  1. How do you go about reporting Mark ? I'd like to throw my two penneth in too.....
  2. Yeah....I know it's dreadful....though somebody's paid 80 quid for it.... ...just wanted to know if anybody else thought it might be Johnny Gilliam..
  3. Good luck with these prices !! How can you claim Peabo Bryson - Smile as "another one of your discoveries"......
  4. Sounds very, very like Johnny Gilliam to me..... https://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250504341761&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT
  5. I don't think anyone on here is making allegations, just asking a question. If the costs of the all-dayer were genuinely 3,355 then fair enough, but you've got to agree your costs were extremely high for a single all-day event. Could you not have asked DJs to provide services for free given the charitiable cause ?
  6. I think Tes has made a fair point, and asked a fair question. If an event has been advertised as all profits going to charity which is highly commendable gesture, then it's reasonable to expect that to be the case. I've checked on the events lookback thread, and unless I've misunderstood, a total of 567 pounds was made from the raffle and CD sales, and that's the amount now held pending a decision on the charity. I couldn't find any mention of other profits made from the 600 attendees who each paid 6 pounds entry.
  7. Thanks...........sorted....Excello copy on the way...... Sorry Johnny, only found the one copy....
  8. Here's another great NY disco tune that gained massive acceptance as a new release play in the main rooms of the day..... New York Port Authority - I Got It Pt I & II - Invicta -
  9. Thanks for putting me right on the two releases....I've had a proper listen, and you're all right, it is is a different vocalist, but as Sean says, there's hardly anything between them. Too many years of loud music has obviously taken its toll on my poor old ears.. BTW.....My Private Stock copy is credited to DeDe Warwick, and not Dee Dee Warwick, though it has relese number 45,011, so it seems that there are at least 3 different Private Stock labels..... .....ok, I'll put my anorak away now...
  10. Does anyone have any background info on the reasons that Dee Dee Warwick's "Funny How We Changed Places" on Private Stock was issued earlier on Musicor credited to Debra Anderson ? The tracks are exactly the same, and the flips side tracks are too, though the flip titles are different ?? Contractual maybe......
  11. Hi Eddie, yeah Brand New Start is absolutely awesome....just taken a quick listen to the flip...amd I'm not getting anything from it...maybe it's a grower ??
  12. Would you care to expand on that ? I don't see anything negative on this subject other than your post....
  13. Never seen one, but now we know about them, just see how many VG++ menus appear on eBay......
  14. More than I can afford. ....it's only money....
  15. Wasn't it Martha Reeves on the New Year show a couple of years back.....?? Sadly she'd completely lost it...could hardly find let alone hold a note.... I'm just about to check iPlayer, 'cos I missed the show last night....a little taster befopre we see her live in Nottingham in a few days....can't wait, IMO she has given more, and more consistently than any other female artist....sorry Aretha
  16. I guess the most well known and popular protest tune for the late 70's is The Philadelphia All-Stars - Let's Clean Up The Ghetto...though the album itself is a great slab of social commentary soul, with some great tracks......... Intruders - Save The Children Teddy Pendegrass - Now Is The Time To Do It Other social commentary / protest tunes from the 70's.... Walter Heath - You Know You're Wrong Don't You Brother - Buddah Johns Brothers - Try To Walk A Mile - RCA Shirley Wahls - Remember Martin Luther King - Blue Candle Moody Scott - We Gotta Save It - Seventy 7 Moddy Scott - (We Gotta) Bust Out Of The Ghetto - Sound Stage 7 Donny Hathaway - The Ghetto - Atco Betty Jean Plummer - How Can We Save It - Bell Eddie Kendrick - My People...Hold On Syl Johnson - Concrete Reservation - Twinight Marvin Gaye - Inner City Blues - Tamla Marvin Gayes - What's Going On - Tamla Timmy Thomas - Why Can't We Live Together - Glades Chi-Lites (For God's Sake) Give More Power To The People -Brunswick Lost Generation - This Is The Lost Generation - Brunswick Impressions - Choice Of Colors - Curtom James Brown didn't hold back on social commentary, and a few of his 70's albums hold some great tracks.. King Heroin - Polydor People Wake Up And Live - Polydor So many great social commentry tracks form Curtis Mayfield too... Ghetto Child - Curtom Miss Black America - Curtom The Other Side Of Town - Curtom We The People Who Are Darker Than Blue - Curtom Mighty, Mighty - Curtom Just about every Gil Scott Heron track....
  17. Theyr'e all good, but I don't know any of them...I agree with Gilly track 5 is very good, closely followed by track 3. Wouldn't mind listening to set played by whoever put this tape together....who did you get it from ?
  18. Hi Ion, there's plenty, and probably the only upside to the Vietnam war was a prolific output of black American protest themed music...here's few obvious ones that spring to mind............. Edwin Starr - War....................of course Emanuel Laskey - Letter From Vietnam Zerben Hicks & Dynamics - Lights Out Larry Sanders Where Did Peace Go Free Angela Davis LP on Sound of Soul I'll have dig through and let you have some more....
  19. It's a bit good ain't it.....about 100 quid should get you one...
  20. Title sounds a bit dodgy, but I'll flip over Brand New Start and give you an opinion tomorrow...
  21. ok....it's a fair cop.... Maybe I should have expanded on my earlier post to say that the Northern scene has always borrowed jazz tunes ....Ramsey Lewis, Jobell, Sergio Mendes, George Benson, Steve Karmen, Frank Foster, Salsoul Orchestra, Silvetti....and delved into funk, Al Foster, East Coast Connection, Crow, Gentlemen & Their Ladies, Skull Snaps, Frankie Crocker, Miami, .....loaned from disco....Stratavarious, Rimshots, Tavares, GQ....and used more 70's and 80's Philly Soul than you can shake a stick at.....there's also been masses of modern soul and plenty of good soulful house tunes that have crossed over (usually 3-5 years after release, but hey...)...there's also been more latin influenced soul played over the past 15 years or more too... Admittedly I should have specifically ruled out Reggae.....though there's a few of those that sping to mind, anyway...take out hip hop, and whatever Chorley thinks warehouse music is...and I'd say that it's a pretty broad church of black music...might not be to everyone's taste, but there's no denying it's (been) there....
  22. "This is a Northern Soul club where you will hear mid-uptempo 60s and 70s (in the main) American Soul records and not Jazz, Funk, latin, Reggae and a hbrid of every Black dance music concieved since the year dot. This in the so-called name of 'progression'." FFS will you give it a rest......nobody is suggesting the progression encompasses every strand of American black music......that wouldn't be a good thing now would it....maybe that's something we can agree on.....lordy, lordy... Progression is about playing fresh music that sits within the accepted boundaries, (please nobody start to define boundaries, it's nearly the weekend !!) as opposed to sitting on your laurels, happy with the status quo (and no, I'm not having a pop at you on your diverse musical taste...I couldn't live through that again), and happy with a revivalist music scene... Right I'm off back to the media threads.....care to join me ??
  23. 4-4-2, but bagsy I pick first.....Jocko, Hootenannie you're up front.... ...oops, no pun intended...
  24. No "malfunction" here James....just wanted to correct your assumption and disrepectful remarks....again... ...and FYI my "Euroland" excursions are not limited to Barcelona and Rimini.....and quite frankly I'm not interested in comparing geographies or experiences with you, life's too short.... Meanwhile back to the thread...........have we gone full circle.............I really, really hope so.
  25. I've only ever seen one copy....Paul Dunn's (great Detroit collection)...he leant me it to play at Cleethorpes modern room during an afternoon session...there was a gathering around the decks and quite a few open mouths....absolutely stunning soul.......
