  1. Have to agree, it's a very soulful double-sider, and whilst the Sensations aren't in the background, it has everything else that made the Sensations productions so special....John Washington's vocal talents are as strong on this release as "Demanding Man".... it's a must have 45..
  2. I have it on vinyl too......don't see it to many times on either plastic, not in good condition anyhow...
  3. The very first outings of so many great tunes get obscured over time and we lose track of who first played what and where...and credit inevitably goes to the DJ who is most associated with a certain tune, but rarely to the DJ that first risked emptying the dance floor with something new and different. So....... here's a few tunes that are big departures from the standard 4 to the floor, that found later appreciation, but were probably played to empty floors back in the day... Nite-Liters - K-Gee Skull Snaps - My Hang Up Is You Montclairs - Hung Up On Your Love RPM Generation - Rona's Theme Boogie Man Orchestra - Lady, Lady, Lady Del-Rays Inc. - Destination Unknown Frankie Crocker - Ton Of Dynamite Prince George - Wrong Crowd Raw Soul - The Gig Shout up if you know the who's, when's, where's.... and sometimes the why's.... It'll be interesting (for me anyway) to see who the brave and maverick DJs of the day were Don't want to limit the thread to the left field tunes, but thought they might be a good start......
  4. I don't think Kenny's nerves'll stand it....
  5. Thanks to everyone that gave the show a listen....... the next show will be pre-recorded... ... then maybe I'll avoid a repeat of the comedy start.. Here's the playlist to go with the neatly edited download file that Joan very kindly found for us..... 6. Quality selection that man, some very special tunes in that 2011 mix..... You're right, It was a very good year
  7. That nice fellah Kenny Mac has invited me to play on Soul People on Sunday 15th, so if you're up for a truly across the board session of great soul on Sunday morning, then tune in for a listen at 10 o'clock. Playing everything from current Lifeline spins to new release soul ......and everything in between.
  8. Since everyone seems to have responded with those old fashioned vinyl tunes, here's a few fresher tunes that should get a bit of appreciation for at least a couple of weeks on the dark side.... Sandra St. Little - I am Better - Honeycomb Music Revelations - I Gotta Have It - Decision Records Alicia Myers - Journey - Love Town Music Betty Wright - In The Middle Of The Game - Ms B. Records James Taylor Quartet - Woman - James Taylor Quartet - Chinchin Records .... and one for the jazzier heads out there... Sunlight Square - Skyscrapers - Sunlight Square No danger in any hype lifting the value of these tunes up for at least 20 years....
  9. Gotta agree with you..... this is a great contender for the most soulful tune ever put on a 45
  10. Possibly the best Nothern / Jazz hybrid tune since Lou Pride's I'm Coming Home In The Morning.....absolutely fantastic backing track with totally insane horn section.....love it Can't wait to hear thr unreleased version Dave.... get the press warmed up...
  11. I've always considered this early pressing to be a re-release error. Whoever pressed it obviously had access to some original tapes, and used a different take, so it could be considered a legitimate issue on that basis. I remember being horrified when I bought it as a 15 year old, when there was no school bell at the start, and began the search to find a 'real' one. It would be interesting to know who put the alternate take out, it could well have been Doc Kyle, since there could have only been 3-4 years between the original release and the alternate take release. I also have the much later pressing with the instrumental track on the flip, which according to a label listing had a release number credited to Doc Kyle Orchestra, though I've never seen or heard of a real one.
  12. I remember first hearing the Parisians played out at Bedford all-nighter, around '81, some time before Irish Gregg latched on to it. Mick Godfrey had turned up a few copies at the time and was knocking them out for a fiver. It just goes to show that really, really bad records without a trace of soul given enough deck time can become monster floor fillers, and fetch crazy values.... only on the Northern scene.... I didn't buy it then for a fiver, and I wouldn't now. Chalky's right, it's totally played out, but there's a better reason that it shouldn't be played......it's awful.... IMO of course.
