Billy , you could have asked me at the last Backstreet gig if you could have attended. (you were missed ) I played it in my spot from the original 1966 release . It Went down a storm, great version. The reissue still turns up for sale on ebay or try the next Norwich record fair on the 24th Oct St. Andrews hall. How was the last Stoke gig ? regards Frank

Hi I know of a couple of tracks by ray Williams , one of them is easier to pick up , on ALA records i think and the other is a rarer piece on Space records called " gonna get even " . Also Walter Jackson on Okeh records , where have all the flowers gone . Hope these are of help in your quest. Regards Frank Norwich Backstreet. Billy ( Tony ) ths is your time for recognition and rightly so. No body consciously keeps count of the number of nighters they attend as a "soul fan punter". I am trying to have a ruff guess but it covers too many years. Billy given you live in Norfolk and drive thousands of miles each year for the various nighters with out any political bias is quite something. As Helen mentioned earlier , the journeys and the banter are something to treasure. Lets hope there are alot more years to come . It is easy to be critical of other people when you don't really know them. Try to keep the fuel bills low in the car journeys and leave me some room on the dance floor. Yes thats Ali , he tends to have a pint in his hand as a counterbalance , hence he's abit wobbly. His spinning elbow tends to get higher as the night progresses, so beware. He wasn't quite as lively on the train home after the nighter. Funny , he neglected to mention this self promotion clip . regards Frank

Check your and check out the b side of this record then change the speed. Through out the scene DJs have tweeked the speed up and down on records to compliment the tempo on the dance floor to help with the dancing and with the sound of their set. I think the Falcons , Has it happened to you yet ! on Lupine is certainly one that gets the fine tuning. Not sure how many are aware if this one but I have had this track by Dee Clark on VEE JAY records (also on uk Top Rank)for some 20 years nowand i had played the B-side at 33 rpm as apposed to the 45 rpm (7 inch single). I had covered it up as Johnny Moffet and got quite a bit of interest from the crowd in Norwich and Kevin Featherstone took this idio up north a few years back. The B-side is titled I want to love you and it tends to sit in many a box un noticed so i thought i would prompt a few people on this site to re awaken the track as it isn't half bad. I do believe the recording is actually wrong and done deliberately wrong for the market at the time. Does anybody out there have any other similar tracks or idios regarding the rpm / tempo. Hi PT / MC , Those were the days, i feel the internet is a great way of sharing information quickly but i feel it has good and bad points. Each individual who used to make the effort to go to the gigs will have their own reasons as why it is better or worse now. Personally i liked the effort we used to make to source information on tracks , play lists, cover ups etc and it was worth traveling to hear those rare tracks played from original vinyl (it made them that more desirable). Tape swapping was the only substitute to owning a track (bootlegs were limited). The under ground eliment to the scene gave it a very desirable quality to me and made it more personal. All good things come to an end but in this case it has opened it up internationally which has brought in alot more people and connected with old soulies who live further afield now. Alot of the original vinyl has now been saved due to the internet and put into the hands of the fans ,these pieces may have sat quiet for many more years if not lost all together ,so thats good. Personally i mss the 80'ts "wonder years" but then we couldn't maintain that endless support as inevitably we have other committments too. See you at the Legion Friday night ! cheers Frank

Hi to all, can't hold back any longer, i am after a copy of "So Glad" by Frank Howard and the Commanders on Barry records , I know there were about three different colour barry labels but i'm just after as close as possible to a M- . I heard the track along time ago and now that i have seen the act too , its a must have. Thanks

Hi Billy/Tony , interesting thread. i think quality records whether funk / latin soul / RnB / cross over etc should get played in the main rooms (through out a DJ set). In the 80t's it was the variety that kept the crowd guessing and alive. I believe it has a place, it just depends on how good the DJ is in placing it in the play list. Another room would be diluting down the crowd further. Not too sure how big the funk scene is ? If it brings in some new blood then it could be a good thing. Ironically "Thumbs / Cobby" who is living in Hollywood -L.A. keeps begging to borrow some of my good 6ts soul / Northern for his DJing sets as the funk scene over there has caught onto some of the tempo stuff , linking to its bass line and breaks , so it has started in the reverse over there. cheers Frank

Hi Manship had some LPs at £50 on the Crazy Cajun label , some good tracks on there , one track has a nice cross over feel to it . Does any body know the B-side to "its not the end" on Tear drop, The reason i ask is that i once saw a copy of "soul party" on Tear drop 45rpm (e-bay )and missed it , now i am wondering whether it was the flip ?

Hi , i love the track and while hearing it at different venues ,i have heard introduced as Celeste Hardy on lead vocal... Unfortunately there isn't any hard solid "info" to support this only the detail that Celeste Hardy has a cracking voice too. Good enough for me until the true Artist is unveiled . cheers Frank

Hi Mark, our first and last allnighter (well for a while ). It was a gamble putting on that gig but we felt so strong about the scene and the quality of music at that time it seemed the least we could do. Do you remeber that night when the numbers were still alittle low and we weren't breaking even.You turned to the door staff and said "well if any body turns up just tkae the money and keep it". We turned away and within 5 minutes the door men came running over saying "Oi ! you better come to the door as a coach load pf Soulies have tunred up for the gig ! Naturally the gig was a success , despite the sunlight at 03.45 a.m. I had put up bin bags on the windows but unfortunately the ceiling ones were out of reach and lit the place up . Great times the 80ts . Great Yarmouth weekenders , and all the Northern gigs ...Phew ! Bring it on !!! Cheers Frank
