  1. Agree entirely. It was hard to see Little Anthony not do better use your head and Eddie Holman not do where I'm not wanted or hurt but, having gone with only vague hopes that they might, the joy of seeing them at all completely took over. I have to say that I unexpectedly, really enjoyed both Ce Ce Peniston and Jody Watley. Great to see Eddie Floyd. Last saw him mid eighties in Manchester, he's aged better than me. Temptations were very impressive too. David Guest said he was coming back with another tour in October....I'll go again.
  2. Hanging Up My Heart For You - Solomon Burke Tell Her Love Has Felt The Need - Eddie Kendricks You Keep Holding Back on Love - Carletta Sue Directly From My Heart - Little Richard Why Can't We Be Lovers - Holland Dozier Walls That Separate Our Love - John Edwards
  3. Little Anthony really can still sing. Sadly, no Better Use Your Head. Just Going Out of My Head and Tears on My Pillow. Eddie Holman still hitting the high notes too.
  4. Yes, but the vinyl through the post experience isn't anywhere near as good as the bought in a shop one. The joy of buying something you hadn't set out to buy! It's that whole flick, flick, flick, whoah bloody hell thing. I guess that's why King Bee Records is my favourite shop.
  5. Soul Nation 104.6 was big in central Manchester. Not much Northern though.
  6. What a fantastic thread this is! Tyrone Davis has been an all time favourite for me and also have the Chuck Jackson and Alton Ellis versions. The rest were unknown to me. Joe Johnson is an absolute killer for me, Cheers to each and everyone who posted them!
  7. Fair enough. Never listen to mainstream pop radio nowadays. It's clearly got better since I last did! Would you be unimpressed if a niter DJ played Don't let me Lose this Dream by Aretha for example? Does it have less nighter credibility than say the versions by The Ones (way inferior in my opinion) or The Sweet Inspirations might have? I'm not being arsey here but am genuinely interested as it had never occurred to me that some artists would be viewed as being sort of tainted because they'd had chart success. Cheers John
  8. Interesting debate, never thought I'd hear Aretha referred to as Radio 2 fodder! I'm not an allnighter goer nowadays. Work means I need my wits about me in a way I couldn't sustain if I still was. I still do 3 or 4 soul nights a month around the north west and sometimes, irrespective of who is DJing (big name or youngster), a tune pops up that I haven't danced to for a good while. Funnily enough The Miracles - Whole Lotta Shakin' in My Heart did it recently. At the time, I was too preoccupied to think it was inspired DJing. In retrospect, it was. I'm not much bothered whether it hits someone else's credibility test, I just wanted to dance like I did 40 years ago....or die trying.
  9. Sounds like a Sergio Leone Spaghetti Western sample to me.
  10. Brilliant idea, Well done the Mayor of Madison.
  11. I've really enjoyed this compilation. I am usually of the Bah Humbug persuasion until the Saturday before Xmas, but not since getting this! Nice to have a clean version of Lonnie Hill and, a bit unexpectedly, I like the Eugene Wilde and Stephanie Mills tunes quite a lot.
  12. You've been a busy lad Pete; tough choice between this and Out of the Past set as they are both excellent, but this one just shades it for me - Gene Chandler is just a killer track! Cheers John
  13. The Hard Rock was a very handy 400 yards from my house. They ran a few Northern nights under its The Village tag on Wednesday nights in the mid 70's I remember Andy Peebles DJing there.
  14. Gaetano's was in Back Piccadilly. Martin from Roger Eagle's Rafters Nights DJ'd there when I went. Valentines in Chorlton used to have lots of good live acts.
  15. I shall, most certainly, be attending. I am one who delights in all manifestations of the Terpsichorean muse.
  16. Hello Steve, I've really enjoyed those and would appreciate a download link for part 3. Cheers John
  17. Jordan's in the grey / black top.
  18. That's fantastic spinning...... he's dancing next to Jordan Wilson who's pretty good too!
  19. Thanks for posting that. Nice to see a bit of recognition for a man who contributed so much to rare or northern soul.
  20. What? No-one on Soul Source wants to express an opinion? Why so shy? Surely this has never happened before? I liked the layout, the previously unseen pictures and the personal stories. I thought the balance of emphasis between music and gear wasn't right. Three stars from me.
  21. Blimey, I'd've said that was an ass....
  22. I go out to dance. I like the music to be loud enough that I can't hear what anybody says. I mostly go to nights round the North West where people shake hands and say Hiya. That's plenty for me. Every so often I'll see someone for the first time in years and we'll say more than hello but apart from the music we usually have nowt in common. The Mrs, on the other hand, loves a natter with all and sundry...especially the kids who she has taught over the years about half of whom seem to have turned into soulies.
