Articles: The Post Wigan Years - Northern Soul
Bossfourpart1 replied to Chalky's topic in Front Page News & Articles
A book would be briliant ! Shame a lot of the flyers never had the year printed on them . Guess we never thought it would lead to this level of detail. Is there anyone else out there that would have documented these dates and details ?- 140 comments

Nice one Chalky ,Great to see this detailed captured while our memories are still realiable. There's lots of stuff that went on locally too , (for me) especially in Norwich with the Backstreet soul club (founder ,Mark Chamberlin 1982'ish). Good times , good tunes ,good people !- 140 comments

I've been meaning to post this for some time and have finally got round to it. The Specials - I can't find another - on Satch records Both sides on my copies all have instrumental printed on the bottom of the label which is obviously a mistake as the A side is the vocal. I can only guess that this printing error compromised the success of the release. Does anyone have a copy with the Vocal printed on the bottom of the A side ? Curious to see how many exist of each - one being rearer maybe !! cheers Frank

Dance floor clears ; It happens all the time ! All the venues i've attended over the years have lost the floor at some point. It tends to be a combination many of things that lead to this. Sometimes the dancers are just burnt out from too many fast numbers. Other times poor mix of tunes or something that is new (but still good ). One thing to bear in mind is that the floor could be empty but theres lots of clapping - applauding the tune !!! always a good sign. If you don't know the crowd then it can be tricky, so attend venues before Djing and get to know what they like. I have noticed that people need to consume a few beers first before their legs have sycronised, so the early spots might have an empty floor for a while. People tend to pace themselves too , especialy at allnighters. At one Cleethorpes weekender due to a late license "hick- up" the nighters were shorten by hours. The results was that punters were on the floor in numbers as soon as the music started and danced all the hours available. Great weekender! I guess we must allow for the very bad Dj ,who despite his efforts "is just bad" ..... Keep those dance floors full ! Frank

TWO THINGS THAT ARE KILLING THE SOUL SCENE
Bossfourpart1 replied to Speedlimit's topic in All About the SOUL
It does seem that there are some buyers out there who are cash rich. Perhaps its a case of their mortgages have finally gone and they can now afford the tunes coupled with a poor knowledge of how many copies are out there. Auctions really work well when two people with money chase the same item ! It may end in a high price but that does not mean it is really worth that amount . It just reached it on that day. Prices can goe down too and they may in the future!!! Along with the mortgages, their commitments may have dissapeared too. Free time may now mean people who have been restricted to family life now have the opportunity to venture out again. Unfortunately for those like myself who have been living off the quality sounds through the 80ts to today, I now have to watch the scene slip back 30 years !! There are good venues about but you have to make an effort for them to keep them alive. They will progress but only if we keep attending them. Life line , 100 club , Rugby and a few others to name a few. It is frustrating watching commercials and money minded people milk the scene but then that is nothing new . KTF Frank Norwich -
Had a session on my decks today and decided to play the B-side of the Gillettes ; same identical thing ; J & S records . B-side title ; 24 hours of the day ! nice little tune. If anyone has the facility to upload this please do .(i cannot as i'm at work ! working honestly ) cheers Frank

I remember the 1983 scooter rallie in Morecombe. (Norwich Broadsmen scooter club) The Allnighter was on the Pier. The Pier decking had sections coned off as gaping holes were open to the sea below. We queued along side these gaping holes in the decking waiting to get into the nighter . Great days. regards Frank

Yes i remember Mark , drove there a few times , remember Cobby trying his spinning technic and ending up on his backside while dancing to Billy Hines , Ling Ting Tong , Mick Smith was spinning at the time . Great nighters there. Nearly hit a dog in the high street while driving home after the nighter . Quite a long trip from Norwich . regards Frank

Mr. Nobody tune sounds weak on the vocal and a bit messy on the horns and percussion, a little bit too loose really. It comes across quite annoyingly really but then those tunes tend to latch on some how but would need to be played out alot to achive that. (if you dare !). The Creshendals is a grower !!! Thats worth spinning as it has some catchy "hook" elements that you can listen out for. Just my opinion ! Like the rare compilation , Nurons ,,,,,, Tune! cheers Frank

Racism at NS venues; did/does it happen
Bossfourpart1 replied to Ady Croasdell's topic in All About the SOUL
The Northern soul scene / family seems to get these knocks from individuals with very little to back it up with. Its such an easy going scene that we get the odd character come into it to take advantage of the descent trusting people in it . The number of venues running Northern events each week is vast today , so this Craig C****** comment is pretty vague and might be in reference to two incidents over 40years and involve people who were not Northern soul fans !! , ( if they ever happened). in the past ; I vaguely remember a Northern night near Peterborough where they were mobbed by skinnheads and got "trashed", late 80ts i think. Was anybody there ? As above , during the scooter rallies in the early to mid 80ts ,,i remember the NF being present and trying to recruit and cause unrest in some of the resorts. At a Great Yarmouth Rallie Edwin Star was on stage at Tiffinies ( Allnighter ) in mid song when a Skinnhead walked across the stage infront of him .This caused Edwin to stop singing and approach the Skinhead, saying "hey man nobody walks infront of me on stage while i'm singing" !!! The skinhead just screwed his eyes at him and strolled off !!!! the crowd backed Edwin with cheers and the show was a cracker !!! That Great Yarmouth Scooter rallie allnighter was a mixed music event, ska ,60ts beat , Soul etc. Once i was at the Gaumont in Ipswich watching the style council , Dee Cee Lee was on stage singing when a Skin Head guy shouted some abuse at her ! She finished her act and Mick Talbot got on the mike and said "Some people ought to get their brain in gear before they open their mouth ! " PRICELESS... The guilty party then left ... At all of these events the soul fans in attendance backed the injured party " the Black artists" and i have never seen a racist incident at an event and i have been to alot !!! Bad Press.. My brother-in-law was the drummer in a Skin head band called Vengence, they did a few gigs with Screwdriver another band. They released an album and toured a bit unfortunately the press wrongly associated Vengence with the NF. When he read the false artical in the press he turned around and broke-up the band..... This kind of false reference can be very damaging. Its a shame there isn't some kind of legal body within the Northern soul scene , who could challenge these attacks and protect what is a non racist tolerant scene. regards to all , Frank -
