  1. No Time - John & The Weirdest
  2. hahaha. You're not wrong. I agree with the original post too. The gallery can be a good thing but too often it's used without thought. A bit of editing wouldn't go amiss. I wonder what the casual viewer must think of the Rare Soul scene based on the contents of the Soul Source Gallery section. We think it impossibly cool and underground - outsiders looking at the Gallery must think it looks like a largely deserted disco for elderly mental patients taking place in a scout hut.
  3. As of this moment in time it's Anne Briggs and her stunningly beautiful version of 'Standing On The Shore'
  4. An absolute classic design and a bargain second hand. Some may find the speed change mechanism a little fiddly though. Mind you at a ton apiece you could have one for 33 and one for 45.
  5. Alan it's an absolute bloody nightmare! never again! I don't think I've ever used such bad language in my life! If you fancy doing it yourself there's some details here RB250 Rewiring Or a company called Origin Live do it for £75. Good luck.
  6. Deck about £400 second hand - Cartridge about £100ish Rewired the tonearm myself - so in total not much more than a Technics really.
  7. Roksan Xerxes with Rega RB300 Tonearm rewired with Silver Litz cable / Roksan Offboard Power Supply. Goldring 1042 Cartridge.
  8. Sam and Dave do a pretty decent version too on their Double Dynamite LP.
  9. Try posting up a WTB in the Seiko Forum. Link below. I've managed to get some rare old bits from there. Seiko Forum
  10. Some, but by no means all. The Omega was missing a few parts that could be added reasonably easily, but for more complex stuff it's off to an old watchmaker that knows his onions.
  11. Cheers Trevski. I try telling the Mrs that but she doesn't believe me! For me the fun is finding watches in need of a bit of TLC and getting them working again. That Gallet was in shocking condition when i found it. But thanks to the internet I found the bits to restore it. Not bad for a 60 year old watch. Problem is finding the time to wear the buggers though.
  12. Picked up this nice Omega Seamaster from 1966 recently. Needed a couple of parts, but I managed to get her working again. I prefer vintage or military watches in the main. I currently have about 40 which I concede is probably far too many.
  13. This may be the ultimate record disaster story. It's from the late Dave McCadden's excellent Soul Galore fanzine from 1997. I cried with laughter the first time I read it. I'll attach it as a PDF as it's quite long. Jades.pdf
  14. Nope. Deryck Guyler. He did indeed appear in Sykes too however. Deryck Guyler IMDB Link
  15. Deryck Guyler - also played a pretty mean washboard.
  16. Here's a link to Greg Tormo's excellent article about the Emotions and 'Love of a Girl'. Emotions Article
  17. Just checked my Lovers on Philips (40353) and it has the accapella intro as per my Emotions on Vardan. The Philips release is very slightly faster (Running time listed as 2:26, Vardan release 2:34). Was it released on Philips without the intro as well?
  18. Without wishing to sound patronising or offensive, please don't waste your time. Explore the best that London has to offer from a cultural perpective, but don't expect to find interesting or cheap Rare Soul records. We've had 'em all, because we're cheeky cockney tearaways. We're a bit woooah, a bit waaahy... anything that's left is book price or even more. I would imagine that most European cities are the same. Many's the time that I've been to cities in Europe looking for the killer record shops only to be bitterly disappointed.
  19. Isn't there also a version of TMG523 credited to just 'The Spinners?' as well? How does this compare in rarity terms to the 'Detroit Spinners' version?
  20. One man's meat is another man's poison as they say! I love Jan Jones yet think Cheryl Berdell is lightweight dross. I too fail to see the similarity between JJ and Rod Stewart's magnum opus.
  21. Awesome? No. Moment of genius? No. Landmark recording? No. Half-decent new recording that will have its 15 minutes of popularity on the Northern Scene before heading off to obscurity? Very probably. This is just a group of blokes making a reasonably competent homage to late 60's soul. I applaud your enthusiasm though.
  22. There's a lot to like about Kings Go Forth. As soundalikes go they do a very decent job. Their reggae, funk and ska soundalikes are very good as well. Obviously a lot of hard work and attention to detail goes into their appropriation of vintage music styles. I'm sure they're an extremely entertaining live act as well. However, and this is obviously in my very humble opinion - hype aside - where's the originality? Part of the reason I gravitate towards Rare Soul and other related musical fields is the fact that we witnessed a plethora of artists, producers, songwriters etc. at the top of their game - truly some of the greatest musical talents of their generation pushing at boundaries and doing things that just hadn't been done before. By no means was all of it successful either artistically or commercially, maybe that's part of it's perverse and enduring appeal. Kings Go Forth merely pays lip service to the achievements of all those that went before without actually bringing anything new or exciting to the mix. This is no criticism of KGF as a group, I'm sure they're not trying to claim that they're offering anything other than good time party music in a vintage style. But I fail to see how a recording which is bereft of the very originality and sheer mindblowing qualities that Rare/Northern Soul can be capable of at its very best can be described as "one of the best Northern Soul records ever made". Sorry. Again - this is IMHO etc. etc.
  23. I'm building the bonfire as I type...
  24. Not a fan of Hucknall by any stretch of the imagination, but if he wants to pay tribute to an artist that he respects and idolizes then there's no real problem IMHO. As others have said don't go or don't buy the tie-in product. It's pretty unlikely many on Soul Source would so so anyway. It's certainly not going to affect the way I feel about Bobby Bland (or indeed Mick Hucknall). I doubt if he's doing it for crass commercial reasons, because, let's be fair Bobby Bland probably doesn't make a great deal of money out of Being Bobby Bland so I think it highly unlikely Mick Hucknall will.
  25. What about actor Albert Finney's LP on Motown (Albert Finney's Album). Would have loved to have been in the planning meeting when that was discussed. There's also an album of traditional Irish/Rebel songs called "We're Off To Dublin In The Green" by the Abbey Tavern Singers on VIP.
