  1. I've found this thread fascinating - thanks for starting it Scotters and to everyone who's contributed. I was particularly taken by the Colemine record by Jr Thomas and the Volcanos (What a shame) and got it in the post today from Rook Records. Can I just ask where you all tend to shop for yours, if you have any sellers you'd recommend who are likely to stock a reasonable range as shown in this thread, and ideally who would have samples to listen to?
  2. My first visit to New York staying with my cousin in East Village on 2nd Avenue. This was Summer 2002, and a couple of blocks up from her was a record and vintage shop called Wowsville. Browsing the racks the first record I came across was Alfie Davison 'Love is a serious business' - all of $1. The guys running the shop put on very enjoyable soul and '60s nights not far away on Avenue A, mainly aimed at the retro scene as opposed to full on Northern.
  3. And on the flip side of course - Raindeer Walk:
  4. Got this in the post a couple of days ago from a friend who always compiles Christmas themed CDs; this time he's brought the occasional Soul related tracks he's put on them all into one useful CD!
  5. Rubberband man I thought.
  6. My cousin just told me about this showing at the ICA 8 - 14 December: Sidemen. Looks a lot like '20 Feet from Stardom' and 'Standing in the Shadows'.
  7. Gordon Bennett. Skimmed through the comments and I thought maybe it was a bit of a harsh reaction, but then I went back and watched the trailer/clip that started the thread. other than their use of the two words, "Northern" and "Soul" I cannot for the life of me see what the connection with our scene is.
  8. Banbury Soul Club ender tends to up the ante rather than ease you out... But in a way, it's all about the tradition isn't it? Slow, Big City, Jamaican, R&B, Funk, I'm just listing now; basically there's some great music out there, and we can all widen our interests through the focus of Northern Soul. That's why I love Northern - because there are times when you just can't explain to someone what Northern Soul is!
  9. Thanks for this Mike, a great artist and good to hear he got a grammy too. I like that lyric they quote: One day you’ll wake up To a world of regret All the things you can’t remember I’m still trying to forget
  10. Cheers for this, not a bad collection at all!
  11. My copy has the FP 411B on the side labelled 'The Cat Walk' along with the Bell Sound stamp, the B is not crossed out. The track is the same one that Rick Cooper posted with the jingling bells in the opening. On the Kent CD 'Fatback's Soul Shop', the 2nd track is titled 'The Cat Walk' and is the same track with the jingling bells in the opening.
  12. Just received mine today. Very nicely presented and the fold out 'sleeve notes' are a great addition. What I wasn't expecting was the poster that came with the box set - thanks very much guys! I know the tracks are known but it's a very good drawing together of some very good music. The download link worked a treat too.
  13. Thanks for posting Steve. I take John's point but happy enough with this and I've placed an order.
  14. I only caught the last part of this first episode but it looks great. I'm looking forward to the next ones and hope to record the series when it comes by again.

Ease Your Mind, V Lounge, Banbury May 2017

New Sunday Soul afternoon event playing modern soul, jazz and generally aiming for a laid back session of great music in Banbury at the V Lounge.
  16. From the album: Ease Your Mind, V Lounge, Banbury May 2017

DJ area set up at top end of the main dining room on the higher level, but with a large courtyard with lots of seating and good weather the crowd were all outside.
  17. From the album: Ease Your Mind, V Lounge, Banbury May 2017

The old days of chin-stroking have given way to apps like Sound Hound and Shazam.
  18. From the album: Ease Your Mind, V Lounge, Banbury May 2017

Get the dates in your diary and make sure to arrive for the start, good variety of music and all quite different between the DJs.

They picked a great sunny day for the first of the new monthly events.
  20. Totally agree, 'There You Are' is a great track. Not sure if things changed on release for the issue in the States, but on the demo I have it's the flip (again) to 'Bad Risk'. UK and USA both from 1976. 'House for Sale' has always had a place in my heart from when I lived in Deptford in the early '80s and got burgled. Sods took my music centre (remember those?) and stupidly I'd left my UK copy of 'House for Sale' on the deck, but even worse, a tape from Wigan. The insurance people were remarkably generous on the record but felt that the tape had no value whatsoever.
  21. Interesting thread, sorry to head off the main point of the single, just thought some people might like to see the video with Keb, and I presume Sue, in short clips within the overall video:
  22. Very late reply - sorry, I didn't realise there'd been any comments on the photos! I was living in Woolwich and Deptford between 1981 and 1984, and I think this would have been around '83 but I'm not certain. I used to really like the venue at Notre Dame and helped out with playing some records at the very start before most people arrived. I didn't get to La Beat Route more than once or twice though I think.
  23. Oops- many thanks for the correction!
