Just one listen to the brilliant Aretha, Gladys, Walter Jackson and the Purify’s tracks, convinced us not to wait for FDA approval, so we took the plunge and shared them with the world on vinyl for the very first time. Recorded in 1968, Arthur Alexander‘s magnificent “I Need You Baby” reached legendary status during the tape-swapping epidemic of the late 70' /80’s. The first traces of Alexanderitus were linked back to a tape dispensed by a north London mod by the name of Randy Cozens, which went viral. Even today, the mere mention of the title to any of those C60- swap-survivors can cause severe heart palpitations. Down in Memphis, they tend to practice the holistic approach to heartaches. Southern folk understand it’s about the voice and it’s natural healing powers, especially when it’s being administered by the likes of the Soul Children and Shirley Brown, who instinctively inject the perfect amount of ache, warmth and emotion to hit just the right spot. May we prescribe at least, two listens a day, taken with or without food. Helping with recovery we have included tracks by our care team Maxine, Gil Scott-Heron and the Isleys, whose gentle grooves will help nurse you back onto the dance floor in record time. Here’s what soul music connoisseur, Brian Goucher has to say… In May 2023 I stumbled over MT Jones and his "I’d Be Lying", I was totally transfixed with the subtle nod to Robert Parker's immortal "I Caught You In A Lie" couple that with a unique and soulful voice and you have something very special. He is already a seasoned singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who started his journey at the age of 8 on the piano, his music is grounded in his affair with soul music; Motown, Stax and Atlantic featured heavily in the early years, his earliest influence being the legendary Ray Charles. He has travelled the world honing his talents which he repeatedly reveals on his ability to seamlessly combine the past with the present day to output serenely soulful and timeless music. Soul radio in the UK has already given airtime with frequent plays of the topside. Flip the 45 over for the stunning builder “In My Arms” which morphs into a compulsive piece of soul music in its own right. An utterly fabulous release.

So, the word’s out on our third Creative Soul release, which if everything goes according to plan is scheduled for January. This time we’re shining a light on the very talented and rarely heard Jewel Bass, pulling the incredible ‘I Need Love’ out of the shadow of ‘Just Don’t Love You’, both recorded in 1978 as Centaura and released on the near mythical Spiral LP in 1979. Whilst we know and love Jewel Bass and her recordings as a solo artist, within groups such as Centaura / Carbon Copies and as a featured (but often uncredited) vocalist in her work with Natural High, Sho-Nuff, and Freedom, very little is known about Centaura. Aside from the Spiral LP, the group seem to have little other recording output. A 45 was released by them in 1981 ‘Centauraland’ / ‘Why Can’t We Love’. Recorded at Lockett’s Recording Studio in Birmingham ALA, produced and arranged by Centaura and released on their own Centaura label. They also participated in the Budweiser Showdown from which ‘Your Love Is All I Need’ was released as a Budweiser Showdown 12” in 1983. We hope you’ll agree with us that ‘I Need Love’ is worthy of a 45 release in its own right, and of course what else would you put on the flip other than the incredible ‘Just Don’t Love You’. Great to hear that Keb's fine and well, but as we were discussing at the weekend, is there any chance that his Rockabilly records were washed away....

I doubt that you could categorically confirm that to be the case....unless of course you were there at the time, or moonlight as the label's sound engineer.

That was my first thought Pete, it could be, but the vocals are different enough to be two vocalists.

.....and has anyone noticed that the vocals on 'When We're Alone Tonight' are shared, it's not just backing vocals, it's more than that, there are at least two 'lead' vocalists that interchange on the song..... seems to add more credence to theory of it being a group recording.

Just out of interest, and I know this on a bit of a tangent......but... does anyone know the line-up for The Sweets ? Were they the same group that recorded on Valiant in '65, which were Felice Taylor and her sisters?
