  1. Whether they were referred to stompers at the time I cannot remember, but Torch sounds such as Sam & Kitty, Little Richard and Rufus Lumley certainly fit the bill. I agree with Ian & Rick about the Cleethorpes Pier bouncing to So Is The Sun, Ton Of Dynamite, The Champion amongst many others. Steve
  2. My introduction into the scene was in 1968 when I was regular at a club playing rare soul/motown records. The main DJ (Fred Benson) nearly always finished off with It's So Hard Being a Loser, I Want To Go Back There Again and I'm Gonna Miss You. California Soul maybe not,but the likes of Chris Clark set me off on a musical trail that included Blackpool, Wigan and Cleethorpes and some of the best days/nights of my life. Steve
  3. Always liked the Buckingham's-Susan, Don't You Care and their best known pop record A Kind Of A Drag. Also like the Walker Brothers-Baby You Don't Have To Tell Me and most things by Gary Puckett and the Union Gap especially Over You. When I was young and attending soul nights in the football capital (Scunthorpe), John Miles-One Minute Every Hour,Graham Bonney-Super Girl and Steam-Na Na Hey etc were often played as were many Four Seasons records. Steve
  4. Had the October issue delivered last midweek, but still waiting for the March and April ones which I left emails and messages with Mike Ritson about.I did manage to contact Paul at Manifesto and since May all the issues have arrived at the beginning of the month. Steve
  5. The first time I went to Wigan, The Tomangoe's- I really Love You was belting out as I walked from the car park to the entrance. My first memories of the Casino and a record I would consider an anthem. Other records not mentioned so far I believe: Freddie Chevez- They'll Never Know Why, Al Wilson- Help Me Jodi Mathis- Don't You Care Anymore Jeanette Williams- All Of A Sudden Johnny Caswell- You Don't Love Me Anymore Steve
  6. I purchased this and Motown Memories vol 1 for about a quid each brand new from a shop in Scunthorpe about 1970. I was always playing Ghost In My House and You're Gonna Love My Baby at our local youth club, but not on dance nights owing to more common Motown stuff being played. Still got these LP's along with Breakout-Mitch Ryder,Rare Stamps-Barnes and Mancha and The Fabulous Impressions also purchased from there along with Uptight where the opening track Love A Go Go was very popular at that time and not on a single as far as I know but I am sure I could be corrected! Steve
  7. Seem to recall seeing Edwin Starr there, not sure whether 1974 or 1975.
  8. That's me shot down in flames again, memory is as bad as I thought
  9. ot home Not home at present but I have a red cover Contours LP but unsure whether on MFP or Starline. I think Baby Hit and Run is the last track on side one, and I think I bought this for BHAR before the single was available.Other tracks include Misunderstanding and Hard Been A Loser. From memory I think an Isleys LP with Tell Me It's Just A Rumour Baby came out about the same time but that memory fades with old father time. Steve
  10. I bought Chubby Checkers- At The Discotheque on BJD early 70's -not sure if this was anything to do with Soul Sounds or Simon Soussan. Was Baby Reconsider one of the very earliest bootlegs to be made? Steve
  11. Hi Ian, Have you ever worked with Fantastic Johnny C ?.I use to love- Don't Depend On Me. I believe you've worked with Garland Green but have you done anything with- Sending My Best Wishes?. Also love the Freda Payne-Memories & Souvenirs track (from I Tunes). Steve
  12. Thanks for that and I look forward to hearing this if someone can do a soundclip. Steve
  13. You are right sir and I am wrong .I do have the record by Laura Greene and not Freda Payne. I have not heard the Freda Payne version. Excuse my error,I should be concentrating more instead of trying to combine this with work.I blame Ian for giving us this infectious thread.
  14. Got the capital import somewhere at home, had this since the Mecca days. Was it ever played there? I also bought quite a few current Mecca releases at a market stall just up from the South Pier. Better leave the soundclip to the experts. Steve
  15. Got good version By Roy Hamilton and also the Bobby Womack one
  16. Bobby Womack - Harry Hippie- Always been my favourite slow record Others include: ZZ Hill - This Time They Told The Truth Millie Jackson - I Just Can't Stand It Teddy Pendergrass - The Whole Town's Laughing At Me Four Tops- Ask The Lonely
  17. Leave enough money behind the bar for us if you are spinning the discs when we get there.
  18. Hi Ian, During a football visit to Rotterdam in 1991, I came across 5 of your Motor City CD's for about a tenner. Two quid each, what a bargain I thought to quote your earlier comment. To be honest, and having bought your Mecca then Record Shack material, I thought most of the tracks were too similar in terms of backing tracks, but two tracks really stood out for me: This Man Needs You- CP Spencer and the excellent Technicolour- Billy Griffin which had a different( Marvin Gaye?) style to the other tracks. Did you have any continental chart/dancefloor success with the Billy Griffin track?. Steve
  19. Just been listening to Steve Woomble as a guest on Radio Hullberside during their Blackburn v Grimsby score updates. The Kings Go Forth record was played, which although I have not warmed to this yet and in my opinion does not hold a candle to most records played at the Mecca (And Cleethorpes),this will be already be played alongside some of Levine's own productions, northern and modern songs at venues such as Hull Soul Club which has a great ATB policy and usually a busy dance floor.
  20. Hi Ian, Don't know if this has been asked earlier but what was the first record to be covered up at the Mecca. During my first ever visit I can recall the Coasters and Edie Walker but suspect there were many before them. Best regards Steve
  21. Assuming you mean non Motown-The Isley's-I Hear A Symphony being one of the best examples of other Motown versions of their songs,I have always liked Vanilla Fudge's rock version of You Keep Me Hanging On.
  22. What should have been said to the Athletes before they went there. Come On Train-Don Thomas
  23. I'm Losing Again-Ray Agee
