  1. Is this the first time in NS history that the 'Nighter' scene hasn't jumped on the opportunity to re-brand itself, or certain sounds played within it at least? Is the reason that it hasn't (maybe), because it cannot? The 'rare soul' comment I responded to above holds some weight with me; as regards todays scene that is. Would the loss of the term 'Northern Soul' lessen the current scene's impact to the outside world? After all, history is bunk; true? Surely ridding the world of the term 'Northern Soul' is unthinkable to some degree!? Or is it?
  2. Good point - although it seems to me that a lot of people are happy saying that they are part of the 'Northern Soul' scene to 'excluded others' - as the normal world can associate with the term. Does the term 'Rare Soul Scene' have the same appeal when it comes to bragging rights?
  3. So we should all call tambourines summat else then? I believe they were named so in another time sphere - but they are still called tambourines!!?? Of course Four Below Zero is a 70's production - as it was produced in the 70's, well-spotted, I'm sure some people missed that.
  4. A term quoted at a particular time on the scene that encapsulated and deliniated certain records. Can we now please put to bed these ridiculous and pointless personal excursions re the term 'Modern Soul - Ford Cortina's were so named in the 70's, and strangely are still named so....that statement makes sense to me, so I'll leave it right there.
  5. You know what I despair sometimes.
  6. I don't really understand that statement - it's an open forum, where views are laid down, no wrongs really. And as for the 'self promotion' line....like it would make any odds on here. Ian, I think you are a belting bloke - fancy a pint?
  7. ...and stop forcing your 'font' on me.
  8. The more I read it.... So you would find it okay for the Del Larks to play to a NS audience at a mainly money making international excursion for Soulies that could afford it? As opposed to Ian giving old men and women some respect and money back by involving them with his ideals. It should all be about respect, which I feel his artists have been given. Cash in pocket for doing something that they love doing (even if it did not particularly fall into your given ideal), a tad of hope and continued involvement when others had given up on them. Are my views idealistic? Maybe...but it reads right, for those forgotten artists, to me.
  9. May I add that simply playing down your own understanding of music and it's intricacies, which I guess makes you a 'purist' (you have now inadvertantly involved yourself - you've pigeon holed yourself) does not make your point any more valid. It's all about the music is it? Look deeper - you need to to - as things aren't that simple.
  10. That is such a great piece of message board nonsense - you may one day, hopefully, realise it too. You have just managed to force your view down his neck as much as you say he has, his. Quo vadis.
  11. Don't you just love insights like this!? And by the way.... OUCH!! That opening line still does the trick. (Please resist the urge to drag those [funny] Carstairs piccies being destroyed under a Hovver etc out son!)
  12. I guess I should have taken more time with my query but I do sometimes get some stick about the length of my posts. Sometimes 'weak' works, yes, what I suppose I was trying to get across is that some of the 'newly played' stuff I hear, that goes for money, seems lazy in approach, almost one-take stuff (which again, on occassion works). There is always material overlooked that will eventually come to the fore but does the need for dj's to break a new track maybe lead to pleasant and ultimately 'acceptable' - but maybe sub standard (whatever that is?) - dancefloor product getting air and subsequent message board time? I know that reads like a crock - do your best.
  13. Some favourable points there James (Sharon Jones and your views on a possible s/t)). Nice, untarnished, post.
  14. A badly thought out slur love! (Just like my use of the word 'love', love!)
  15. Good response mate.
  16. Michael!!! Ha ha!! I'm not highly intellectual, you have simply just given me your view on how you regard me - thanks anyhow. Have a little respect mate, you should know me better - all I do here is pose questions, all answers are to be read and taken for what they are. Love you - love to Mum and Big Dave anyhow. x
  17. Thanks for clearing that barn-storming revelation up.
  18. And that is what makes this 15 page strong thread all the funnier. It got me that hot under my 'off-me-tits' collar last night that I rang Keb in The Phillipines (his views always grounds me) and spoke the biggest pile of hard-to-follow shite as regards to this thread that you could imagine. This thread has revealed some for where they are, brought out some insane deluded views, made me feel a whole lot less psychotic and kept me (and no doubt many others) entertained....so....on the back of that, I suppose it's a belting thread. Long live NS!!
  19. We all have had to deal with it. Certain peer pressure is positive, other peer pressure is negative - all part of the learning curve, yes? But does this not prove that at any given time, commercialism prevails? Is 'peer pressure' simply another term for 'what I should [as my peers tell me] be into right now'? The scene has been pushed into certain area's by the movers and shakers, for whatever reason, and the flotsam and jetsom (like me) have had to roll with it - as our voice at the time wasn't deemed loud enough. Right? (Don't worry, I'm off to bed now.)
  20. Could you, hand on heart, state that Northern is all? Does admitting that you would rather hear Frank Wilson for the 7000th time, when something other could be played (I know the argument, yes, 'It should be something other that fits my bill and not something from another sphere') - but in variably, couldn't it be some other quality production that takes that 3/4 minute slot? Or would this bring about the downfall of the scene? Thinking about it, the scenes politics are almost racist. Discuss.
  21. Bob on. Ta
  22. Last I heard he was a teacher???? Anyone?
  23. Have people picked the wheat from the chaff these days and have the quality picks prevailed?
  24. Nice info, cheers. Though I can't picture Chuck Jackson sticking a pen into someones face, can you?
  25. This sentence has kept me up at nights Ste, sorry to re-visit it, as I find it odd. My response is...."And?" How am I to react to it?
