Dixieland Showbar. Takes me back. I was living in Aughton til xmas 1974. It was never an out 'n out soul night though. Dj Happy would play the latest Mud chart single next to Jackie Wilson or the Invitations. Downstairs at the Scarisbrick Hotel had a weekly soul night of the funky variety. I had to wait until I moved to Warrington to get a twice weekly Northern Soul night, at the Carlton Club, plus many other nights in the vicinity.

One Kent track that must go on, and is made for this label, is Loleatta Holloway-This mans arms ( the longer version).

Pre-ordered mine in November, and received this week. Great, great music and hope there will be many more to come. Will they be sourced exclusively from the Ace/Kent catalogue ( Judy Clay-Its Me, please. Stax sampler album only) or will we see some tracks licensed from the independents (NowAgain have had an Eddie Finlay track on one of their comps, but didn't use his utterly heart-rending "Sad Honored Night")?

Came out with different flip sides-The place where sorrow hides, and, What can I do. i have both on Down East. The first, a vg copy, the second a battered copy (probably a g, or vg-) but has the rarer What can I do on the flip ( I have played What can I do out recently and it sounded good loud). After Footsee and Wigans Ovation, I refused to say I was into Northern Soul. When anyone asked I 'd say it was Rare Soul that floated my boat. So that excluded all the chart stuff from the equation and left the real meat of the scene-rare and juicy rather than well done or burnt! This was to questions asked by the great unwashed, as all of us one the scene just knew anyway. Talking to Barry May about it recently, and he said he just called it Northern.

First went to Pitches with Barry,Ged and Flanny. In the back with Flanny and his big box of records. Snug. might have been snowing that night as well. loved it, so brought my own posse the next time and carried on to The Phoenix nights. After the first time with the Scousers, I don't think I ever missed a night, even though it was a good 2 hr journey and we always got lost (pre sat nav) and I was always working the next day! Music was fantastic, the guys were very welcoming, Gary's records were ace, and cheap. So many memories. At The Phoenix one snowy night (was it always snowing) we where coming out to the car, and there was a drunken bloke urinating on the car. He turned round, while still pissing and started talking to us. It was Mike Ward! Allreet Andy. Good night tonight eh. I'm a bit pissed. what can you say? Just glad we didn't come in my car that night!
