  1. You know what - that's right - all those on the floor couldn't give a monkeys as they were enjoying themselves (to CC's CD set) and anyway I go to local events to try and support those putting them on! I'm just saying that as a record collector first and foremost then obviously I prefer OVO at events - always got CD's on in the house though as some rare stuff is only on CD!!.
  2. The thread has lost its way because the starting post was actually taken from the 'debate' about Colin Curtis playing CD's at the recent Swallow Gateshead event at which I actually attended. Paul Conroy the promoter is just trying to get the crowd (Newcastle/Gateshead and surrounding area) to experience a few 'name dj's' and is doing a bloody good job IMO, however Colin Curtis caused a few rumblings with his CD set. People expressed the old OVO against cd's, boots etc argument on the thread that followed the article and once again we have another thread about it. Comments from people I talked with on the night were ranging from - who cares the floor is packed - to - fk me all that money I spend on OVO when I could have the worlds best collection on CD! I went along to support a local scene and people I know anyway - I heard some brilliant OVO from the other lads that night. This debate will go on and on and on though........ Personally, I can't get hung up about not having or being able to acquire certain 'top or rare' records but I appreciate those people that put their heart, soul and money into keeping the scene alive by collecting and playing OVO. You have to decide - would you go to an event to just hear them on CD because it was a 'name' DJ playing them. My collecting ethics are OVO and I spend far too much on it in pursuit of a better collection, so ultimately I only play OVO when I DJ. My belief to sort out the wheat from the chaff, is OVO at all events unless advertised otherwise - those that know it is NOT going to be OVO at their events should state it clearly on the ad/posting and then people can make their mind up about attending or not. That way the scene stands or falls, becomes stronger rather than diluted, but ultimately, it keeps going.
  3. Just remembered another one during that second mod revival period 79 onwards or maybe early 80's. It was a nighter at the Red Lion?? Chester Le Street - Bill Swift did it and there was a bus on from Newcastle. Manus - you were at that one I'm sure. Got back about 6 or 7 in the morning and without any money walked home up the central motorway (like you do!) Also Denton Hotel upstairs room around 1974ish always played a Northern spot though it was a general mobile disco night really and was on a Thursday so school the next day!! Don't forget a current one on Bank Hols is the 1OAK restaurant bottom of Dean Street. DJ's from St Doms (Beatin Rhythm club last Sat of month) playing mainly Northern/Motown/RnB 5pm till whenever. Last one we played at was 6th May and was rammed. Jesmond British Legion club currently hosts the North East Soul Union as well. Every 2 months - next one July 7th. Along with the Swallow, Corporation club, Tommas Cricket Club - there's loads of our music being played in and around Newcastle/Gateshead!!
  4. Wow - what a trip down memory lane. Dunelm All Dayer - forgot I'd even been there! As for a few of the other venues the list also brings back the memories. Left the scene early 76 (in terms of attending but still collected) but dipped in and out of many a venue mentioned though mainly the Newcastle scene. Julies club rode through it all very well for a long time. The Mayfair All Nighters and the Sunday Soul Club there were a real treat as well. As usual the music never leaves you and now playing out my collection at St Doms and other smaller venues. Great article - cheers from Tony Fiddes
  5. I know that - hence cash waiting - no takers so far and those that sell to me know I don't mess around on top records
  6. £552.35 in 2010 Buyers market now and cash waiting - how times change if you want to sell nowadays
  7. Hi folks Anyone got a spot on condition of Gambrells - You Better Move ? No writing on labels and great nick please for this Detroit classic - give me a pm with your price to include special delivery please. Cheers Tony
  8. MONEY!!! That's all it's about. No regard to anything else and in ten years when it's a tatty doss house or backpacker inn we'll say - 'Told you so' My city has had it's fair share of 'council led' projects over the years and the ones that disposed of heritage/youth culture etc are now all a crock of shit. The old Victorian - Handyside Arcade - a haunt of everyone from hippies to Mods was demolished years ago to be an extension of Eldon Square shopping centre - oh and the same block housed The Club a Go Go where every sixties beat band, Zoot Money etc and even Hendrix played. Apart from that and surely you must have had one in your town/city - The Mayfair Ballroom a Mecca establishment - I went to every soul nighter there in the late 70's and saw every band imaginable in that hall as well. Now it's a car park under the drinking cess pit called The Gate. Home of every stag and hen and chav getting pissed every weekend Great if you've been and had fun but history was condemned because the council took the leisure group/restaurant chain and multiplex cinema money. The missus loved The Wheel when I eventually dragged her along on a weekend away and it looks like I better get back sharpish. It may be out of everyones control but protest like hell and challenge the authorities involved. They don't do getting upset! I'm sure Pete will find some place in the Northern Quarter and if people consider it died in 71 anyway then at least carry on the spirit of The Wheel once again albeit in a different place! Places come and go but as the future is unwritten, all we have for certain is our memories.
