on to Sundays
Dutch fans gotta love em - I worked for a Dutch company for a few years, and whenever Holland play Germany the Dutch hold up banners with “Can we have our grandfathers bike back” as when the Germans retreated WWII they nicked all the bikes to pedal get back to Germany 😂🤣

Back in the 70ts there was oldies sounds and newie sounds or shufflers and I guess now looking back new old sounds being played for the first time - usually a DJ would put 3 or 4 newies sounds together - wasn’t about how old the record was it was about the sound
Youve been gone to long
Seven day lover
Night of the Wolf
Burning spear
Visibly looking down at the floor of the Casino , when they changed the sound you could see people leave the dance floor as well as go onto the dance floor
changed the tempo 🤔 yea right like we cared - wizzing our heads off

Simon - I remember it taking the roof off the Casino from mid 70ts however a UK release in 68 it would have been smashed out at the Wheel / Torch / Va Vas and every single oldies night at all venues - great clapping bits to it, which you don’t hear as much now but hey - magic sound - I actually brought the demo from the Casino for £5 back in 76 however it’s got a chip out in the intro which is one of the major leads into a record - but apart from that plays great 👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Honestly - Am not bothered, I think we’re over thinking this 🤔 as long as they keep off the dance floor with there drinks 🍺 am all good - I only go to oldies nights, so technically newcomers will hear the oldies for the first time - making the sound to them new 😂🤣
Imagine hearing Freddie Chavez for the first time 😳I also don’t see that many people under 50 attending - who are really into NS, I see some people (usually in a group of 4) attending as most soul events are a safe environment, and you know what the music sounds a bit like Motown - they enjoy themselves and it’s there monthly date night out - all good 👍🏻

Was it staged, contrived and multi-takes?
Not staged but when they filmed all the lights came on which semi emptyed the floor - taking photos/ flash or lights on and filming, kinda put you in a whos that why are they filming paranoid feeling - mixed with amphetamine
Some people might have attended because it was being filmed, but did others stay away because if it?
I came up on a coach from Aldershot it left the roundabout club about 6 at night - the coach was as usal for an oldies night packed plus picked a couple more up at Birmingham Hilton - not once did I hear anyone mention that there was filming being done at the Casino that nightAnd was the filming 'the beginning of the end' for want of a better expression
The filming boosted the scene directly after - some people lasted some people liked the gear and some people wondered what it was all about and didn’t get it - end of the 70ts some strange sounds getting spun - Joe90 etc - However the casino died in 81 in a respective way - and those who went have memories that will last a life time - the good times and the bad 👍🏻

Paul - don’t bite mate, imagine thinking / being part of something that you fully don’t understand / was never there / and impossible to duplicate due to social media / phones / cameras and dare I say No smoking / let alone scoring gear / ODing and genuinely looking after you’re mates without stabbing them in the back - just to make you look good On various social media posts - I say poor them - we were in that scene that era 1975 - 1989 and still going today - they cant take away our memories, love for the music or more importantly our opinion 👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Side comment
went to a Soul night at Leicster a couple of years ago - most of the dancers were about 58 to mid sixties (am 64) then a shuffler came on - this guy jumped up large belly and shuffled just like 75/76 back then anything that you danced to like that was classified as a newie - I didn’t know the guy but knew he was there back in the day - shit he was good like really good - there’s a saying “when you know - you know” 👍🏻

Interesting as I remember getting photographed but can't place when
We thought at the time it was the DS
🤣😂- What about the time you did two nighters on the trot Fri & Sat then thought the DS were following you home - all the way from Wigan or Wakefield- back to Huntingdon- then peering out the window through the nets to see if they’ve gone 🤪🤪😳😳😳😳😳😳😳

Hi Wiggy
You are totally right about the bouncers being in Crown court the week before the all-nighters started I was one of them, It caused d a fallout at the time with Gerry Marshall the manager and owner of the club, as a result indirectly it resulted in RW and Mike Walker being projected into the Casino hall of fame I’ve spoke to Chalky aka Karl at length about this story, trust me it’s true, but let’s leave the memories as they are and move on ,I was also a patron of the Room at the Top a much more underground soul club at the time running arable leith the wheel 1965 to 68, it was Mr M.s formally the Palais . Had more cabaret on , the Empress ballroom when big acts were on Little Richard , Edwin S , Jimmy R.etc etc as a rule who ever performed at Wigan performed at Bolton Casino the same night or a week later the same consortium owned both clubs till Gerry took sole ownership of Wigan in 1972 when the Palais became Mr M,s or Mr Marshall Gerry,s second name, Soul music and soul groups had been played at the Casino from the mid 1960,s more so since the closure of the Room at the top in 1968 69,

Great hearing from people who were there at the time / and an important part of the history - top man 👏🏻👏🏻 Always find past experiences and knowledge fascinating - as what was acceptable back then and how people behaved would be blown up on social media today in a second
