  1. 1. Do I Love You 2. The Right Track 3. Out On The Floor. Steve
  2. Ethiopians - Hong Kong Flu and Train To Skaville, not heard them for a very long time. These along with Symarip, Skatalites among others started to be played at our local Scunny soul nights, and whilst there were not many skinheads in our town, I went to see Junior Walker at the Attic (late 60's/early 70's ) and there was a huge presence there. I was too busy listening to rare soul stuff new to my ears to take notice of quantity of reggae played. I dare say that a number of the same skinheads ( Donny boot boys ) chased me away from Belle Vue around that time as well. I was actually banned from playing Max Romeo;s Wet Dream at my local youth club because our leader got wind it was banned by the BBC. Judge Dread didn't go down well either. Steve
  3. I started buying the Mag about the same time, and would be still doing so now had it not been for not receiving issues, then when eventually getting hold of someone to talk to ( no response to emails ), still not resolving the problem. Ironically when my last subscription was due a mag appeared with a reminder form. Steve Not
  4. Cat still attends the odd night in Scunthorpe and often see her at Scunny games. Known her for years but still don't know her real name. She's not that scary, very pleasant in fact. Great days at the Pier/ Winter Gardens Steve
  5. Seen Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes without Teddy Pendergrass, and Teddy in 1981 as a solo artist. Would have loved to have seen them together before Teddy left. Detroit Spinners before 1977 when Philippe Wynne left. Jackie Wilson, The Beatles Steve
  6. During my school days, Scunthorpe United signed a striker called Jack Hutton. He couldn't hit a barn door from 6 yards away and every time I played football, I had the same problem and ended up getting stuck with the nickname Jack by my school mates, which spread further afield via my youth club days etc. Majority of people call me Steve or Thommo now, but on the soul scene, I have always been known as Jack from Scunthorpe, and with the town becoming a great place for music - Ashby Mill Road Club and Scunthorpe Baths to name two brilliant venues, Sunnyjack will still do..
  7. I bought a Beach compilation LP while in the States in 1983,knowing very little about the scene. Ian Levine played one of the tracks - Robert John-Who Could Ever Believe it, in his Solar show earlier today. Other tracks include : Robert John- If You Don't Want My Love Spellbinders - We're Acting Like Lovers Major Lance - Everybody Loves A Good Time / Gonna Get Married / Mama Didn't Know The Tymes - People / The Love That You're Looking For Billy Butler - Nevertheless / I'm Just A Man Spiral Staircase,Essence,Wild Cherry, Tyrone Davis, Jimmy Hall and Tina Charles ( I'll Go where the music takes me ) Otis Leavill - Right Back In Time Tower Of Power - You Ought To Be in Heaven / And You Know It Then in 1986, I heard the Tams - Nothing Like Shaggin' in Grand Canary and ordered the US import LP. The single release in 1987 made number 21 in the UK charts. The CD's Mick is talking about are also on Amazon ) About 20 volumes. 18 has Kurt Harris, Mill Evans, and Admiral Ice alone which have featured on our dance floors. Harry Deal - I Still Love You is on Vol 1. A different version of Just Because by Pure Blend is on another one. Also Chairmen Of the Boards - Bless Your Heart is worth checking out. Steve
  8. Yvonne is the title of the B side to Jerry Williams- If You Ask Me
  9. Further to the post,Bobby was the original member real name Robert Dickey who left in the early 70's Steve

  11. Don't know if this has been mentioned on SS, but having had an email from a friend saying he had passed away, I looked on a site WN music which states he died (no cause given ) in Tallahasse, Florida on 29th December aged 72.More very sad news. Steve Added by site Sad news clip from an news article on allvoices website http://www.allvoices...ckey-dies?61208 A native of Tallahassee, Dickey got his musical start at the Red Bird CafÃÆ’© in the Frenchtown area of Tallahassee. But it was an accidental meeting that launched Dickey's professional career. One night at a club in Midway (a small town outside of Tallahassee), the band's - the Dothan Sextet - guitar player quite and Dickey filled in. During his career Dickey shared the stage with Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Curtis Mayfield, Tyrone Davis, Jimmy Reed, Mighty Sam, and James Brown. As a member of James and Bobby Purify, Dickey performed at the Apollo theatre in Harlem. In a tail that is retold all too often, Dickey never saw the money the duo made; when Dickey asked the manage about the money, the manager had no answer. It was then that he left pop music and returned home to Tallahassee. clip from wikipedia on Bobby Purify ( was three over time in total) http://en.wikipedia....26_Bobby_Purify James Lee Purify was born on May 12, 1944, in Pensacola, Florida. "Bobby Purify" was actually two different singers. The first was James's cousin, Robert Lee Dickey (born September 2, 1939, Tallahassee, Florida), who adopted the Purify name for performing, and sang on their early records. The second Bobby was vocalist Ben Moore, who replaced Dickey in 1971 when Dickey suffered health problems. This duo recorded the remake of "I'm Your Puppet," which become a small hit in the U.K. and the Netherlands. clips from a great extensive article on The B side website http://redkelly.blog...asons-bell.html Back in Pensacola, Mighty Sam took Papa Don to a joint called Tom's Tavern to see an Alabama group he had performed with off and on, The Dothan Sextet. Tearing into high energy covers of the latest soul hits, they just brought down the house. Schroeder was once again enthralled with the voices of both their lead singer, James Purify, and their guitar player, Robert Dickey. Empowered by his new deal with Bell, he arranged for them to accompany him back to Fame, where he planned on producing sides on both of them.