  9. Pleased this was brought back into play as missed this thread -and this type of info/fact finding is a major part of why I love this site - other than buying soul of course. Cheers lads - knowledge of mega proportions!!!!
  10. What a journey - been listening to the show for a couple of years or more Clicked through many a show to find the tune I was needing to hear before buying from ebay or wherever. Also bought from Dusty Groove. Not sure if this phrase is a nationwide one but up in the North East of England we say 'talk to someone long enough and you'll find you are related' !!! Love the story and connections and one thing is true - £5 or £500 - If it floats your boat then it doesn't matter.
  11. Had Tammi Lynn without knowing it was 'Northern' as well as those 'skinhead' Motown sounds (Northern??) Newburn Boys Club - 1973?? (The Tams - Hey Girl and any Supremes etc) Went to Callers in Newcastle and bought all the 'British' stuff - all re-issues of course!!! Also Deon Jackson- Love Makes The World Go Round on Contempo and Right On label stuff. Later bought all those Julies Nightclub sounds. But to be honest I was in a totally different world for years after Bowie in 73 and then the Clash from 76 onwards. Always loved music, but the one I really remember through the amphetimine/drink haze was Bobby Paris on Capitol. Stood in Roger Stewarts flat in Notting Hill looking at racks and fkn racks of singles and he said get this one mate it's a belter! Got that UK issue thing of it with JJ Barnes B side Got me into it again for life. Finally got an original demo many years back from an ex employee of Capitol West Coast - Mint in packet as they say. Also found a mega basement shop in Manchester - Oxford Rd circa'79 Loads of US import Lp's Edwin Starr, Little Anthony etc still got them of course. Now balancing record collecting with following NUFC - both very expensive! Question - Why do I spend ALL my money on records and football? Answer -What else is there to do?

    Dobie Gray R I P....

Out On The Floor 'tonight' and always will be - Keep The Faith! God Bless and thankyou for one of the 'classics' of our scene. Tony
  13. Pete Thanks for posting again - last PC I bought I must have ballsed up on saving stuff and only have parts of this info that I copied and pasted from yonks ago. Nowadays of course they transfer all your files and folders onto your new PC for you in the shop when you buy a new one - now who would have thought of that to save hours and hours of saving to disk at home. Easier these days with the capacity of memory sticks of course so I can cut and paste this lot and add to it when you do!!! A thought though - If you ever get the whole lot complete and in order then please post a file if going into hard copy production seems daunting and expensive or....just ask for a couple of quid in your paypal account and only send to those that pay! You could spice it up with some extra stuff/info that I'm sure you have or can write and that makes the buyer get a better package of info than that you have already given away for free here. Might sound mercenary but you do spend ages on this type of stuff and I'm sure no-one buying it would resell the file and just use for their own education This is the sort of info I want and not just people moaning about what Northern tracks they don't like!!. Fk me what a waste of 2 seconds of your life - just my opinion of course!!! Cheers Tony ps - The Manship British book is very good but your artist info as well as label info is a better way to go and a biog of every artist would be a winner although no doubt keeping you out of mischief for years the time it would take
  14. A guy at this do I guest DJ at had been pestering the last few guest Dj's over the previous 2-3 months. Asking for The Snake all night long. I didn't know this and the next month I'm on this big fkr approaches the decks and stares me bang in the eye. Hey you he says - play The Snake! I said - You're fkn joking mate - even if I had it I wouldn't bring it. He steps forward and I think - Oh fk what have I got on the decks that I don't want trashed - Well I only asked cos I like it he says and about turns heads to the exit and he's never been seen back since. Likewise to others - On one spot I've just played Don Ray, Sam Dees and Herb Ward and some female comes up and asks for 'some decent Northern' !!!! I said - See that box - there's 200 in there but you'll obviously not like any of them so you may as well go home!
