"Backwards into pure nostalgia"? Not too sure if we are on the same page here? This isn't personal and it's not going to be a dig at you honest. Nostalgia, of course there is going to be a massive degree of nostalgia. We are mostly middle aged. Fact, the young aren't queuing up to buy Spencer bags, fact, there is new music found, played and loved. I have been into this scene since I was 16 and I am now 45 just when I think I have heard every soulful tune going I am constantly, weekly reminded how good and fresh n vibrant the scene is! I am lucky to live in South Yorkshire were northernsoul is as deeply rooted as our coal seams, The Frobisher soul Night the other week for instance I heard track after track that was new to me, fookin brilliant. I took my youngest son to Eggborough the other week, his first ever soul do and he threw some shapes on the floor n busted some moves like a good un, I was well proud of him but he aint ever gonna wear pollyvelts n a Wrigley belt. As me old pal Polly palmer used to say in Manifesto... its only a night out. You can't kill what has never lived. The music will just get a bit dusty until its right for the next bunch of soulies to dust off n boogie. I'll finish this with one last thought, our scene has never been so good.

Revival Simon, I think it's a forgone conclusion that we will end up "looking like 'The Last of The Summer Wine' with a better soundtrack". There are not enough youngsters on the scene to carry it on after we are dust. So what I say? Northernsoul is ours, it's not a precious legacy that has to be passed down, its only precious if those who hold think it so and if they don't then hey" fook em!! No one has a crystal ball, but here is my prediction based on what happened to the Mod/Scootering scene that mirrors our in a slightly different way but the passion is identical..... Were the mod/Scootering scene bubbled up with volcanic proportions was after the film Quadrophenia. This cave "New blood" into the scene. The Northernsoul scene, I predict needs to or will do, die to raise phoenix like. What this will need is a catalyst that captures the imagination as did Quadrophenia, The Strange world of northernsoul sadly fell well short of the mark. There is no formula, it's not enough just to know our music is quality, if in time some one re-discovers the re-discovered and it captures the imagination again then they will be off. God bless them coz they are in for a roller coaster of a ride, be nice to see it happen but we kinda all know we will be long forgotten, bugger! The Punk scene came just as the youth were disillusioned with the shat on Top Of the Pops and the northernsoul scene was a secret under ground scene spawned against the chicken in a basket and crushed velvet jacket night clubs (yes I know there is more to it than that but I want to go and eat lunch soon!). "The average age of the average Northern Soul punter is creeping towards the mid fifties and ill health (and worse) is becoming an issue for many". Didn't realy need reminding of that! As far as the legacy is being tarnished by the rantings, well to be honest, no one listens, cares or realy gives a flying fook at what is said by a DJ or record dealer come collector, honest! There is life out side the record box. They're all a bunch of train spotters who I used to take lunch money off at school who need the likes of "Soul Source" (tongue in cheek here dudes) to maintain the myth. Fook me are there any dancers on this list? Coz I think I'm the only expert on here? :-) Wahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Reaching For The Best by the Exciters

White Horses- Rupert the Bear Jacky Lee Not too sure whether to add this to the "Divvies" thread or to start this as a separate animal? Well here goes, Jacky Lee, singer of White Horses a brilliant melancholy tune used by a TV Show of the same name also did "Rupert the Bear" a clip clop of a TV theme that makes you tap your toe at the tick tock rhythm. Now this is where I enter into "Rumour control" and Northernsoul myths n legends. There is a link between Northernsoul and Jacky Lee: But what I want to know is this........... Were was the track "Rupert the Bear" played? Was it played? I heard it was? Not too sure if it was on the sister scene "The Mod Scene" but I'm sure it got some plays by the trendy bendy wendies darn sarf. Maybe Ady Crowsnest played it? From Wikipedia "Lee decided to become a solo artist in 1965 and it is this period, 1965-1967, which defines her cult status through the 'Beat' records she released. Although most of these recordings were not commercially successful at the time, all of them are highly collectible today.[citation needed] One of these recordings did reach the NME chart however; "Just Like a Man". The B-side; "I Gotta Be With You", became a 'Northern Soul' classic. Lee recorded this single under the name of Emma Rede for EMI Records."

