Firstly, Teds well being and safety are the most important thing here, as such I send Ted my best wishes and a speedy recovery from what must have been an horrendous experience. The worrying thing about this incident is that whichever angle you look at it from, it all leads back to someone who, knows the scene & knows Ted's collection. I doubt very much that it was organised yesterday at the gig but more than likely planned over a few weeks, therefore I think the perpetrator or perpetrators, know exactly where and how to move them on. The risks taken in obtaining the records would surely indicate that the motive is for financial gain. Although anyone with an understanding of the scene must know they cant be sold as a collection in an open market. If they are going into a private collection what's the point ? they can never be shown to anyone and they cant be played out. The idea mooted by a previous poster about offering a reward for "safe return" is all well and good but it puts every collection and Dj in the country in jeopardy. I know there is never ever such thing as a victimless crime, but it really takes a special kind of low life to steal or harm someone from your own community and I hope that they are caught quickly and dealt with severely. Simplest way :- Place a record mat on the turntable. Put a UK 45 with a solid centre on the deck then drawer a line in felt tip pen around the circumference of the record. Place your off centre record so the edges align with the line on your mat. Job done, works every time. JF

I never knew Smokie back in the day ,but when I moved to the Midlands in 94 our paths crossed and it soon emerged in conversation that we also shared a passion for Rugby League. He used to tell me about his time living in St Helens, telling me that he had played a few amateur games with Thatto Heath and he was genuinely interested to talk about my days playing with Shevy Sharks. We always ended up talking about music though and his love for the modern side of things, one of his favourite tunes was Michael Whycoffes "Looking up to You" which he always asked me to play. I'm pleased to have known one of the scenes biggest characters, a lovely man, a tough man, and above all, an honest man. RIP my friend, you always made me laugh when ever we met, but today "I'll be Looking up to You" with a tear in my eye. God Bless x

You had it easy in Cheshire ! we used to dream of being working class in Wigan. When I were a lad, my dad used to have to pay the mill owner sixpence a day to work in't weaving sheds and if he was lucky get 10mins break in a sixteen hour shift for his bred & dripping.

So by your definition Joe 90 and Hawaii 50 , to name just two are part of Northern Soul musical genre ? It's all subjective, the goal post are constantly changing with the passage of time.

I think that a lot of the issues that are being raised in this thread are time related. When Dave Godin coined the phrase "Northern Soul" it was his way of describing a sub genre of the UK soul scene occurring at that moment in time. I don't think he ever intended it to be used to categorise a music style. Between 1969 and 1973 there where only a few venues in the UK that played this type of up tempo music. Once the Wheel had closed, Blackpool Mecca, The Torch and The Catacombs' would be the only places were you could hear this type of sound. The attendees of these small exclusive venues would in the main be from northern and midland based towns. Fact is, not many locals knew or cared about what was happening musically on their doorstep. I grew up in Wigan and around 1971 there would have been no more than 20 regular Wiganers in the Highland room, with probably a similar amount from towns based geographically within a 40 mile radius. Apart from Dave Rivers I didn't know of anyone from south of Wolverhampton who was into it at all. By the time the Casino had become established the scene was changing rapidly and as more and more got into it, the catchment area grew nationally, if Dave Godin had only got involved during this period I don't believe he would have ever used the term Northern Soul. The scene today, as we all know is so diverse musically the phrase N S is still relevant but it only describes a tiny historical segment of a much bigger story. Good luck with the dissertation.

After we called time on our nights at Stafford Rangers, I used to meet him and Gaz Duncan for a drink in Perkins club every Monday night. Shute always had a tale or two to tell, and he had a great sense of humour...........one night he comes in with a face like thunder and says he's just run into the back of a car, which it turns out was being driven by a dwarf. Shute asks him if he's ok and the little fellows replies that he's not happy ....... with a stupid grin on his face Shute then says he asked him "well if your not happy, which one are you" ?
