Well here's my twopence worth , I like what I like and used to be very narrow minded to the point
of when I was in my teens wouldn't buy a record if it were by a white artist! (does that make me racist even though I'm white )
but getting back to the question , my son George is 21 and loves a lot of the old 'Top 500' sounds , in fact one of his favourites
is Sam Dees - Lonely for you baby (bit funky ?) and the likes of Al Green - keep on pushing love. We've had Funky Northern for a bloody long time and some I like and some I don't. Surely the likes of LOU PRIDE , JAMES LEWIS, BOBBY FRANKLIN, WORLD COLUMN, BLACK NASTY, EDDIE PARKER (Body Chains) etc. are funky sounds that are classics and have filled the floor at a 'Northern' do?
I really think it very difficult to label any sort of soul (Read the Crossover thread!!!) but at the end of the day if the beat is right people will dance and if it aint they wont .
Cheers
Swifty
p.s. I love a few tracks by SLAVE that would fill any dance floor
