Hi Eddie, yeah Brand New Start is absolutely awesome....just taken a quick listen to the flip...amd I'm not getting anything from it...maybe it's a grower ??
  2. Wrongcrowd posted a post in a topic in Look At Your Box
Would you care to expand on that ? I don't see anything negative on this subject other than your post....
  3. Never seen one, but now we know about them, just see how many VG++ menus appear on eBay......
  4. More than I can afford. ....it's only money....
  5. Wasn't it Martha Reeves on the New Year show a couple of years back.....?? Sadly she'd completely lost it...could hardly find let alone hold a note.... I'm just about to check iPlayer, 'cos I missed the show last night....a little taster befopre we see her live in Nottingham in a few days....can't wait, IMO she has given more, and more consistently than any other female artist....sorry Aretha
  6. I guess the most well known and popular protest tune for the late 70's is The Philadelphia All-Stars - Let's Clean Up The Ghetto...though the album itself is a great slab of social commentary soul, with some great tracks......... Intruders - Save The Children Teddy Pendegrass - Now Is The Time To Do It Other social commentary / protest tunes from the 70's.... Walter Heath - You Know You're Wrong Don't You Brother - Buddah Johns Brothers - Try To Walk A Mile - RCA Shirley Wahls - Remember Martin Luther King - Blue Candle Moody Scott - We Gotta Save It - Seventy 7 Moddy Scott - (We Gotta) Bust Out Of The Ghetto - Sound Stage 7 Donny Hathaway - The Ghetto - Atco Betty Jean Plummer - How Can We Save It - Bell Eddie Kendrick - My People...Hold On Syl Johnson - Concrete Reservation - Twinight Marvin Gaye - Inner City Blues - Tamla Marvin Gayes - What's Going On - Tamla Timmy Thomas - Why Can't We Live Together - Glades Chi-Lites (For God's Sake) Give More Power To The People -Brunswick Lost Generation - This Is The Lost Generation - Brunswick Impressions - Choice Of Colors - Curtom James Brown didn't hold back on social commentary, and a few of his 70's albums hold some great tracks.. King Heroin - Polydor People Wake Up And Live - Polydor So many great social commentry tracks form Curtis Mayfield too... Ghetto Child - Curtom Miss Black America - Curtom The Other Side Of Town - Curtom We The People Who Are Darker Than Blue - Curtom Mighty, Mighty - Curtom Just about every Gil Scott Heron track....
  7. Theyr'e all good, but I don't know any of them...I agree with Gilly track 5 is very good, closely followed by track 3. Wouldn't mind listening to set played by whoever put this tape together....who did you get it from ?
  8. Hi Ion, there's plenty, and probably the only upside to the Vietnam war was a prolific output of black American protest themed music...here's few obvious ones that spring to mind............. Edwin Starr - War....................of course Emanuel Laskey - Letter From Vietnam Zerben Hicks & Dynamics - Lights Out Larry Sanders Where Did Peace Go Free Angela Davis LP on Sound of Soul I'll have dig through and let you have some more....
  9. It's a bit good ain't it.....about 100 quid should get you one...

Title sounds a bit dodgy, but I'll flip over Brand New Start and give you an opinion tomorrow...
  11. ok....it's a fair cop.... Maybe I should have expanded on my earlier post to say that the Northern scene has always borrowed jazz tunes ....Ramsey Lewis, Jobell, Sergio Mendes, George Benson, Steve Karmen, Frank Foster, Salsoul Orchestra, Silvetti....and delved into funk, Al Foster, East Coast Connection, Crow, Gentlemen & Their Ladies, Skull Snaps, Frankie Crocker, Miami, .....loaned from disco....Stratavarious, Rimshots, Tavares, GQ....and used more 70's and 80's Philly Soul than you can shake a stick at.....there's also been masses of modern soul and plenty of good soulful house tunes that have crossed over (usually 3-5 years after release, but hey...)...there's also been more latin influenced soul played over the past 15 years or more too... Admittedly I should have specifically ruled out Reggae.....though there's a few of those that sping to mind, anyway...take out hip hop, and whatever Chorley thinks warehouse music is...and I'd say that it's a pretty broad church of black music...might not be to everyone's taste, but there's no denying it's (been) there....
  12. "This is a Northern Soul club where you will hear mid-uptempo 60s and 70s (in the main) American Soul records and not Jazz, Funk, latin, Reggae and a hbrid of every Black dance music concieved since the year dot. This in the so-called name of 'progression'." FFS will you give it a rest......nobody is suggesting the progression encompasses every strand of American black music......that wouldn't be a good thing now would it....maybe that's something we can agree on.....lordy, lordy... Progression is about playing fresh music that sits within the accepted boundaries, (please nobody start to define boundaries, it's nearly the weekend !!) as opposed to sitting on your laurels, happy with the status quo (and no, I'm not having a pop at you on your diverse musical taste...I couldn't live through that again), and happy with a revivalist music scene... Right I'm off back to the media threads.....care to join me ??
  13. 4-4-2, but bagsy I pick first.....Jocko, Hootenannie you're up front.... ...oops, no pun intended...
