  1. HI MACE, Whatever happened to peace and goodwill to all men?. ROY
  2. HI STEVE, A happy new year to you too Steve. Good to see the Central still going strong and getting the plaudits it deserves. Refreshing to have a venue free of politics with just decent music and a good time at the top of the agenda. All the best ROY
  3. HI STEVE, I did and thoroughly enjoyed the read. Did not bother too much with soul events post 1982, due to full on commitment to home and family life, and was very intrigued and enlightened by Chalk's brief but detailed descriptions of events and the characters/dj's that have contributed to the soul scene of today. A big part of soul history that I have never experienced or had little knowledge of, so put me down for the full rendition when Chalky decides to write the book.
  4. HI CHALKY, Who is the author/collaborator of the rule book?. Is it available on e-bay( at a totally inflated price of course ). ROY
  5. HI MARTYN, The simple answer to this one is that it is dependant on the type of night you like to visit. If you visit the northern soul nights, dayers , weekenders that are dominated by the northern soul classics, then for me it is a dance scene. People who like to frequent these venues do so predominantly with the intent on dancing the time away. If it is the rare/underplayed or crossover/70s nights then for me it is a soul scene as again people in attendance tend to go for the soulful content of the music on offer and occasionally venture on to the dancefloor. Although it is not always 100% soul on offer. To sum up its a bit like HULL Black or White!. Oops sorry Martyn Black or RED!! ROY
  6. HI CHALKY, I agree in principal with your sentiments on this issue. A charity event advertised as such should be promoted by people who are registered and the only way to know exactly how much is raised at the event is for the said promoters to give figures of attendance, income from other avenues on the day and any incurred deductions which leaves a final figure for all to see. A letter of thanks from the charity for which the event is being staged is most welcome but that will only give a figure of what the promoter hands over!. The honesty of anyone promoting a charity event is paramount and some "charity" events leave a lot to be desired. Many registered charities do incur expenses and as such the directors of that charity are entitled by law to deduct a percentage( I believe 10%) of the income to cover costs. Is therefore safe to assume that not every charity event hands over all the monies raised from an event. Charitable events are a different animal however. These are usually promoted as such where the promoter makes a donation to his/her particular choice of charity from an event they have organised in the charities name. No doubt there will be the usual deductions to cover any costs. regards ROY
  7. HI RUSS, Did not mean to infer that you may have thought the guy was smug. It was just my expectation of someone who has records on show merely to promote his own ego!. ROY
  8. HI, I too did the same by looking through the record box in question. The gentleman in question was definitely of European origin and not English. Some of the tunes he had behind the cardboard divider were exceptional original vinyl releases, some from the so called top 500 and others a little less well known but quite highly regarded. He politely informed any one who asked that the only records that were for sale were the ones at the front of the box. I did not detect an air of smugness in his manner and felt he was quite pleasant. Still don't know why he had his dj box mixed with a small batch of sales to the front!!!!!! ROY
  9. The can of worms gets opened yet again!!!!!!!!!! 494 replies and then some still to come. ROY
  10. Mike, Back in the day of the original allnighters I believe the accepted norm as a finishing time was 8am.Nowadays finishing between 6-8am is the standard. I don't know what the accepted start time was as hitching down to the Torch from Leeds when the M62 finished at Salford could take anything from 3 to 4 and a half hours, but always was under the impression they started around 11pm. As someone said earlier that all nighters was a young mans forte and these days we are all feeling our age so not many last past 4-30am. Mini nighters should be 9/10pm through to 4am. Times for soul nights are just a lottery imho. ROY
  11. HI BOB, What record is tempting you to sell these three?. Must be a good one as its gonna cost you £750+. I wont tell Ann if you don't.lol ROY
  12. This thread is terrible!!!!!!! But I might just have to get out the needle and thread and sow my sides back together as they keep splitting with laughter at the ingenuity of some of the members offerings on the subject. ROY
  13. Are you making the above assumptions based on your experience and knowledge of the dj,s and venues concerned, if so...... The third sentence of your statement is wrong again Chalky! ROY
  14. Nice review and track listing, but how much and where, when available. ROY
  15. Got to disagree. I made no assumption that the dj's had influence on the evolving scene. I stated as the dj's did not resemble "mods" in either dress or music taste, the assumption would be that mods were not responsible for the northern scene as we know it from the early 70s onward. As for the dj being "a spotty, swotty nerdy anorack of no status" try telling that one to Richard Searling or Soul Sam!!!!! LOL roy
  16. From what i remember of my early years of following mod/soul culture i would say a big NO. The mods of the mid to late 60s definatly had their roots musically in mid tempo soul/r&b and pop but not northern/rare soul as we all came to know of the early 70s. Got to admit they were hugely influential in its gradual development due to the ever increasing demand for new sounds to replace much of the pop dross of the early 70s. Really can't recall many of the dj's from the Wheel,Torch etc regarding themselves as Mods and therefore being responsible for the evolution of Northern soul. All IMHO. REGARDS roy
  17. I have about 84 or so Scootering magazines all in excellent condition. These are from year 2000/1 through to about 2007/8. These are free to anyone who wants them and can collect. I live in leeds close to motorway network. Call if interested on 07968174085. regards ROY
  18. HI CHALKY, Highlighted in red. Any promoter has the right at anytime to change the date, venue and any other aspect of the event they are staging. It might not be the done thing but never the less they have the right!. This topic of date clashes wether all nighter or club nights has been discussed numerous times on soulsource and you have contributed comments to it on many occasions. I cant understand why the poster is asking this question yet again unless just to cause mischief and sh*t stirring between promotors. ROY
  19. I bought one from Dave Raistrick at Skeggy earlier this year on Gordy 7". I know it is on one of the Temps cd's so maybe could be an album release also?. ROY
  20. COURSE IT DOES. LOL
  21. Thanks for the reply. Already used Soulsource links to find a few sounds that i liked. As for E-bay, even using some of their filters does not drasticly reduce the amount of dross you have to trawl through to find some fair, slightly lower priced, original releases. I suppose i will just have to follow in yours, and many others, footsteps by doing the long, hard legwork so to speak. regards ROY
  22. HI ALL, Decided to start buying a few records again, nothing expensive, and thought i would try E-Bay.com(USA). Trawled through 100 pages starting with lowest price listed first and to my suprise about 90% of the items listed were from uk sellers. What was more galling, that most of these on offer were pressings, boots, reissues and some recent releases. Tried the opposite search of most expensive first and again most records on offer were from uk sellers but thankfully original US releases, but way out of my price league. Obviously E-Bay are doing nothing regarding selling of dubious records and sellers of such boots etc are on the increase. Sellers of these items are also getting pretty adept at concealing their true origin. SO what if E-Bay accepted that they will never persue the bootleggers, willingly or otherwise, and just create divisions within their sub headings for sellers of original first releases and those selling "re-releases". I know many will groan at this suggestion but something needs to be done!. Ill get me tin helmet ROY
  23. You got it in one!!!! And Tribute does get a play AFTER the official finish time of 1am. A little bit of dance and fun for those attendees who want it at the end of the evening.
  24. A hint of reverse psycology, would the rare and underplayed brigade accept them as undiscovered sounds???. ROY