  15. Anyone got a superb nick original copy on MGM - no marks on record or label please. PM your best price to include first signed for. Cheers Tony ps - Seen the ebay one by the way so don't need that link NOW SORTED!!!!! Cheers for the pm's.
  16. Here's my Diplomats record - 2x loose pieces of card and a floppy one layer bubble wrap envelope!! All the way from the USofA as well and the guy says he sends all his stuff like that. Trouble is he put the full value on the slip as well - cost another £40 due to customs. Did get a FULL refund though...phew!! Anyone beat this and what do you expect?
  17. I think its great when I find or I am given a 'free' juke box to play when on a day off. It's music, it's (Northern) soul music and it's what I love!!! (Doesn't matter if I don't like a tune but I still might learn something from it) Cheers Tony
  18. Pete - 3 main UK based dealers have all had this at 700 in the last few months. All mint and clean labels (right way?) They sat a while and it looked like 2 were maybe taken down as I didn't spot SOLD posted against them. One on the link still sat there as well. Depends what commission he wants to give or if not then at up to 600 I think it would go. People got to remember that dealers have web, ad costs etc so got to make a quid or two on top. Mamie heading up to a ton now I notice on some set sales. But what do we know as money is so tight at the moment Cheers Tony
  19. KENT single needed - Anyone got a spare one not in a collection? PM please Cheers Tony
  20. Does this mean I have to publicly thank Peter Richer for putting me on to it - guess I just have then! Searched for only a few weeks after getting to hear it at yours Peter and although not the best nick it was £80 well spent. Never seen one since till JM auction so if in great nick then not surprised it went high but hell not that high? Having gone mad on JM just Xmas gone for a trophy piece of vinyl, (though got it for well less than I would have paid in the end) I guess we need to equate rarity with condition and of course - how bloody desperate to have it right now rather than search for however long it may take. On another note re daft price on JM just last year - Bobby Paris - I Walked Away - Capitol Demo Went to 400 a few days before the end and as you may have guessed - no more bids Mad - condition must have been double Mint eh !!!
  21. Thanks for that - but that one is number 135 with Karmello Brooks on the other side Number 117 is a Carla Thomas double side - same main song as 135 though
  22. Hi Carla Thomas number 117 O C Tolbert number 111 Yes I know the likelihood is not good - but anyone not got them in a complete collection and want to sell? PM me details to start the deal off Cheers
  23. I much prefer a direct payment to the bank account of the seller - that shows a level of trust and honesty and I have this arrangement with some dealers. As a buyer and not a seller/dealer though I do wish sometimes that dealers were a bit more open with the deal even though both sides want the best price possible. Depending what you have in a record obviously dictates what you can allow for, though some seem to not want to budge at all on even sharing postage for example If I'm paying 300 quid for a record I want the deal legally protected so lets both lose 2% and get on with it. Having said that I would fully expect someone on here to be straight down the middle with any deal - heck sometimes charges have come on when paying as gift and I've just thought -what the fk' and made the transaction. My motto is to do a little background on any deal - look at someone's profile, see their posts on here etc - on ebay for example just think that if they are 100% on over 2000 deals then I think it may be ok. I know you all know to do this but remember if someone won't budge on the way the deal is done and especially will not do signed for or special then pass it by.- If it doesn't seem right then it probably isn't Obviously Paypal is a banking system and we all know that banks rip us off for whatever charges they can - hence the exemption for transaction protection when done as a Gift. Too many Gift transactions and dealers will have this highlighted to them and can't risk losing the facility so they should be flexible. Cheers Tony .
  24. Don't think this info is on the thread - Interesting comment re the identity of the singer posted on youtube vid of 'Kenny Carter' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-bK_2GYHzdEhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-bK_2GYHzdE If the link doesn't work go to youtube and search Kenny Carter What's That and read the interesting comment from someone who reckoned there was another take in 1967 whilst the original was cut in 1966. Could be fiction but who knows?
