I've played it out at Beatin Rhythm Newcastle but confined it to one of my early slots while the place busied up - might try it on the later one sometime. Crackin tune methinks !! Oh and interesting info on the identity etc so thanks for input and insight folks.
-
Nice one Phil and possibly administration and currency rates could account for the shortfall on such an amount. Another lesson to be learned for all of us eh! Tony

Must be all sitting in collections then so I can see why some people will dive in on it, even though a demo. Put a WANT ad out the other day and not a sniff from anybody ! Certainly a one to cash in on if you are not out and about playing it as it's back big time - packed the floor at the dayer I was at last week. Oh by the way - cash still waiting !! Cheers

Tonite - Northern Soul Bbc Living For The Weekend
NUFCSOUL replied to Mike's topic in All About the SOUL
Just some feedback from me ! Everyone of my 'mainstream' friends who watched it thought it was great! Not one of them collects records or goes to any do's though and I expect this documentary will not make them do so in the future. I didn't expect anything less than this from them of course and when in the past they talk 'Northern Soul' to me they have also no interest in matrix numbers, white promos or reversed labels but always name drop a 20 greatest hits type tune and I have no problem with that if that is what they like. It was a TV show with music they liked with some characters they may have recognised and they enjoyed it for what it was. If it made them buy a CD the next day then it was probably from amazon or a download and not a high street shop so that in itself is an indicator of how the world has moved on so much from the so called glory days/demise/underground/commercial venture cycle of the scene. If however any documentary or perhaps the forthcoming film brings just one real enthusiast to the current scene then that will be a welcome addition. I respect who did what, went where, wore what, played what and find it all a fascinating insight to the development of the soul music scene in the UK, but the politics are not for me - apart from OVO (Let's not do that one again though. It's just because I'm a collector!) Everything has what we call a history..... and if it has not become extinct then keeps it moving on and evolving. Simple to me. Now back to the sales section !!! -
Plenty out there it seems when you read the threads but just not for sale. As a buyer not a seller I see Manships 2k value is happily ignored in this instance and buyers just go crazy for it due to rarity. I still think looking at averages since 2008 that it's a 2.5k to 3k record but then as a potential buyer I would !!! The 3.8k end price on this latest one suggests a HUGE premium for the great condition it was in. I've just got to find one now as a drive in the UK is more appealing than risking USPS on that sort of value - I wouldn't be able to sleep till it got here !!
-
Agree totally with the opening post. Had a similar experience with a record in a bubble padded jiffy bag and he said he always sent them that way !!! I do think USA sellers need to be more specific and yes VG+ should be nice and clean but a lot of the time it's not. Not too fussed if it's cheaper end I'm trying to fill a box up with, due to the postage on buying only one record I have been surprised that a generic VG on every record has turned up superb unmarked old store stock. One thing for sure with the price of the USPS we pay they shouldn't be scrimping on bloody bags and wonky cardboard. Before long the cost of post from the US will mean it's not worthwhile buying 'stocking fillers' for the collection anyway and those that insist on declaring full value on the customs on higher end stuff, I will not buy from.

In 1975 I bought a Contempo Raries pink label record that I heard playing in a city centre record shop. Deon Jackson - Love Makes The World Go Round was one of the many sounds quenching my musical thirst and opened up a whole new world for me to explore back then. Filed away next to the Carla release for many a year, it's still a 'memory record' favourite of mine - so simple, yet a tune packed with quality all round. RIP Deon

