The Top 10 Faq's Regarding Northern Soul
Wrongcrowd replied to Steve Plumb's topic in All About the SOUL
Thanks Steve.....that's been really helpful... Anyone know where I can get hold of Vanessa Haynes Sings Northern ? -
It was bound to happen..... Donny gets my vote..... There's a very, very nice version by Fred Ross on the Dignity album from 2000 that's certainly worth checking out too... oops... that'll teach me to join the end of the thread without checking earlier posts...
-
Nice enough version, but lacks the energy and rawness of the Magnificents...it's been Motowned.
-
I'm not sure which is worse....the fact that someone thinks that Joe 90 is worth talking about, or that I got suckered into the thread...... ... ....but only in the defence of The French Fries....which should never be put into the same bag as Ron Grainger and the other DJ embarassments on this thread.....

Interesting find John, and from the artist listing it certainly seems to be a compilation of GSF tunes, which would make it the first issue of the Anderson Brothers.... Don't know much about Gal Ron Records (who does...? ), but according to Bill Board they licensed from a good few labels in the US and Europe during 60's and 70's, so there's a good chance that your find is pukka..
-
Why would you want to rename defined styles and accepted meanings ? "Modern Soul" is the term given to the genre/style, in the same way that the term "Northern Soul" is............ "Oldies" is a term applied to tunes that have been long played on any part of the scene, and bears no relation to the recording date...... ... a recently discovered 60's tune is not an oldie.... ..."Northern" has no geographical meaning, and like wise "Modern" and Oldie have no chronological meaning..... ...but I think you already knew that.
-
Being useless on UK and European releases I can't help you.... but..Ascots - Miss Heartbreaker on Mir-A-Don....absolutely, though I've not seen yellow, only purple.

The Internet, Social Networking Sites And The Northern Soul Scene
Wrongcrowd replied to a topic in All About the SOUL
As with most of the threads you instigate, I regularly find myself trying to understand what you're trying to achieve. Most seem to be scripted to provoke polar views and just antagonise, rather than promote debate and thoughtful and positive discussion. This latest thread seems to be no different. To infer that social networking might be detrimental to the club scene, and even a contributory cause to reducing numbers attending club nights (which is not a trend I recognise, but anyway) is just another cynical attempt to provoke. I would think it far more likely that social networking, and this site specifically has promoted greater interest in the club scene, and in particular the greater exposure of fresher music to encourage venue attendance. Sure there'll be plenty that'll be happy to get their fix from Soul Source and other sites, without feeling the need to attend club nights, but I don't see anything wrong with that. They will almost certainly contribute new music for others more inclined to get their soul fix at venues, and still indirectly promote and be involved in the scene. To sum up, it's not case of either/or, they're complimentary. -
Legend is a term applied too genorously to many, but in Teddy's case it doesn't go far enough to match his prolific and quality output....words wouldn't do him justice, and his voice says far more than we can.......... HAROLD MELVIN & THE BLUENOTES - PRETTY FLOWER - PHILADELPHIA INTL LP - Sublime soul music....RIP Teddy...we'll miss you..
-
So many to thank for adding to my wants list over the years....... John Anderson - for all of the reasons previously mentioned, and top quality front page reccommendations Colin Dilnot - a real soul music lover who put me on to so many great tunes via plenty of tapes exchanged during late 70's / early 80's Chris Plant - a shining light of quality 60's tunes during the early 80's Dave Thorley - for playing no holds barred, top quality soul from all eras Arthur Fenn - for everything he's played - without compromise Dave Hulmes - for the best taste in Soulful House & Garage All of the contributors to the Crossover and Sweet & Deep threads...........
-
Ditto..... ...so many great new tunes.....so few plays..
-
A modern soul anthem in certain parts....no question... MEL WAITERS HOW CAN I GET NEXT TO YOU LET ME SHOW YOU HOW TO LOVE CD ONLY WALDOXY -

Thanks Gareth, I always thought the lead vocals sounded different on Man From The Sky, but had assumed the difference was just Carlos Wright.....interesting slice of label history.
-
It's a hard record for certain, I only know of a couple of copies, and I'm sure there's another interesting story behind the first and second press credit changes. I've got a Canadian RCA copy....which I'd say is pretty rare too.....
-
Nice one..... ....report back again when you've found Dave..... Quality tune...always wondered who these guys were.....they get a mention in Robert Pruter's book, but no real details.

[quote name='drew' date='08 January 2010 - 09:45 PM' Posted info: Expect to hear this where ever I'm playing through 2010.....it's a bit special.... Always preferred Where's there true love and Wanted to fall in love by T k Murray aka C.A.T but what do i know, records i tipped in Sean's tips thread before have bombed so take no notice. Andy Mann

Just found this..... https://www.normanrecords.com/records/101080 Puple Mundi = The Wright Family.... ....and it never occurred to me that Milton Wright and Betty Wright might be related.....doh...
-
Here's another tangent.....I've had my copy since the early 80's, bought it off Mark "Many A Time" Chackett.......oops digressing on a tangent, that'll get me into trouble ....anyhow....it's just occurred to me that I don't know anything about the group....anyone any wiser on the details ???
-
I bought my copy off of Jim Tennant in the late 80's (it was a Shotts spin) and sold it almost immediately afterwards. I didn't listen to it until you posted the actual details, which prompted a distant and dark memory of it. I thought I'd jsut check it to see if the years had improved it..............they hadn't ....... As for "You're So Much Woman" being known......nobody said it wasn't... ...and not that expensive either for the quality you get...
-
I'd take synthesizers over a pair of spoons and an old tin can every day of the week.....
-
Sorry Pete, I thought would have been obvious..... .....opportunity for more, fresh and quality dance floor soul...
-
Not my cup of tea Ken......had and moved it on yonks ago, but this one stayed....and I think answers the question on whether he's black..... CHINO FEASTER - YOU'RE SO MUCH WOMAN -
