  1. Some photos here from quite a few years back, but a few shops (like The Thing in Greenpoint) that might still give a flavour of ones that have stayed put: Have a great trip! Not sure why the links don't show correctly but they do seem to work if you click on the box with the question mark in it. In order, they are of these albums on Flickr: NYC Records and shops April 2010 Greenpoint Brooklyn NYC record shops Easter 2008 New York Records October 2007 New York Soul Easter 2006
  2. I've just posted in the 'New Releases' thread that mine arrived today. Great stuff Sean!
  3. I can see why you'd say that Joe, but having bought the LP when it came out while only having been getting into the scene for a year or two, this was an inspiring eclectic mix that expanded my horizons (thankfully). As Ian's notes indicate, the focus was "dedicated to the real thing", and although I loved and still enjoy lots of pop stuff that was part of what got played at many venues, I suspect this was a timely jolt for those of us who might so easily have overlooked the depths of quality and history that really underpinned the music we were hearing. The breadth of music that can get a hearing at soul events nowadays seems astonishing, and I think that projects like this album and input from many pioneering individuals and clubs before and since have kept this alive and continuing to thrive for pretty much 55 / 60 years now!
  4. Arrived today. Both sides sound great. Sam's voiceover towards the end of 'What's it gonna be' comes in rather loudly and then the whole track fades out to end, but it doesn't detract from a superb tune (well, two of course) from a masterful lyricist and singer.
  5. Yep just gone for this too. Top drawer artist.
  6. The young guy dancing featured in the early part of the clip is Jason Katterhorn I believe. Often attends the Banbury Soul nights too. A very good dancer who happily dances to classic stompers and 'old school modern' through to tracks like this and pretty much everything in between. Good attitude. Although I'd find this pace tough to dance to nowadays for any sustained period, this clip does make me feel I need to go back to Rugby after a very long absence!
  7. Thanks for this Scotters - Juno are showing it as coming soon so will aim for that.
  8. I used to swap tapes with Dave Hitch in the 80s - that man seemed to get hold of an endless supply of tracks that struck me as excellent quality soul, all to the best of my knowledge new stuff he was buying week after week. With regard to new releases now, as Winford mentions, Timmion are releasing very good stuff, Colemine too, and Kimberlite. There's also of course the thread on New Releases in the All About The Soul section of this website.
  9. Radio 4 Front Row about to cover Marvin Gaye's "You're the Man" album. Thursday 4th April 7.15pm.
  10. Arrived today - once again very nicely packaged and a great single. 'Garden of Love' is the track for me. Thanks Alex.
  11. Good news Alex - looking forward to getting this shortly!
  12. Sounds like There's Gonna be a Showdown.
  13. 2 great examples of lyrics that always caught my ear! I've been trying to remember a few more in a similar vein and will post as soon as the old brain kicks in...
  14. I'm sure we've all missed out on great records when they were released over the years, for all sorts of reasons. Much as I think this track is excellent - for those who missed it on vinyl, take heart from all the comments about the download, the posting on YouTube, Expansion LP if still available. Compared to the days of tape-swapping, things are radically different. Listening to the music is the big thing, ideally via any format that means the artists get their due.
  15. Sounds very good Alex - thanks for posting this.
  16. Got one of the 2nd pressings (yellow) on it's way, along with the Three Baby Cuffs 'My my my baby' so looking forward to the post.
  17. There's this on the website, bit sketchy....
  18. Ditto ditto.
  19. It's the soundtrack that got my interest, good to hear it lives up to the promise.
  20. Bloody hell - well done Green Book, Best Film at the Oscars, plus Mahershala Ali for supporting actor. Not popular with Spike Lee, but I'm interested to find out more about the soundtrack, still haven't seen the film - hope to do so soon.
  21. Got mine ordered - happened to check my email an hour after the notice came through; had a listen and definitely one to buy.
  22. Agree, got a copy when I ordered my Durand Jones, two very good records.
  23. As mentioned by Amsterdam Russ the internet has brought about quite a change. Back when knowledgable soulies were poring over record lists and doing their best to get through over the phone to buy the desired tracks, the closest I got to that was buying soul packs and hoping I'd like most of what came through. Nowadays, although the vast majority of the new releases pass me by, notices here on Soul Source and randomly checking a few label websites to see what's around has meant I've bought a few new releases (including the Diggin' Deep Sir Ted Ford that has just been announced for pre-order about an hour ago) over the past year or so. But one of the pleasures of doing this for me is when the package arrives; unpacking, seeing the record(s), and then actually listening to it on the turntable. Thanks to the internet I have already heard the track, and hence decided to buy it, but there's just something still special about getting that record and putting it on the deck and settling back to just listen. And then flip it over and do it again.
  24. Just received mine (along with Kelly Finnigan too). Both records are great double-headers and I like the stamp in the run-out groove that reads 'Well made music' - very true!