More Ns Tat Or Chance To Attract Younger Souls?
NUFCSOUL replied to Dean's topic in All About the SOUL
A while back I asked a group of young uns about their views on Northern Soul when I saw a couple of them had the Fist/Keep The Faith logo on their shoulder bags and they thought Northern Soul and KTF were bands!!!! from the past. I don't think anyone of these young kids buying the 'latest trend' item shoved in their faces by some ad/pr/brand positioning campaign will suddenly seek out a record player and start collecting original soul vinyl, but if just one does it may just be that they go on and learn about the music. We are all learning about stuff at all stages of our lives. The nation though seems devoid of any dominant youth culture at the moment but has a mish mash of many styles along with a big hint of retro - mods/skins/any era vintage. I'm also not expecting any massive amount of younger people getting into the scene but we must welcome them if they do and if they like wearing 'the gear' then so fkn what. At least they might be up dancing instead of sitting getting pissed and moaning about the scene and how it's not as good as it was back whenever. ''And why do you look at the splinter in your brother’s eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye?'' Matthew 7:1-5 Keep The Faith .... I'm off to buy some Roxy Threads mate!! -
With the greatest of respect - grade of playing surface/label would help and also price is a very good idea along with the actual name of the record and label name. Good luck though!
-
I've really slowed down on ad-hoc buys of lower priced stuff on eBay from the US The charges mean it just isn't worth it at times unless of course you score for a 300 dollar record for a daft 100 dollar bid or similar. It amazes me though on some peoples listings when they have a desirable record up for sale - they are going to make a nice little bonus on a crate or estate find but insist on full declaration and registered cost. I will not buy from any US listing that declares this policy on eBay.

Another iconic soul singer leaves our 'scene' Mary, your music gave all of us so many memories! God bless and RIP

Where Next Musically it said .... so as a record collector who spins a few tunes (like a lot of us) I use the opportunity at the place of my residency. As there's 3 of us we rotate before the main guest and every 3 months and I can't wait for my 8.30 slot as it's a chance to play anything but a classic - as they are called!!! I'm trying to get eyes opened to a period circa 1959 to say mid 60's that gave us hundreds of records that have been played out but never migrated to the big ticket or classic status for whatever reason. Some genres that apply are doo wop/northern, hard soul, r'n'b or whatever else you want to call them but ultimately they are records that progressed into the basis of Northern Soul. Some are even ballads! So I guess they could become 'enders' I consider it nowt more than an underplayed session and yes people do come up and ask what the record was. We are all hearing things we had forgotten about or simply passed by and I defy anyone to say they have heard every 'soul' (whatever genre it belongs to) tune from 1959 to the late sixties. Later on at say the 11 o'clock session I play to the floor/beer intake call it what you will - classics, Motown and well 'known' r'n'b and that is what people are happy with - even the young students that sometimes attend as it's all new to them! Things that have failed though have been funk, non classic modern and too much crossover. If that is just how it is then fine but I guess it is replicated at many events. I went to a well known place in London recently and whilst the night was great and very across the board a session of latino, funky freakbeat stuff killed me off and I just didn't feel compelled to even ask about one with a view to seeking it out so I guess, as many have said previously, it is all down to taste and preference and I buy right across the board every week!! Not rare, big ticket or main hall classics, but current faves - The Paramounts - Under Your Spell 1964 and The Vals - I'm Stepping Out With My Memories 1964 say it all for me and if it's a case of back to the future mode then that's fine by me and maybe that's why we get so excited about unreleased early 60's surfacing. There really is so much more Northern Soul to be played on original vinyl only.

Quality music, quality music and did I say it was quality music!!! Great day with a nice mixture of playing to the floor in the main room but certainly an eclectic mix for the collectors to tune in to in the small room. Great venue and well organised - unfortunately train times meant an early return to the toon but apart from me I ain't ever heard Betty Green played out !! Thanks to the Willinghams for that slice of magical, raw, mid paced, pain drenched piece of soul - you can tell I like it!!! Cheers Tony

Just Because It Goes On Manships Auction
NUFCSOUL replied to Ernie Andrews's topic in Look At Your Box
Yes but we love to see a record in our collection go for decent money and the downside - One you paid decent money for go for a lot less!! I think John has had some fantastic stuff through in the last few weeks - those Shrines were the stuff to dream of and the Gwen Owens...but like you say some other stuff that you think WHAT!!! an auction item NEVER?? Keeps the forums alive eh! Tony -

