUL
Not a great ratio, but plenty on here have a broad appreciation of all things soulful, though you'll find them mostly on the media threads listening rather than bitching Take me to the mothership............or Lifeline, Boomerang, The Attic, Dab of Soul, Soul Essence and other like minded planets of enlightenment....... -

I heard the new Stevie Wonder the other day on 2....middle of the road music, so far removed from soul Never been a fan of Stevie..........not much of a soul output in the past 30 odd years... ...though I was taken by Sensuous Whisper from his Conversation Peace album in '95...quite a choon...
-
