  1. That Lenny Welch's bird picked a fine time, didn't she?
  2. He also vowed to 'keep some fine rags on her back!' - but did he, did he?
  3. Well spotted fella.
  4. God no Peter. I think you are doing a sterling job of tracking down a possibly lost moment in time mate - and nice for me that I remember that moment. Keep at it mate.
  5. I stand corrected (maybe).
  6. I'm just struggling with the Scottish flag bit - my spot at Wigan, under the staircase on the right hand side put me right underneath where it was hung, so I'm opting out now, I've put my two penneth in and I'll leave it to the real investigators.

  8. L.J. Johnson - I loved it.
  9. Have I read this thread correctly or am I just going off on one?
  10. As I said earlier, I always had it in my mind that the banner was aimed at Richard not Sam as it, in my mind, was thrown over the balcony just before Richard came on. I remember it to be '81, which if it was, would prove it.
  11. The track knitted in quite well at the time as a lot of Modern stuff being played was from major labels, albums as well as 12" and was played at Leicester, Hinckley, Rotherham etc by many different jocks. It was a floor-filler.
  12. Aaaaaah, so the Scottish flag was just there to throw us off the scent that night then was it Steve? Got ya!!
  13. As far as I remember it seemed to be more aimed at Richard than Sam, as I remember the (Scots?) lads that unveiled it over the balcony did so at the beginning of Searlings set about 2-3am.
  14. I've just placed a post on the 'Casanova' thread about the particular night this banner was hurled over the balcony - the banner was basically a Scottish flag with lettering stitched over it. So start with the Scots lads.
  15. I was there that night, Searling came on, looked at the banner (the lettering was over a Scottish flag) which was hung over the balcony to his left and before playing his opening track, said: "The only good thing about that banner is that it's in Spurs colours."
  16. Thanks for the pm with Phils number - I think I woke him up in Spain.
  17. Easy answer Baz - you never came (due to work no doubt) to 'On Hubert Street!' did you - we were all there, educated and proud. Even Brian (Rae) came fairly regularly mate, where were you? Some great responses there Bazza and thank you for them. I am sometimes mistaken for taking the p*ss, an incorrect view in reality, I try to keep it real that's all. I don't think you've sussed me Bazza, re my posts, I only have a certain amount of time that I can give to the SS forum - enjoy it while you can. Love ya my mentor.
  18. I think you'll know that Hott Waxx had a part in that story too Paul, before Kev and Terry fell out that is. On a lighter note we took Johhny and Lamaar on a barge down Wigan Pier one evening, I can't remember why now, we were trying to get Pete to showcase 'Come To Me' on a 'Hitman & Her' (weird, but publicity is publicity innit?) at the time. Lamaar (in his charming NY pimp-mode), loved it - Johnny on the other hand f*cking hated it.
  19. That's that sorted then. Next!
  20. Everything else in your post is your opinion and that's that really but is there any need for the above comment? So by your view, if you pop round another Soulies house for a brew and they stick your brew on a Mel Britt coaster then they obviously appreciate soul music less than yourself?
  21. My point exactly Malcolm. Yesterday we had 'slightly salted' Anchor and today we have 'Utterly Butterly'. At the end of the day, it all makes yer bread moist dunnit?
  22. Bazza, you know that you had no need to state the above, of course there's no hard and fast rule - but - how do I, the uninitiated, gleen from the board what is being currently played on the scene under the guise of 'Modern'? As it happens, as I would have expected, you alone have answered my question by giving me titles - a correct and singular response to my question. (At this point I must bring to the attention of the board that Bazza was my mentor, he was the dj when I wore bobble hats to his Disco in 1977!) Nice to see Marc Evans and Jazmina etc, alongside the other titles...but I do find that sound kind of formulaic, and a tad repetetive these days. No denying the pleasure I get from these tracks, they are quality...but you know!? Have Modern Rooms suffered due to 'the core' graduating to the general ('more exciting') House scene (all the lads that I know from the Nighter scene that I grew up on have), also is trad MS still played over more 'Housey' new releases these days? I'm not saying that the scene is playing catch up - but I think that to a degree certain people playing records to that crowd at all nighter level maybe!? I, in my exile, cannot believe that anyone could fail to keep a dancefloor happy with the gammut of fantastic 'MODERN' (I'll not explain it again) records that are out there. Yourself excepted, you pioneer you!! Has Modern Soul and it's subsequent dancefloor space suffered at the hands of House Music and a changing, younger crowd, who (it strikes me anyhow), at all nighter level, are more interested in a retro sound? Ps Is the reason why 'Modern' was called 'Modern' too hard for people to grasp - really?
  23. Christ! It takes some when Rog has to answer a very f*cking obvious question for me. Why would 4BZ be termed a 'Modern' sound?