We all know there are records well and truly in the "cringe" category. But I think there are three "Cringe" categories... 1. The "Crap Cringe" Always a dodgy one here as "One mans meat is another's poison" but generally speaking there are tunes played on the scene that make ya cringe coz they are either soulless or just crap, these shouldn't be confuse as "Played out", these are the actual crap ones! The Joker-Mylestones, Superlove - David & The Giants, Nine Times Out of Ten - Muriel Day, Al Wilson - The Snake, The Flasher - Mistura (Featuring Lloyd Michels), Ventures - Hawaii 5-0, Gary Lewis & The Playboys - My Hearts's Symphony, Brian Hyland - The Joker went wild, and any thing that is unlistenable shit including most crossover and modern soul. 2. Then we have The "Divvy Cringe" 'Tailor Mades', records produced specifically to feed the Northern Dance Craze and again murky water because not all of them where, they just sounded like they where! "Lenny Gamble - I'll do anything, Loving On The Losing Side - Tommy Hunt, Our Love is in the Pocket - J.J. Barnes, Nine Times Out of Ten - Muriel Day, Our Love is in the Pocket - J.J. Barnes, The Wigan Joker - The Royal Vibes, The Theme from Coloured Man - Teddy Vann, Out of my Mind - Rain with Charity Brown, Captain of my ship - Seventh Wonder, The Exciters - Reaching For The Best, Jay & The Techniques - Apple Peaches Pumpkin Pie, The Formations - At The Top Of The Stairs, The Four Vandals - Wrong side of town. Barry Gray - Joe 90, Northernsoul inc - Something keeps holding me back 3. The "Unfair Cringe" Records. These are the soulful tunes that have been hijacked or bushwhacked not just by the Divvies or for the Divvies but for the general public, who lets face it, are all a bunch of fookin divvies. I think the Divvies most heinous crime is to make Joe Public believe that this is the Northernsoul Scene, have we now lost some superb tunes to the land of the Divvies? Tainted Love - Jones, Gloria, Seven Days Too Long - Wood, Chuck, Lost Summer Love - Silver, Lorraine, Cause You're Mine - Vibrations, Madeline Bell's 'Picture Me Gone'. Jerry Butler - Moody Woman, Bobby Hebb - You Want To Change Me, Mickey Moonshine - Name It You Got It. Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons - I'm Gonna Change. Better Use Your Head - Little Anthony and the Imperials, Frankie & Johnny - I'll hold you? Now before you all start grenading me please remember that I am not a full time member of the soul police, I just help them out every now and again. Besides at the end of the day I kinda always was and always will be...... a Divvy like you, its just that I want the Yum Yums - Gonna be big thing and the Charades - The key to my happiness back from the Divvies because they are burnt into my soul.

Got a kind of lovely story and a bit of a confession, don't worry coz it links in with the ultimate "Divvy" tune. Some time ago a few of us got together to raise a bit of dosh for charidy, can't remember what the fook it was for but some worthy cause like Red Nose day or Live Aid, Pete Smith should remember? The idea was for an e-bay like auction of Northernsoul records and memorabilia, Pete can you remember mate? Mick Fitzpatrick set up the mechanics on the web via The KTF. I had spoofed Wigan's Ovation some time before on The Imber village Soul Club site https://www.tafsc.com/Imbersoul6.htm Believe it or not Jim McClusky, the lead singer of Wigan's Ovation contacted me and said that he wanted me to auction a very special piece of Casino memorabilia. Jim told me a story of how Mike (Walker,) who was the manager of Wigan Casino wanted to have a "keep sake" for the fans, he came up with the idea of a T-Shirt with a print of the Casino. Mike had one T-Shirt made as a sample. The T-Shirt idea was dropped in favour of the "Soul badge" and never went into production. Mike gave the shirt to Jim so that he could wear it at the Casino the night they played belting out such goodies as "skiing in the snow", "Northern Soul Dancer", "Personally" and Ady Crowsnest's fave "Superlove" Jim wore the shirt when they appeared on Top of the Pops, they appeared 13 times in total. Jim sent me the shirt along with a letter of authenticity he wrote. Sadly the auction collapsed due to a "hacker". I made was left with the shirt so I made a donation to Cancer research. I still have it now, it is a real and I believe precious piece of our sub culture history, better than a brick? I think so. "I got Super love..........................." Fookin ultimate Divvy, ultimate souvenir.... "Heart ache souvenir" brilliant record that n far from a div tune.

