  4. I bought a record recently, through Gemm. It was a cheapie, £2 plus £1.20 postage. A few days later it arrived, the right artist and label but the wrong record. It was through the self-proclaimed biggest rare northern soul website, so i checked for a phone number and their trading hours (it was a saturday morning) and rang, speaking to S***e. I told him what happened and asked for the right one to be sent. I got a monologue about these cheap records not being worth selling financially or timewise, and as a dealer of 30 years standing he wouldn't look for it himself and would probably have to refund it, and for me to keep the other record. End of call, and about an hour later the money was put back into my paypal account. So he didn't look for it and, wasn't in the least bit sorry for the mistake made and it obviously wasn't expensive enough to care about(what price for caring, £10 or £100, but definitely not £2)! Also saw a record on Anglo's site, tried to buy it but the system wouldn't take my money. I rang up, spoke to Tim and he coudn't find it where it should be, but said he'd investigate (i.e. get Rick to look). Rang me back and sorted it. Arrived the next day! That's how it's done!
  5. Been digging "Woman" at home for many years and also keen on "Everyday I Go Sailing" on Rama. Check out the album on Amazon.
  6. In fine working order. Plays at the right speeds and nothing damaged. There are a few marks on it and i wrote my name underneath, which has faded now, but what do you expect for a much loved and much used extension to my vinyl arm. Also only Soul records played on it since 1990! Currently £88.88.

  9. I got a copy from chester many years ago, just after Rod put it out on Kon-kord saying it had never come out originally. Colin Dilnot also bought a copy from the same shop around the same time. Nice gatefold sleeve and quite a light label colour compared to the 45 design. As Andy L says great longer version of YBKH. There's not many copies around and the last one went on ebay for £450 from an American seller. Andy Love

  16. Back in 1972 one of my mates sisters was going out with one of the soulspinners 4 from ormskirk. we were just spotty schoolkids who had a penchant for reggae at the time, so we already had a black music background. He left a box of records at her house and we had a listen, as you do to these great unknown records. JJ Barnes-Sweet Sherry, Otis Smith-Let Her go, Joy Lovejoy-In Orbit etc. Later on i started to hear these tracks at the lunchtime disco at school ( Pete Lawson was in the year above me) in Ormskirk. As i said, great records but it was only when heard in the right surroundings they take on a whole new meaning. For me that was at Wigan Casino. Walking in to the Beachcomer, through the puddles on the floor and the holdalls strewn everywhere, the sound was the very atmospheric "under my thumb", not soul but eeirie. Then up to the Empress ballroom where the music hit you right in the chest with the bass and, it seemed like an electric current was passing through you, making you more alive than you ever felt before, and ever would again, it seemed. Billy Prophet-what can i do, Garnett Mimms-looking For you, linda Jones-My Heart Needs A break, Johnny Bragg-There talking About Me, all had that immense sound when in the right location, and from then on i was hooked. I sold all my jamaican 45's and albums to bankroll this new obsession. Andy Love.

  18. Paul Burton-So Very Hard To Make It or Sebastian Williams-Get Your Point Over. I first heard Dean play Sebastian Williams at Parkers early doors (the best time for the best tunes) and asking him about it a while later he was adamant he'd played the flip instead! I replied that as i danced to it i knew better! He couldn't argue with that logic.
  19. What about anniversary tickets? Haven't seen any of the early ones being offered.
  20. There was a couple of unissued tracks that got one play only at Essence last year that deserve more plays, "Tommy Tate-You Want Me", the old Otis Clay album track with superior vocals that snuck out on Garry Capes label recently and "Sam Dees-Gimme A Little Action" still unissued. Andrew.