  12. Another case of postcode lottery. Mine are still awaiting dispatch according to Amazon. Not coming on Friday ( at the Scunny allnighter ) so happy new year to yourself, family and all at Hull Soul Club. Same to Ian and look forward to more great releases in the new year. Steve
  13. Thanks for the excellent and informative reply Ian. I dare say the box set will be a must buy. Steve
  14. Will be buying some of these and the Philly ones. I notice Anthony White was not on the shortlist of future projects. Is there any chance of his PIR/ Salsoul stuff coming out?. I notice Hey Baby on one of the Philly CD's, but if I am right this is not on his PIR album. Best regards and thanks for the great albums put out this year. Steve
  15. Having subscribed to this mag since the early days, through not receiving copies and getting no response from emails, I eventually gave up the ghost in June this year. Great read but questionable service. Started with Blues & Soul in 1970 ending well into the 80's,also collecting Black Music,Black Echoes, Togetherness and Soul Underground. Also bought copies of Soul Up North and In The Basement occasionally. With the exception of Black Echoes I still have the others bought. Subscribed to NME for many years as well. Steve
  16. Was playing his Sweet,Sweet Love just before I read this. Do not know if this gets played much but been a fave of mine for years. Steve
  17. Oldies Unlimited ?, I think mainly mail order, but I called in one Saturday morning and could not actually browse, but instead looked at lists then placed an order. Must have been 20-30 year ago I bet. Steve
  18. Thanks Pete, Also recommended having seen it in HMV, only got as far as Billy Bragg in Liverpool, so hope it is better than your judgement. The nearest I ever got to Welshpool was that one in Telford on route to a footy match in Shrewsbury, so not guilty of beating you to any records from there. Steve
  19. Had 10-15 tapes that I had done on my sneaked in Hitachi recorder to Blackpool and Cleethorpes ( Including the very first Pier night ). I made the enormous mistake of throwing away many cassettes including these when given a Company Car with a CD player in.
  20. Will watch later today Ian. Don't know if you or anyone else has read it, but I am starting to read a book called Last Shop Standing ( Whatever Happened To Record Shops ? ) by Graham Jones. Seems a great read with many past and still present vinyl shops mentioned or listed, including one which was very close to my heart in Scunny- Record Village. Was always going there at one time, and use to travel to ones in Donny, Hull, York, Lincoln, Nottingham, sheffield, etc on a regular basis. Internet okay for ordering but not the same as being there. Regards Steve
  21. Not actually on the waterfront, but on a road high up overlooking a smaller beach than the main one. You go down some steps to it so I dare it is the same place. The House of Illusion was next door but this has since moved. I think the owner of the Happy Drinker also owns the Red Lion which is a very popular bar on the main drag.Been to a lot of places in Spain and the Canaries but very much like Salou Brian, hope you did Steve
  22. For anyone going to Salou on the Costa Dorada, there is a bar called THE HAPPY DRINKER. Although I never met him, I think this is owned by a guy from the Leeds area who was very much on the scene in the 70's. There is a big sign outside saying Keep The Faith and advertising the bar as a Northern/motown bar. They do good butties. I know someone who stumbled across it in 2005 so has been there awhile. I tended to go early (family ) for quizzes and listen the music which was mostly off CD's and well known northern/motown. The last time we went was this May, and they were due to run two nights a week remembering all the major venues including the Cats and Torch, from June onwards when the resort got busier. Steve
  23. 7th February 1975 The first Cleethorpes Pier All-Nighter 3rd February 2007 The final All-Dayer before the demolition of Cleethorpes Winter Gardens The first a momentous occasion, the second a truly fantastic night to mark the end of an era, and as much as I enjoyed the Casino and Mecca, Cleethorpes Pier and Winter Gardens were my favourite venues, and for that I cannot thank Colin and Mary Chapman enough for making this all happen, and Payo deserves a thank you for bringing everyone together including Colin and Mary for that final all dayer. Steve
  24. Bought this and Philly Regrooved 2 off the shelves at HMV Scunny last Saturday and busy wading through the 5 hours worth in the car to work etc. Like you say an excellent compilation. For those wanting further info on the label as well as Ian's knowledge, there is an excellent write up, listing and interview with one of the founders Ken Cayre on www.disco-disco.com/labels/salsoul.shtml Steve
  25. Sherry's- Put Your Loving Arms Around Me Little Joe Cook - I'm Falling In Love With You Baby JJ Barnes - Sweet Sherry Edwin Starr - Has It Happened To You Steve
