He to buy the Vilebrequin shorts himself though Apparently Berry Gordy very generously gave him a t-shirt from the Museumshop in return.

Saw her in Blackpool to and again a few weeks ago at the Jazz Cafe in Camden, where she mentioned that Blackpool gig. It obviously meant a lot to her do that show at that time .As I remember Rudy Robinson was due to back her, but he sadly died a few weeks prior. Her autobiography A woman Like Me is well worth reading but not for the faint hearted

The Wheel And Late 60S Proto Northern Soul Scenes
nsoul2 replied to Ady Croasdell's topic in All About the SOUL
The club was La Duce in D'Arbley Street, off Poland Street opened in 1964. It is sometimes referred to as the gay version of The Scene Club, although the crowd was not exclusively gay.. The music was on a juke box and all soul and ska and bluebeat to. and unlicenced as far as i can remember. It carried on into the later sixties You still got guys in smart 3 button suits down there at that time. It attracted a gay skin crowd but after it closed , they moved to the Dorian Club in Chelsea. at the far end of the Kings Road. I remember hearing the Temptations Cloud 9 down at the Dorian for the first time I'm sure that they. had a dj rather a juke box but it was all soul and reggae .Also bumping into the girlfriend of a guy I worked with , who happened to be with her girl friend that night. -
You can register with The -Saleroom and bid live online, or just view the catalogue. I use The-Saleroom for buying stuff at auctions and its good, but you have to register a debit card to participate. This is the first time that I have seen a complete soul collection sold through an auction room.

I understand that the plans for the redevelopment of London Road Fire Station have fallen through and may be now subject to a compulsory purchase order. This would be the ideal location for such a museum within any redvelopment, Whitworth Street being bookended by 2 iconic clubs, The Twisted Wheel and the Hacienda, and various other venues in between over the years. It could overcome the problems that Urbis had by building a permanent collection and perhaps including some sort of live venue. There is now a window of oportunity to acquire artefacts and stories from the musicians, club owners , promoters and fans of the past 50 years whilst they are still with us..

This is the dominant style again at many nighters / weekenders. It still looks good when you past 50 and beyond. Over the past few years I've noticed more of the ladies wearing 60s style shift dresses, which again are classic and comfortable . Its a smart scene. For example at Wellingborough on Saturday or Bridlington weekender, shorts were worn in the day, but when the guys come back later for the evening sessions they had mostly changed into trousers or jeans. Its not compulsory .We all take it for granted, but go to other sorts of events and see what people find acceptable to wear when going out ,even a wedding reception.

I used to go to Cheapos then on to Contempo for current imports to. Was never expecting or really looking for rare northern dancers, but Cheapos always had a lot of the vocal groups I liked The Manhattans,Persuaders, Temprees etc and Stax/Volt releases. There were plenty of mid tempo dancers, overlooked at the time but in demand now as already mentioned Think they got a bit of aggro from another stallholder about jungle music . My memory of Contempo is up a flight of stairs, a small room with a hatch, No record racks out. Think all the new arrivals where written up on the wall. Think I probably got my first Millie Jackson there to. Used to get a lot Westbound stuff and sure Betty Davis stuff to. Cant think where else I could have got that. Was it only Saturday mornings? Was living in London then and have no memory of going other days even though I was working in the west end. Think that was the buzz, going on the Saturday to see what was in that week., Used to listen to American forces radio from GermanyThey had a late night show you could pick up in London, and used to get Billboard every week to see what was in the R & B charts stateside. That knowledge helped at Contempo.

There must be some interior shots . The ceiling was always being photographed. I think it was a pub popular with theatricals ,, hence the posters. Peter Street was the centre of Manchester theatreland so it would be a convenient watering hole.

The 100 Club gig is being streamed live via the Converse Represent face book page, for anybody who cant make a concert or just wants to see them playing in such a great club.

Johnny Roadhouse was born in Sheffield but the family moved to Manchester when he was a child.
-
Johnny Roadhouse was a Manchester legend, died April 2009 aged 88. A saxophonist with swing and dance bands. The shop opened in 1955 on Oxford Road and is still run by his son . Generations of manchester bands were supplied by the store from the early beat boom to the likes Oasis. As for a soul connection, it is limited. There are a couple of mentions in Central 1179. I used to pop in in the early 70s to look through second hand records . It probably would be the place to visit for any band performing at the Wheel or in the city, who needed equipment, repairs etc. It is a indication of the respect in which he was held that national newspapers like the Daily Telegraph and Independent published obituaries.

According to the website Place Northwest, the intention is now to commence work on the site for Motel One in the first quarter of 2013. Anybody know how to put the link up? That does not mean that they may try to buy up the remaining leases and clear the site earlier. Do the leases expire 31st December? It would be great if there was a chance of staying open until the end of January 2013. January 27th will be 50 years since the official opening of the Brazennose Street Wheel, and January 27 th 2013 will be a Sunday.
