  1. Love it! I must have heard it in the day, but having picked up a copy of the song by The Temprees that version sank in and until now I had just allowed myself to think it was their song rather than a cover version. Sticking to the Danny Monday bit though (before this posting gets moved!) - I was lucky enough to get a copy in a soul pack years ago. Sadly, it's just a pressing. Always loved it, along with the tremendous B-side "Good taste of love".
  2. Excellent! Really pleased to read this.
  3. The emails lead to links to listen to the tracks, so for me it's a simple job of deciding if I like the record enough to buy it. Inevitably, if you like one there's a strong likelihood you'll find the rest appealing too. In my case, I've bought all except the 2nd disc - I liked it but not quite enough to buy it at the time, and by the look of things there's no going back on that decision now!
  4. Can't stand Facebook but thankfully as you say, the message comes out via email which is how I heard about it.
  5. I managed to get hold of it via Simply Soul - great record Nick and thanks for getting this out.
  6. It was waiting for me here when I got home - many thanks for the message @Andybellwood .
  7. I have to confess to having enjoyed Soulboy and then, when it came out, loved Northern Soul. Very much about nostalgia, and in both films there were loads of details and aspects of storyline that were radically different from my own experiences: None of my trips to Wigan were in an ice cream van (Soulboy obviously!), and I never did drugs, but I did love it. For me, Northern Soul did capture the essence of the time and venue, despite lots of aspects of the storyline that weren't my story. Still loving the music, and still buying the odd record here and there. Despite the growing realisation that I probably can't listen through to all of the singles, albums, 12" ers and CDs that I already have before I die, there's something about hearing new music that you like that is just irresistible!
  8. Just had a message to try Simply Soul - gone ahead and seems ok, fingers crossed!
  9. No luck myself - emailed Record Kicks and they told me to follow them on Bandcamp and I should hear this coming week. Puzzled, hopeful.
  10. Sorry to hear this and thanks for the tunes posted above, poignant reminders of his music.
  11. First drive-through record bar I've seen!
  12. Same experience myself in one of the shops on Bleeker St (maybe the same one) back in 2002 - consistent if nothing else!
  13. Some photos here from quite a few years back, but a few shops (like The Thing in Greenpoint) that might still give a flavour of ones that have stayed put: Have a great trip! Not sure why the links don't show correctly but they do seem to work if you click on the box with the question mark in it. In order, they are of these albums on Flickr: NYC Records and shops April 2010 Greenpoint Brooklyn NYC record shops Easter 2008 New York Records October 2007 New York Soul Easter 2006
  14. I've just posted in the 'New Releases' thread that mine arrived today. Great stuff Sean!
  15. I can see why you'd say that Joe, but having bought the LP when it came out while only having been getting into the scene for a year or two, this was an inspiring eclectic mix that expanded my horizons (thankfully). As Ian's notes indicate, the focus was "dedicated to the real thing", and although I loved and still enjoy lots of pop stuff that was part of what got played at many venues, I suspect this was a timely jolt for those of us who might so easily have overlooked the depths of quality and history that really underpinned the music we were hearing. The breadth of music that can get a hearing at soul events nowadays seems astonishing, and I think that projects like this album and input from many pioneering individuals and clubs before and since have kept this alive and continuing to thrive for pretty much 55 / 60 years now!
  16. Arrived today. Both sides sound great. Sam's voiceover towards the end of 'What's it gonna be' comes in rather loudly and then the whole track fades out to end, but it doesn't detract from a superb tune (well, two of course) from a masterful lyricist and singer.
  17. Yep just gone for this too. Top drawer artist.
  18. The young guy dancing featured in the early part of the clip is Jason Katterhorn I believe. Often attends the Banbury Soul nights too. A very good dancer who happily dances to classic stompers and 'old school modern' through to tracks like this and pretty much everything in between. Good attitude. Although I'd find this pace tough to dance to nowadays for any sustained period, this clip does make me feel I need to go back to Rugby after a very long absence!
  19. Thanks for this Scotters - Juno are showing it as coming soon so will aim for that.
  20. I used to swap tapes with Dave Hitch in the 80s - that man seemed to get hold of an endless supply of tracks that struck me as excellent quality soul, all to the best of my knowledge new stuff he was buying week after week. With regard to new releases now, as Winford mentions, Timmion are releasing very good stuff, Colemine too, and Kimberlite. There's also of course the thread on New Releases in the All About The Soul section of this website.
  21. Radio 4 Front Row about to cover Marvin Gaye's "You're the Man" album. Thursday 4th April 7.15pm.
  22. Arrived today - once again very nicely packaged and a great single. 'Garden of Love' is the track for me. Thanks Alex.
  23. Good news Alex - looking forward to getting this shortly!
  24. Sounds like There's Gonna be a Showdown.
  25. 2 great examples of lyrics that always caught my ear! I've been trying to remember a few more in a similar vein and will post as soon as the old brain kicks in...
