  1. Excellent opening sets by the Witney guys, and thanks for posting the list above John. Attendance was very good and a great atmosphere developed from the off. Hoping we can keep going at the Labour Club, the space works well for a soul night, plenty of room to dance and the circular tables make it a bit easier to get to the dance floor when you want to as well as being more sociable.
  2. Soulful Kinda Biscuits posted this on Youtube:
  3. Just going with the title of the thread: Diamond-hard vinyl A neighbour with an unknown stock of 45's in the attic All the time in the world to just listen to this stuff I've got now, let alone what I might find next.
  4. The book itself was definitely an interesting read, but maybe like me you prefer the physical item to the virtual.
  5. Loved Notre Dame, as you say, great venue and it felt like a weird secret, bang in the middle of London.
  6. The sister also sent this to me...
  7. My sister emailed this to me a while back...

    Fred Bridges RIP

Sorry to read of his passing, I was another of the lucky ones to see them perform in Coventry and I am indebted to all you people posting on this (and so many other threads re so much more); I had no idea he had been so much of a part of sounds I've loved for so long. I'm guessing Rob Moss's upcoming release of 3 records links around these connections.
  9. Great thanks Rob, looking forward to these.
  10. Bit more info Rob please - when are these coming out?

    Discatron Revisited!

This sounds like a great project. Given you're updating the technology could you incorporate Bluetooth so that the user can just hear the sound via Bluetooth headphones? Lots of settings where no matter how good the speakers are, us oldies with failing hearing might struggle to hear the record!

    Rick Hall R I P

Heard the news driving back from Wales this afternoon. Radio 4's 6pm news broadcast; very decent coverage for a great man who gave us so much wonderful music.
  13. I've found this thread fascinating - thanks for starting it Scotters and to everyone who's contributed. I was particularly taken by the Colemine record by Jr Thomas and the Volcanos (What a shame) and got it in the post today from Rook Records. Can I just ask where you all tend to shop for yours, if you have any sellers you'd recommend who are likely to stock a reasonable range as shown in this thread, and ideally who would have samples to listen to?
  14. My first visit to New York staying with my cousin in East Village on 2nd Avenue. This was Summer 2002, and a couple of blocks up from her was a record and vintage shop called Wowsville. Browsing the racks the first record I came across was Alfie Davison 'Love is a serious business' - all of $1. The guys running the shop put on very enjoyable soul and '60s nights not far away on Avenue A, mainly aimed at the retro scene as opposed to full on Northern.
  15. And on the flip side of course - Raindeer Walk:
  16. Got this in the post a couple of days ago from a friend who always compiles Christmas themed CDs; this time he's brought the occasional Soul related tracks he's put on them all into one useful CD!
  17. Rubberband man I thought.
  18. My cousin just told me about this showing at the ICA 8 - 14 December: Sidemen. Looks a lot like '20 Feet from Stardom' and 'Standing in the Shadows'.
  19. Gordon Bennett. Skimmed through the comments and I thought maybe it was a bit of a harsh reaction, but then I went back and watched the trailer/clip that started the thread. other than their use of the two words, "Northern" and "Soul" I cannot for the life of me see what the connection with our scene is.
  20. Banbury Soul Club ender tends to up the ante rather than ease you out... But in a way, it's all about the tradition isn't it? Slow, Big City, Jamaican, R&B, Funk, I'm just listing now; basically there's some great music out there, and we can all widen our interests through the focus of Northern Soul. That's why I love Northern - because there are times when you just can't explain to someone what Northern Soul is!
  21. Thanks for this Mike, a great artist and good to hear he got a grammy too. I like that lyric they quote: One day you’ll wake up To a world of regret All the things you can’t remember I’m still trying to forget
  22. Cheers for this, not a bad collection at all!
  23. My copy has the FP 411B on the side labelled 'The Cat Walk' along with the Bell Sound stamp, the B is not crossed out. The track is the same one that Rick Cooper posted with the jingling bells in the opening. On the Kent CD 'Fatback's Soul Shop', the 2nd track is titled 'The Cat Walk' and is the same track with the jingling bells in the opening.
  24. Just received mine today. Very nicely presented and the fold out 'sleeve notes' are a great addition. What I wasn't expecting was the poster that came with the box set - thanks very much guys! I know the tracks are known but it's a very good drawing together of some very good music. The download link worked a treat too.