It's with a heavy heart I make this post. My mate through music, football and the Newcastle taxi trade connections passed away today. Bill's love of soul music and Newcastle United was well known throughout the land. My condolences go out to his family. My respect goes out to yet another soul and football brother, I can no longer have a bit of crack with. I was so priviledged when he asked me to do a set along with Davey and Matty at his birthday party last year. RIP Bill. Record Collections - Sell Now Before The Market Drops
NUFCSOUL replied to MikeHinNewJersey's topic in All About the SOUL
The people with the records will be respected once again and the rest will follow - It will be a funny old world when the digital era crashes!! OVO wil last forever. -
We must all be paranoid I reckon - I've collected records all of my life - well at least since senior school age of about eleven. It is definitely a 'bug' that is hard to cast off. Even if I attend small indie gigs in Newcastle I buy the bands single if they have one on offer - I see it as helping them out as well! I've collected literally allsorts and all genres especially Clash, Bowie, 60's beat/pop, reggae/ska and Soul or as we call it Northern !! I can say I am officially addicted to collecting Northern and our in house joke when the mail arrives is her saying -'not another bloody white promo' Of course it's not to imply I only collect white promos, but you get the drift I hope. I don't sell and have every record I've ever bought. Northern has dragged me into rnb, doo wop and loads of other asects of our scene that I'm quite happy to embrace if it means I can buy another record. NOTE - I only buy it if I like it as well so some of my sets will never contain that so called must have modern piece of shite, cos I don't like it! Sadly the download generation will never get the buzz of seeing a Bell Sound or Sheldon stamp in a run off groove, or a majestic L A Beat issue with such beautiful siver and red it makes you weep. They'll never know who wrote it, played on it or where it came from and they probably don't fkn care as they move onto the next disposable, twenty second thing in their lives. Record buying and selling will never end although I think we can say it has rapidly slowed down due to the corporate environment running the music world, however when the digital armagedon takes place thankfully I'll still be playing my records on proper decks and Dansettes. One last thing and I don't mean to hijack the thread as it's covered loads elsewhere - As a collector it's got to be OVO at events for me!!
-
As long as the fake/reissue/boot or whatever you what to call them records are mixed in with originals then the overall category listing is bollocks. I've always petitioned for separate categories - just as dealers and others selling on here list sometimes as Original / Pressings. How hard would it be to define the search down to say a one called Soul RnB / Northern Originals . Of course it may not stop arseholes posting pressings etc in it but just as on here when something is in the incorrect forum it gets moved . It might be a canny job being a Northern Soul originals record policeman on eBay!!!
-
Hi all Just a couple of things to clarify I met Chris yesterday and bought some originals from him doing a deal that he was prepared to sell at and I was happy to buy at We had a good bit crack about prices, the club in Carlisle he is involved with, sellers/collectors we both knew and general stuff etc etc Very open and honest he gave me gave me his reasons for selling but that's up to him to say not me He did have them on eBay previously but took them down - hence popsike capturing the end price /price when taken off. Says he may list more so as is number is on here if you see something then give him a shout and if his - 'let it go price' - suits then fine If not then fine as well. I'll end with an opinion - they are his records so he can do whatever he wants to sell them or change his mind even and keep them. My dealings with Chris were spot on and I just wanted to say so. Cheers and all the best fellow soul sourcers!!! Tony

Another fine talent departed from our scene. I hope all those guys and girls we admired so much, are having one heck of a dance party. Much Soul Source love, to his family and friends at this time of sadness. RIP Frank Wilson

I lived in a village west of Newcastle and the best I got was a boys club in the next village - turned up there approx 1972/3 in my 14th year and christ what were all these skinheads (lads and lasses) doing dancing in lines to what I found out was The Tams (Hey Girl), Tammi Lynn (Run Away) Chairmen of the Board and of course loads of Motown. They played Jimmy Mack every week - I loved it!!! Brutus check shirts and sta-prest - we thought we were the bees knees but as we all know IT'S WHAT'S IN THE GROOVES THAT COUNTS and that certain beat did it for me!!!.

New List 50 Northern Soul Originals, Mainly Stafford Era
NUFCSOUL replied to Pete S's topic in Record Sales
No Pete - this is total transparent honesty and I don't mean to affect your sales thread. I was stiffed by a dealer on here a couple of weeks back. Wanted an offer so gave him one - not good enough so accepted his! Paid immediately as I usually do and then the arse refunds me next day with a - ''got a better price' story. You can't always be right over a record price or condition for some folk, but proper people on our scene like you are a gem to deal with (send me the fiver later!!!) so credit where it's due as I'm still fuming over my experience. Tony
