  3. Hi y'all I'm looking for modern/progressive soul nights in and around Birmingham/West Midlands. I plan to visit Disciples of Soul at The Sunflower Lounge and Uber at the Rainbow next weekend but still on the lookout for similar events. Any recommendations? Ta.
  4. Hi the first northern soul single that I ever bought was bought blind. It was Jo Armstead's "I Feel An Urge Coming On" on Giant and cost me 50p from a junk shop on the Stratford Rd, Camp Hill in my home town Brum. Still got it and it's got my name written on the label! Yeah I'm the one... I've spent a lot of money buying blind over the years but by being incredibly cautious it's generally paid off. What's worse is not spending money on great records when they're in your hands - I'm still grieving over a Magnificent Men album I didn't buy at a Birmingham NEC record fair a long, long time ago! It was only a tenner! My worst blind buy was 18 Joe Tex singles from a stall in the Rag Market - one decent A side amongst a lot of mediocre dross - but then again they were only 50p each.Swings roundabouts etc...
  5. "I'm like a one-eyed cat peeping in a seafood store" - "Shake,Rattle and Roll" Big Joe Turner Pretty much any line from "Home Is Where The Hatred Is" or "Is That All There Is?"
  6. I was reading this with interest and thinking but what about Walter Jackson? But then...I salute you, Mal C. And Esther Phillips! I just lurrve "Mojo Hannah"...Maybe a little leftfield but gotta consider The Mighty Sparrow? "Only A Fool..." still slays me.
  7. Marlena Shaw at the Assembly Rooms(?) in Leamington Spa in Jan 2009. Dunno if it's part of a tour tho.
  8. Hi I know it's been out for a while now and I might have missed a discussion about it but after reading the Raphael Saadiq thread I wanted to mention "Reset To Zero" by Anthoney Wright. I like it a lot even tho it's got a retro flavour. While it isn't a patch on Walter Jackson, I spent a pleasant few minutes listening to it.
  9. Hi I'm looking for soul nights I can travel to by train from Brum and still get back in time to put the cat out and have my cocoa. Any suggestions, please? I like northern and modern! Shuggie
