Hi Everyone, NOW SOLD Got one of these to move on, possibly ! As we all know this is one of the biggest floor fillers around at the moment and seldom shows up for sale. Its in VG+ condition and plays fine without problems. The signatures on the A side are the band members autographs. Running through until Sunday (11th Nov) evening. The smart distinctive bespoke gear I think you are referring to, is the look popularised by Mods in the late 60s and very early seventies and I wouldn’t disagree, it was and is still very classy, with a degree of stylish individuality. By 71 street fashion,had changed,as I mentioned earlier, around this time branded clothing such as Fred Perry, Wrangler, Ben Sherman etc had started to have an influence on what we wore,the emphasis was still on being smart, nothing clown like at all. We were” in with the in crowd” soul music hadn’t yet become “Northern” it was still a secret scene enjoyed by those of us who were lucky enough to go to The Mecca, Torch and (I’m told)the Cats. When Wigan opened in 73, none of my soul friends wore brogues or straight baggy trousers, preferring flares, platforms and penny round collared shirts, a full length, belt waisted leather coat completed the look. To quote Rod Stewart, “my dad said we looked ridiculous” and he was probably right, but we didn’t think so at the time. I disagree with you when you say that by 1978 the whole country was “wearing clobber popularised by soulies” the fact is that fashion at Wigan had, dare I say it, regressed into a similar but scruffier version of what we had been doing 5 years previously, and the disco fashion seen at Blackpool and the Ritz was probably a truer reflection of what was happening nationwide. I really don’t think that the fashion world was taking its lead from what was happening at Station Road around this time. I also don’t think you can generalise that all punks ran a mile if a confrontation was on the agenda, they didn’t and you know they didn’t. The world unfortunately doesn’t stay still and trends in both fashion and music move on,Northern Soul has not been exempted. As a person I don’t like living in the past as I prefer to look to the future and I really can’t understand why anyone would want to wear what they did 45 years ago but it’s a free country and if that’s what floats your boat then great, my dad is still alive and even now, thinks “ I look ridiculous”

It seemed normal in the 70s to see .hundreds of teenagers wearing a kind of Northern Soul uniform, but seeing OAPs reviving the trend is OTT for me. ............................................. This was a casino thing, prior to 1973 you couldn’t really tell a soul boy or girl from any other cool dude. Yes back in 71 main stream fashion in the North meant we were wearing Two tone suits, brogues, parallels, Ben Sherman’s, Fred Perry shirts etc but really by the time Wigan opened, the look that became the “Northern Soul Uniform” was out of fashion. Badges, beer towels, training shoes etc really didn’t do anything to enhance the look and just made you an easy target for a bag search by the local DS, or a fight with a punk rocker. It wasn’t a great look back then,so to see some balding bloke in his mid fifties dressed in bags, braces checked shirts and an Harrington in 2018 is something I don’t understand.

As previously mentioned in this thread, as a new release this was played several times at the Torch, it was not considered to be "divvy" by anyone that I knew. I doubt that Mitch Ryder would have been considered "divvy" at the Wheel ,The Shakers, "Out on the Floor" and the Tramps were certainly not considered as such at the Mecca. With regard to John Miles I never heard it played anywhere so I cant comment. I suspect that you are basing your comments on what was happening in the youth clubs circa 74/75, where re releases of the afore mentioned tunes would have been easy to acquire and therefore considered to be a bit cheesy by true aficionados such as yourself. A lot of records can be added to the list, obvious ones being the Invitations classic ….Skiing in the Snow, Millie Jacksons A Man like Me, The Devonnes, April Stevens, Bobby Hebb, Bobby Paris etc etc The scene has constantly moved on, which is the reason it survives, however, I can't condone the ridiculing as "Divvy" tunes that are an important part of our heritage. I’ve just posted a comment on the discogs release page regarding this. The sleave notes clearly state :- members of New Sound (singular) are etc etc I doubt you will get them to change it though. Funny bunch on discogs, I once had a long running disagreement with some Swedish Goth collector over the originality of NS record ( can’t remember which one)he was demandingto know how I knew it was a bootleg. when I got fed up with him and replied “because it has Simon Sussans fingerprints on it” he got very shitty and threatened to ban me from the site.

The 7” is a different mix ( not a good one imho)

Test pressing for £15 VG + looks like its worth a punt to me.

Great record in its day but sounds very dated now, imho. First played to my knowledge circa 1972 Highland Room by Tony Jebb. On the night he also played in the same set, again for the first time,The Isleys - Tell me it’s just a rumour You need to bare in mind that at this time hardly any Tamla / Motown Records ever got played on the emerging Northern Scene. Anyhow,Tell me etc caused that much positive interest that when it finished he (Tony Jebb) picked the arm up and returned it to the run in, saying something like “this is so good I’m gonna play it again” Magic moment that I will never forget.

That will be the reason its cat number is HRH 1...........................I'm easily confused these days Good price and also great B side by Tommy Hunt (not on the Kent)

Depends on the record in question, e.g Hoagy Lands - Next in Line -Stateside demos are far more common than the withdrawn issue.
