  1. Right, I've read through it now - what a bastard awful, nasty thread.
  2. Someone wrote he 'saw an opportunity' (KR) - no - he didn't - he had the passion to put his opinions in print - don't, stupidly, have a go - have the wherewithall to put yours in print too if you want to argue with a bloke who put his money and his mouth where his soul is (shite analogy I know). f*** me, if you put in, you should be allowed to earn a bob down the line from it too. I'm a fucking (happy) no mark on this scene - I'll always try to express my feelings, yes - but I hope I never go down the route that this thread and some of its posters have.
  3. I've got about 12 posts down on this thread and its posts.....and have physically had to stop reading it...Paul S....mate.... really???
  4. Ste....you were right.
  5. Every dj that made it to the stage of being able to hold court for an hour at a nighter had attained status, one way or another. So their view, and record choices must be deemed relevant on this scene. Times change, and in the mid 70's things were right for the dancefloor - to newer ears, they may not be now, but, hey, lighten up. For it to be played and accepted on the floor, surely must prove that whatever particular track you want to pick on...was and is - Northen Soul. Anything that got played at a nighter for any length of time and was danced to surely - IS - Northern Soul - be it Hawaii Five O. Afternoon Of The Rhino, Condition Red etc etc. I haven't heard a record, really, at a nighter, that I hold in my memory (and why certain instrumentals are deemed ok and others not, I don't know? - as that is what seems to be the issue here) that I am not happy to hold there.
  6. The beauty of todays scene, what with the internet and all - the information that is at hand (It can't be deemed a bad thing obviously)....or the graft that was involved learning your trade on yesterdays scene? I read the posts on this board and although I have a solid grounding on tracks that I heard in my time, I'm amazed at the amount of stuff I don't know. Sometimes though I wonder about hearing and obtaining stuff outside of the all nighter environment, dance floor side - the nitty gritty to me - does that make it a different thing?
  7. Do the stickers still not carry the 'Gift' tick box?
  8. Someone just lost the Bernie Williams at the death for the sake of £20 - £1345 - Ouch!!
  9. Jackey Beavers - £1380.99
  10. Cecil Washington - £1029.99
  11. Like I knew it would, even though I stupidly hoped against hope, my heartfelt and hopeful £750 bid has just been blown out - I hate not being rich!
  12. Another Brian Rae ender at Wigan Maximes early 80's....just heart wrenching.
  13. Love it, like the majority that will bother to post on this thread, I was a kid and it is locked into my childhood memories - listening to it now, it sounds so French/Belgian/European - think Channel 4's 'Eurotrash' or the 'Lounge' comps that Dimitri From Paris' has done. I'll possibly make a public faux pas here, but thinking of 'Casino Classic' released instrumentals, I still come over all young when I hear Ron Grainers 'When Love Grows Cold'.
  14. You can't get a print from Ikea for £15.00 quid - nice lot.
  15. Remember all the hullabaloo about who the 'Sisters Three' were in Blackbeat before it was uncovered? Was it Mari Wilson or Yvonne Baker and someone, I forget - oh, the conversation that cover ups spawn, you can't beat it.
  16. "...and When he's not arou-ou-ound, what would I dooo?" Christ, I love that song! I'll have a stab at the break on a keyboard... "Da da der der der, der der da da DA DA! - how will I know if he loves me, when I never see him, nooo" Robin, stop it!
  17. Thanks for that Rob. That was all I needed. (....talks to missus behind him.... "In a minute love!")
  18. I was in the bath tonight, having a Wigan moment (I know), and I got to thinking of the last few seconds of a track being faded out and people applauding. I thought why did I/do I/we do that? Yes, obviously, cos I love the track in question - but I thought a proportion of my applause may have been given to the jock for playing it - sure! Also maybe cos at that moment, I was applauding cos I was dead happy - I'm here, with you (maybe I was applauding me, my state of mind, possibly?)....and dead happy . Then I thought, was I applauding the people, my kin, you and I, on the dancefloor at that moment? Or was I just applauding the beauty of my/our scene - cos it's obviously Ace! Do you know what I mean though? There's so much held within those applause that we give following a track. Should I go to bed?
  19. I put Rahaan (BTH) on in Warrington last month and laid it on him, which I shouldn't have as we should have been going down the House route - but you do don't you, Billy Nichols, Leon Thomas, King Tutt, Larry Wedgeworth, Bileo, Frankie Crocker, Al Mason, She Devil, Blacksmoke, Jackey Beavers, Herbie Mann, Jewel, Wiili J & Co etc - he fucking loved hearing them, he didn't know them but he loved them, respect. I do fall in to this trap often but I remember the only US ('House' DJ, the pigeon hole actually demeans him as he is a Hispanic male with a massive musical history...and 54) bloke to catch me out was Hippie Torrales (Zanzibar/Turntable Orchestra) who buried me with stuff we know from the Northern scene [but he grew up with] at an after party. Yet again, I'm pissed, apologies to the board, just thought it may be interesting.
  20. I'm out four nights a week, playing everything from Northern to House and apart from one track, I play vinyl - it's a novelty these days, given, but I do think it has a reassuring effect on people. I have a Pioneer CDJ for the only reason that certain things aren't pressed on vinyl - but it chauves me to use it - I actively dislike the process. The Pioneer has been the biggest single factor in reducing the quality of people playing on the House scene, if only for the fact that you could have yer Mam beat matching in 10 minutes on it (the youngsters benchmark of how 'good' a player you are), not relevant really on the Northern scene I know. But I do think it access to scenes with the tools (Cd recorded tracks that are 'obtained') and not the nous (history & passion) radically waters quality down. I Want To Be A Celebrity Get Me A CDJ.
  21. All the best Peter.
  22. One of me mates has just got back from Las Vegas, and alongside 'The Temps' were The Platters and The Coasters - how are the last two for original members? Nice touch though, when the concert ended the group members all congregated on the door and shook everyones hand on the way out.
  23. You only do it once.
  24. Not really my fault Ian - it was my young second in command, Aaron, who used to work for me in the shop who bore the brunt of my ire. Oh how I larfed.
