  1. Wow, fascinating stuff, and as Chalky says, the Lenny and the Illustrators sounds brilliant. I had a quick look at the website and subscribed to their emails - had to tick a checkbox to prove I'm human
  2. Sad to say this campaign is really important to me. My wife, Christine is featured if you go into the personal stories. The thrust is to make us all much more aware that the stereotypes of how people get lung cancer stop people from realising that there's only one certain factor - all you need to get lung cancer is to have lungs. https://tinyurl.com/66jr6rkf https://www.allyouneedislungs.org.uk If you're on social media it would be great if you could share the main (2nd) link and spread the word.

  3. It'll be the Rance Allen for me, both sides equally strong.
  4. All 4 programmes have probably been on before, but if you're at a loose end this evening you can watch: Hitsville, the Making of Motown (19.30 - 21.30) Mr Dynamite, the Rise of James Brown (21.30 - 11.45) Marvin Gaye, Behind the Legend (11.45 - 1.05) The Barry White Story, Let the Music Play (1.05 - 2.20)

  5. Fair comment. I did think Michelle David & the True-Tones hit a decent pace with 'Good, Good, Good' a couple of years ago:
  6. It's good. I always liked the original, though I only had it on the Inferno UK release.
  7. Bobby's pretty much my favourite artist too Peter, and this 2000 release on Grand Central Records with him featured on 'Get a Life' by Rae&Christian was a brilliant combination of talents.
  8. What a great article and the thread makes brilliant reading too. Like one or two others on here I went for the soul packs, and what an education they were. The range was immense, and it was always fascinating to see how different the pairing of the 2 sides on one record could be. As years went by I'd often find my taste changed to favour the side I'd thought wasn't so good when I first decided what to write on the sleeve. I never did have that buzz of trying to phone through for a specific record from the lists, but I do have very happy memories of getting the soul pack and trying to work out what I wanted to play first along with creating little piles of ones I thought I liked most, ones to check again, and, it hurts to think of this, ones I planned to get rid of. Very few in that last group thankfully, and if I'd known how my tastes would expand and change then I'd have kept every last one!
  9. Thanks for the artist name - I'd not heard the track or of him either. Just checked it out on YouTube, nice one!
  10. I've been playing mine and very happy with the quality of the whole package. Enjoy them when you get the chance Chalky! Sorry to hear that - I hope you get it sorted without too much hassle.
  11. That's right, I was really surprised to see it today instead of next Friday - no complaints though!
  12. Starting to land. My set arrived this morning. Look and sound great.
  13. Any idea if it will be made available for non-subscription TV?
  14. I'd seen the Stafford section before but interesting to see it in the context of the whole programme
  15. Laura Nyro's 1971 album, 'It's Gonna Take a Miracle' is worth getting hold of.
  16. I'd love to hear more about the Souleros scene and the records they've featured on their CDs. I've always enjoyed the range of styles on the alternate sides to Northern 45s I've bought, and love the Sean Hampsey Lowrider Kent compilation CDs. Given the overlap with our scene here in the UK, you've got to love the 'Northern Souleros' tag they've chosen, with the 45 insert graphic too. For me, Lowrider soul is a beautiful side aspect of the soul music I'm into. It's not quite the instant 'grab' of tracks that just sound right irrespective of my ability to dance as I thought I could back in the 70s. But it's brilliantly evocative music that demands your attention, and seeing that video with such committed collectors kind of wakes up your senses. Might have to sort the BBQ skills out!
  17. What a great little film, beautiful soundtrack and some dedicated diggers there. Thanks for sharing this.
  18. Not sure if this has been posted, couldn't see it by searching: Box set of Shrine 7" from Ace https://www.acerecords.co.uk/shrine-records-rare-soul-sides-washington-dc-1965-1967
  19. Interesting question. I do normally look at the posts specifically because the thread is about new releases. I'm interested in the unreleased older recordings as well as the newly recorded tracks. But I'm probably guilty of just going in and reading/listening more than reacting/commenting. I think that like @Twoshoes, whether I react tends to be driven by if I think I'll buy it, and if so I might leave a comment too. I don't really feel it's fair to the people recording and issuing these records to deliberately note that their record doesn't do it for me, as there will have been a huge amount of work and hope gone into it. I guess another reason I'd not normally leave a negative comment is that my reaction is normally very quick. I click play and it either 'gets me' or I just move on. Don't know about the rest of you here, but while the one that clicks with me tends to stay as one I like, there have been plenty of times when I initially thought a track wasn't that great, but hearing it again at different times I have found it grows on me.
  20. Great article. This was a performance that I absolutely loved, back in 1999 on Jools Holland.
  21. He did, 1972 on Koko. It'll be nice to add this new release to keep my copy company.
  22. Love the Tommy Tate, heard it quite a few years back, not sure where, but what a great record.
  23. Sad news. Covered In the Guardian too: https://www.theguardian.com/music/2024/feb/08/henry-fambrough-dead-spinners