  14. No "malfunction" here James....just wanted to correct your assumption and disrepectful remarks....again... ...and FYI my "Euroland" excursions are not limited to Barcelona and Rimini.....and quite frankly I'm not interested in comparing geographies or experiences with you, life's too short.... Meanwhile back to the thread...........have we gone full circle.............I really, really hope so.
  15. I've only ever seen one copy....Paul Dunn's (great Detroit collection)...he leant me it to play at Cleethorpes modern room during an afternoon session...there was a gathering around the decks and quite a few open mouths....absolutely stunning soul.......
  16. No, not the Bolier James....Movin' On....and can you stop referring to the majority of the audience as clubbers looking for a good time. Looking for a good time they certainly were , clubbers, definitely not .....Edu's crowd is a the hardcore of Barcelona's if not Spain's soul crowd. They know what they want to hear as Edu has already made clear. To dismiss the crowd on such a disrespectful level is just contemptible and I would have hoped (that by now), this kind of dismissive and snide remark would be beneath you. See you at Brixton Cliff
  17. Hi Mate, thanks but I have the Charly LP, it's an Excello copy I'm after now.
  18. Great, it's a date then....look forward to seeing you there .....Jock and I will be the really serious looking ones sitting in the dark corner plotting in hushed tones the next stage of revolution and education of the masses... ...otherwise we may be on the dance floor to some fresher music, and having a bit of a laugh.... I know which version you'd prefer it to be.... Peace & Love p.s where were you between '78 and 95..... ....we could have sorted this little tiff out much sooner...
  19. I've no idea where you're coming from with "a mission to educate".........the agenda here Chorleysoul, I believe is whether a more positive and honest look at ourselves and our view / involvement is to be happy with what we've had, and carry on playing the same old, tired tunes or stick with the original ethos and continue to find/re-discover fresher music..60's, 70's...2009. You've made your position (kind of) clear, though it did take some reading and filtering to get your gist, and if you're happy with a revivalist scene, good luck to you. Others of us that haven't grown tired of fresh music have a different opinon, so we'll keep moving on if that's ok with you. "Seen and heard it all before"..........exactly my point, but it did take you some time to grasp the thread. I look forward to meeting you at some point....we might even agree on something, but in the meantime I'm signing off, and heading for the media threads where fresh music is a way of life......ta ta...
  20. You see.......that's what I'm talking about.....though it was big on the modern scene....or do I mean warehouse scene ?? a few years back....killer soul tune...
  21. Here you go Rod................... Not what I would call a significantly progressive set...but I would hope it's a departure from the same old tried and fully tested floor fillers.....Salvadors springs to mind for some reason.... .....and you're right I will vary a playlist according to the venue and crowd Just for the record.....latin.....not really my thing.....but I'm sure it's wonderful music (just to head off any further tangents)....and warehouse music....?? I'm not even sure what that is Cliff
  22. So the bunch of wiggling kids couldn't possibly have passion for the music and understanding for a "scene" then James...you need to get yourself out to some of the European events to experience the appreciation and love they have for the music, before you generalise in such a demeaning and ignorant way. I'm sure you'd find some of these wiggling kids are far more knowledgable and less wet behind the ears than others that spring to mind.........
  23. Simple question deserves a simple answer..........because I enjoy it, but as you know I don't limit DJing to strictly Northern rooms. Lifeline is similarly the only place that I've caught you out and about.......you might want to try The Attic, United Sound of Soul, Boomerang, Soul Essence, Groovesville, Dab Of Soul, Hip City, Souln' Around, Select Soul.......but maybe you're right.....I should get out more.... ...well, one of us should anyhow...
  24. "But there was still a definiton of sound, a style factor which dictated the musical boundaries of the scene and to many people, that style aspect concludes around 76-77 with great records like FLAMING KING etc. That style aspect seems, over the years to have frustated many people and we had first 'The Modern Soul Scene' (Of which I loved a large number of records) and now a further kailedescope of tastes and styles, which for some reason, certain people seem intent on foisting onto the classic Northern Soul fan, with or without his or her's approval!" That is complete and utter bollocks!!! Are you really denying the relevance of every 70's and 80's soul play within Northern clubs main rooms since '77 ? You really have got a distorted view of what the Northern scene has been about......this might fit your comfort zone, but it's so far away from the truth it's laughable. I'd completely understand your lack of attendance at Northern venues since '77, since you had so many other music styles......punk, jazz-funk...to fit in before you rejoined our happy band...so that might explain your seeming lack of experience of the music played. I'd really like you to explain to me how tracks like the Anderson Brothers, Frankie Crocker, Nate Evans, Eloise Laws............are acceptable "Northern" tracks , just because they happened to be played at THE time, when similar styled tracks that came along later (post Wigan) are shuffled off to an alternative room, like some embarrassing relative turning up unexpectedly. I don't recall any surveys being conducted before the Jobell Orchestra (for instance) was "foistered" on an unsuspecting "classic Northern soul fan" of the day. So please don't try to pretend that the "Northern" scene of the day was anything other than a great mix of different and complimentary soul styles. The "classic Northern soul fan" as you put it has more recently redefined Northern as uptempo 60's, white washing the past and small incedentals like Dave Godin raving over great Northern tracks like Wash And Wear Love, hardly a typical "Northern" sound, but a Northern classic, nevertheless.......I'm sure he'd have something to say about the diversity of styles if he was still around. By the way it's Flame 'N' King....
