The Dramatics were the same group, and I had bought Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get and In The Rain before ever hearing Inky Winky Wang Dang Do. I, like a number of the older people on here would be subscribing to Blues & Soul by 1970, and as well watching the rare soul scene develop, was also buying new releases having read reviews in the magazine. As well as the Dramatics, others that spring to mind in the early 70's that I bought include: Luther Ingram-If Loving You Is Wrong Chi-Lites- Give More Power To The People Millie Jackson - Ask Me What You Want Stylistics- Stop,Look & Listen Al Wilson- Show & Tell Skylark-Wildflower Main Ingredient - Everybody Play's The Fool Bloodstone - Natural High Bobby Womack- Harry Hippie Tower Of Power- So Very Hard To Go Harold Melvin - I Miss You Invictus and Hot Wax releases- Honey Cone,Chairmen,8th Day and Freda Payne etc. With the exception of Skylark, who I cannot remember anything about, I have continued collecting other material by these artists plus many other 70's ones before, during and after the Blackpool, Wigan and Cleethorpe's Northern days, so rather than be dismissive, or overlook some of these artists who went on to major chart success, I consider myself lucky to be able to listen to such a fantastic array of music talent, and also be part of the Northern/Modern scene ( Although less frequent than the 70's). Hi Tony, I purchased the Stylistics debut album back 1n 1971 and with tracks like- You're A Big Girl Now, Point Of No Return,Stop,Look & Listen, You Are Everything and Betcha By Golly Wow, I was taken back by the quality of the group and followed them for years, witnessing a great show at Manchester about 1976. A year letter having got the Chi-Lites-Have You Seen Her single, I bought the A Lonely Man album which contained the fantastic The Coldest Days Of My Life track as well as Oh Girl, Living In The Footsteps Of Another Man, Inner City Blues and A Lonely Man ( A lot like Have You Seen Her). I saw this great group at the Nottingham Palais supported by Sweet Sensation (Remember them ?) who were quite good although not in the same league as Eugene Record & Co. Why people dismiss these is beyond me, because beneath the hits and covered hits which always seem to crop up at this romantic ? time of year, are other class soul records some of which I have already mentioned. Whether Earth, Wind & Fire come under this category I do not Know, But their albums That's The Way Of The World and Gratitude spawned some brilliant tracks-Sing A Song, Devotion, Reasons, That's The Way Of The World and Shining Star to name some and I was not put off once they achieved commercial success. £97.30 + P & P for new. Gone up somewhat since I was showing interest. You are right Sean there are some great tracks on it. At the time I chose to buy the Spinners- Chrome Collection Book/Box set instead and I would recommend this one too. Thanks Steve
-
Thanks for that. I can remember the boxed set being talked about and went on the net to search for it, but did not think it was that far back. Time flies ! Steve

Hi Ian, A couple of year ago a box set including some unreleased stuff came out in the USA.I think it was available on import for about £50. I am assuming this was the box set Plumby was referring to. I loved it too as I do all of the Four Tops output. Steve

Just heard a Four Tops version of the Magnificent's My Heart Is Calling You, on The Eddy Edmondson Solar Radio Show. I gather it was unreleased and appeared on a Four Tops CD Box set a couple of years ago. Am I correct in saying it was written by Frank Wilson and Billy Gordon ? and are there any other Motown versions ? Steve

Hi Kev, Glanford Park is the home of Scunthorpe United, who just happen to be playing your lot in a relegation battle next Wednesday. Thanks for the answer on the book. Steve
-
To me last year during the 50th celebrations may have sounded a good idea, but would it have lost sales owing to the amount of other 50th stuff being issued ? I will buy one whenever Kev, and if you do not mind me asking, what basis has been used to place titles in order? and are unreleased tracks included ? Looking forward to a good read. Will you be at Glanford Park next Wednesday?. I am looking back over my shoulder at the moment. Steve

Was very good Alan, on a fly drive holiday and only there for three nights. Could not believe my luck when I saw his name in neon lights on the strip. Of his solo stuff The Whole Town's Laughing At Me has always been a favourite but been playing I Just Called To Say a lot recently. Steve
-
Collected his solo albums when he left Harold Melvin and was lucky to see him In Las Vegas ( supported by Stephanie Mills ) in 1981. One of the greatest singers ever and such a tragic loss especially at an early age. Thanks for the great memories and rest in peace Teddy. Steve

Cannot agree more Mark, but has certainly filled some floors in some of the ATB venues I have attended. Steve

Ace Spectrum was my suggestion and should have read Don't Send Nobody Else. The Don't Send Me Away was a Garfield Fleming moment ( another good sound) following a few beers after the mighty Iron thrashed Derby. Does not look like Jean Carn's- If You Wanna Go Back got a mention which has been very popular, and regarding blue eyed soul, was not Lisa Stansfield's - 8-3-1 very popular a few years ago. Steve
-
Keep on going Simon, a great thread. Whilst I do not consider these records anywhere near anthem status as some listed on this thread, I think they have proved popular on dance floors and are all more modern in terms of release. Shine- Luther Vandross Lord- Alexander O'neil Mercy- Duffy. And an oldie I forget last night- It's Hard Sometimes- Frankie Knuckles Steve

Had both this LP and I'm On My Way since first hearing This Time Baby at a Miami Beach Disco whilst on holiday in 1979. Great track called Walk Away From Love on the With Your Love LP. I can remember hearing HEART BE STILL at the Mecca and going out and buying her Make Me Feel Like A Woman LP for the track. Does Heart Be Still get played anywhere now ? Great singer. Steve

Hi Steve, I have known Rick for about forty years and I doubt whether I would have heard of half the records that I know had it not been for the DJ work he has done in the Scunthorpe area and spending a lot of time listening to his advice and records. My musical tastes have never always been restricted to just Soul music, and whilst I appreciate this is very much a site for Soul people,it is good to learn from people like Rick among many other knowledgeable people on here, of other artists interests and roots linked to Soul music. A happy new year to you,the better half, Rick and everyone else who contributes to making this a wonderful site. Steve Thompson

I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself - Cissy Houston
scunnyjack replied to Ian Dewhirst's topic in All About the SOUL
First came across the record back in 1972 on an LP called Chess/Janus Mobile Disco. Actually bought the LP for A Love Reputation, In Orbit and The Entertainer, but was knocked out by this track, which at the time must have been the first song that I had heard by Cissy. Seasons greetings and keep up the great posts in 2010. Steve -
Bought this on Spanish Polydor in Lloret De Mar following heavy disco play back in 1972 and not played it much since so will dig it out. Agree about the flip. One I do keep digging out this time of the year is. The O'Jay's- Christmas Just Ain't Christmas (Without the one you love) which bounces along in typical philly fashion. Steve
