Got home and played them all through. Excellent sound, feel and presentation. The correct singles were in the box, and were even in the same order as their write-ups on the sleeve notes. Thanks to everyone who posted about this set being released, very happy with mine! Some years back(2002) I bought a set of 5 boxed singles in New York, at Restoration Hardware, called "Motown & More". Weirdly, along with Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell ('Ain't nothing like the real thing' and 'Give a little love'); The Spinners ('It's a shame' and 'Together we can make such sweet music'); Diana Ross and The Supremes ('You keep me hangin' on' and Remove this doubt'); and The Temptations ('My girl' and '(Talking 'bout) Nobody but my baby'), the 5th single is James Brown!

Apparently mine arrived yesterday but I'm away til Friday so looking forward to seeing the pack and having a listen.

'Paris Blues' by Tony Middleton and 'I go to pieces' by Gerri Grainger both put me right back to visits to Wigan and the early sessions before the nighters, lots of space. Haven't been to Rugby for ages but Brown Sugar The game is over' and Eddie Holman 'Hold me in your arms' put me there. And The Bamboos as Banbury Soul Club's ender is a given. Sean

Used to like going up to the all dayers too. Pretty sure it was where I first heard Soul Sam playing Billy Nichols 'Diamond Ring', and first listened to Skip Mahoney and the Casuals 'Janice'. Bought Jimmy Jones 'Ain't nothing wrong makin' love the first night' on a tip from a friend, still a great track. I do remember the jazz funk room too, as mentioned above, awesome dancing and very intense atmosphere.

Sad to hear. Instant urge to dance to this record, but it's a very accurate measure of how much older I am than when I first heard it!

Enjoyed it. I'm sure we'll all have parts of it we wish had been different but overall it felt like a good niche programme. Left out a lot obviously, maybe 100 Club being a very big one. But all credit to our Mr Mason, good moves, if he's not even been to a soul night for 30 or so years. Great to see at least a few moments of the Wigan Young Souls too, some great dancing there. And the clips integrated from the film, Northern Soul, look very promising.....

Strange feeling of excitement waiting to watch it. Takes me back to sitting down to watch This is England when it was broadcast. Not sure if that's a good thing or not.

I think for me the error in Paul's article on the BBC site is that the scene is referred to as the first youth sub-culture that was focused on the past. Yes I know Wigan ran oldies nighters (used to enjoy them and learn from them as a newbie at the time), but there was, and still is, an insatiable taste for new discoveries. The fact that virtually all of them are from the past isn't the issue, it's about the music, the feel, the soul, and the discovery.

Caught the broadcast by accident, driving up to leamington for the record fair on Saturday. It didn't really need to have such a focus on Wigan and would have been improved by more about Japan, which it was supposedly about. Maybe it would have made sense to also refer to the interest in Northern in other countries as well.

Great double header 7". A side on British Kudu, 1977, was "Could heaven ever be like this" and B side "Turn this mutha out". Both excellent. What I love about records like these was that despite being into Northern at the time you couldn't miss the quality and excitement of the music. So you bought it and kept it. Same with stuff like Jazz Funk at Birmingham Locarno, Reggae, you name it. If it's great music you hang on to it, and often you get that sense that it could work in a venue aimed at Northern if dropped into a varied set.

Peerless. Having said that, I've found lots of other compilation labels bringing sounds to me that I didn't know or own as well. One of the reasons tape swapping was so brilliant back in the day.

Hi Mike, Just to note that Banbury has its own distinct areas of deprivation, though not perhaps an overall statement applying to the town as a whole. 3 of the electoral wards are assessed as being in the highest 10% of deprived areas in the whole country. Like parts of Oxford, London, and lots of places around the country, these can sit by side with wealthier areas, and even within those wards there will be plenty of people who might be surprised to be described as 'deprived'. I don't mean to say this to take away from the difficulties of Easington (oddly enough the name of one of the other electoral wards in Banbury!), but just to say that while Banbury is a great place and has a successful soul club about to hit the 10th anniversary, it's not the image of leafy rich Oxfordshire and Cotswolds that some might think. Good work from Julie at Saturday's event, looked like it could go either way and things did seem to settle down. Seems that a polite word works wonders at various evenings. Sean

Bobby Womack is due on the West Holts stage at 9.30pm. Just listened to John Humphries interviewing Mick Jagger on Radio 4; sounded good, should be a great show tonight for everyone who's there.

My sister finally got me into the Stones, definitely some great music, but if they were up against Bobby Womack on different stages at the same time it would be Womack every time for me.

Heard on the radio and confirmed in Radio Times that Bobby Womack is performing at Glastonbury on Sunday. We've been pestering our niece to make sure to see him as she's there for the weekend. Be great if he got on stage with the Stones and performed "It's all over now" on Saturday! Sorry if anyone's posted about this, had a look around and couldn't see any threads.