  13. I've found that nights advertised with an ATB policy generally have a music bias. An ATB night with a Northern bias will throw in a few modern tracks, and a modern / crossover biased night might play the odd 60's tune. All promotions that offer a fresher music policy, whether they are Northern or Modern nights, generally mix in some classics, and tunes you know and love, they have to, but they're also very far from ATB. There's really no such thing as ATB, not in the UK at any rate, the maturity of the scene has diversified far and wide, so on the upside there's plenty of choice, though on the downside, there's many a night that runs the risk of lower attendance because the music policy is aimed at the thinner end of demand. Most will pay their admission knowing what they're in for, based on the DJs on the night and the promoter's music policy. The nearest thing available to ATB are multi-room promotions where different styles can be played to different crowds, some of whom may wander between rooms to get their ATB mix. If you're looking for ATB in a single room promotion then expect to be disappointed because in the UK that scene has long gone.
  14. I'll stop being one of the 1300+ watchers of this thread to agree with Ian on James Wells 'Baby I'm Still The Same Man' as being one hell of a tune. Stands head and shoulders above eveything else that Mr. Levine put together, though the other tracks that were put out on James Wells ain't too bad either.
  15. Spot on! A perfect insight to the difference between those of us that want to keep things moving on, and others that are content with the playlist from a scene they left 30+ years ago.
  16. So then Pete, was Hendesford a Working Mens Club do, where it didn't matter that you'd played a bootleg, ooops, soory a dub, to your mates ? Sounds to me like you say one thing, but practice something different. Good on Dave for putting your 'dub' playing in it's place
  17. I think what you mean to say is that most people people that play at local soul nights don't play originals, but then in truth they're not DJs...are they ? I don't know any 'top DJs' that play re-issues, it's one of the reasons they are top DJs... they don't compromise.... fact. As for your thoughts on Al Williams on La Beat..... well that just about puts into perspective your first statement...... you just don't what you're talking about.
  18. If you have to ask......then you don't understand
  19. Just sorting tunes for the Brothers Of Soul night in a couple of weeks time and reacquainted myself with Ortheia Barnes on Coral.... the flipside "Joey" would fit in to your Spacey Detroit set perfectly too....
  20. Hi Bob, Give Gloria Taylor - Don't Want To Be A Girl That Cries / Total Disaster (Mercury) a spin, both sides fit the sound you're looking for, as you'd expect with Dale Warren on the arrangement
  21. So you think this is a good thing then ? TV shows have never presented the scene in any other way than embarassing, with the exception maybe of This England. Banjo or his mate, not sure which I wnt to be.
  22. Just what the scene needs, TV of people in their 50's demonstrating dance moves from their teen years for the world to see. Why can't you get some younger dancers to at least put some positive perspective in place ?
  23. Upfront meaning new(ish) to the scene, whether that's Northern or Modern. The term 'upfront' on the Northern scene seems to have replaced the term 'rare soul' that used to be applied to distinguish between an oldies based scene, and the more progressive scene, currently championed by Lifeline. That's all. I really don't get why so many posts on this thread want to make a point about the 'upfont' scene being elitist, it isn't any different to the way it has always been. It's just staying true and holding on to the values that the Northern scene always held, in playing unknown and obscure soul music. The vast majority of us attending all-nighters in years past would have expected to hear new sounds, and were caught up in that scene each and every weekend, so what's changed? If the Northern scene back then was considered to be elitist, well by comparisson then the scene that Lifeline continues to progress is no different. The real change is in the part of the scene that denies progression and no longer understands one of the key elements that made the scene what we wanted and what kept us coming back for more.
  24. Non-mainsteam, upbeat soul with a range of styles from jazz through funk, and unfortunately, occasionally some soul flavoured pop. So you're mate's definition of "if it wasn't played at Wigan in the early years" it's out of bounds, doesn't work for me. Though come to think of it all of the above were covered at Wigan at some point or another.