Now if it had been released by Frank Popp it would be as clever as fook! I recon its time to certainly crack Baja Marimba Band Along Comes Mary out again! I luves it!!! wheres me flares?

The Hawaii 5 0 theme (regarded as "the greatest TV theme of all time") but it don't beat "Snowy White Horses" by by Jackie Lee! The Hawaii 5 0 theme was originally on the "Divvy" label, very rare indeed and I have two copies. No how about Sammy Davis Jr. - You Can Count On Me (Theme from Hawaii 5-0) !! "I'm gonna be sick" Not Northernsoul but one of the best hard corps in yer face dance off tracks ever........ On white horses let me ride away To my world of dreams so far away Let me run To the sun To a world my heart can understand It's a warm and gentle wonder land Far away Stars away Where the clouds are made of candyfloss As the day's born When the stars are gone We'll race to meet the dawn So when I can only see the grey Of a sad and very lonely day That's when I Softly sigh On white horses Snowy white horses Let me ride away

P.S Have you forgiven me for The Imber? https://www.tafsc.com/Imbersoul1.htm :-)

Divvies Divvies, Remember that word? I can, "Divvies", well this was the derogatory name for "Jim and Barbara" and for people who "didn't know their stuff" I remember getting on a coach in Hull as a very young spotty faced lad on the way to Wigan Casino. The "Big Boys" were all sat at the back, Paul n Paddy Smith, Martin Sayner, Sean Russlin, Martin Byrd and Rocky. I sat well up front not daring to look back too much. I was with Timmy Peacham (Sadly gone now well before his time RIP) and Mark Robinson, I suppose the complete set of Hull Soul Club was on that coach? We set off from out side The New York pub at the top of Anlaby road and I was shitting my self! I have since stormed machine gun nests and enemy trenches in Iraq and Afghanistan and not been so scared! The year was probably 1980 although it may well have been 1979? It's all a bit fuzzy now and my memory chooses to do its own thing, I can't remember the trip there much, to be honest I can't realy remember what I heard that night musically, I do remember the flavour of the conversations thought! Back in nineteen hundred and frozen to death we had, probably the same as kids do now, buzz words that were cool to use. Half the time we didn't know what they meant but adding them into the conversation was thee thing to do. I remember using words like black bombers, ionamine, Tenuate dospan, Filon, I sounded like a fookin chemist yet I couldn't tell you the difference between Aspirin and Dexamphetamine I daren't take anything! It was cool to talk about that stuff as if you were "in". Looking back now I see how scary it all was especially as I now have sons and a daughter of that age! I remember the biggest buzz was talking records, this was a fookin mine field as every one else seamed to have "oracle" like knowledge of the black disks and I knew fook all! I suspect that most of us were in the same boat back then, don't forget every fooker seams to be an expert now days thanks to CD sleeve notes books and the internet. I must admit to being a little pissed off when I hear a "Nuevo" expert or collector who knows more now than me! Don't they realise how many hours I have spent listening to my cassettes! I couldn't afford the bleedin records back then! When I look back at the stuff that got me into Northern in the first place the list of tracks that inspired me and became part of me are now almost taboo, we all know and love them yet the likes of "Interplay" and "A Touch Of velvet A sting Of Brass" are now only played by the brave or the stupid. At what point did these tracks become "Divvies" music? Was it because they were over played at The Casino? Was it because they became the anthems bleeding over to Joe "Divvies" Public and creating the stereo type baggy trousers n bowling shirts? I can understand the hatred towards a misinformed public back in the late seventies and early eighties, but why did we begin to hate the music? Was that music just a casualty of the day; was it an acceptable loss in order to protect the deeper soul? I personally believe that this loss is unacceptable! "Divvies", are they the ones who dance to "Wigan's Ovation"? Are they? Coz I think that the real "Divvies" are the ones who "Poo Poo" the classics yet freak out to "FRANK POPP ENSEMBLE"!!!!! or the likes of fookin Carbon Copy!!!!! I dug out some of my old "Youth Club" soul this morning and tried very hard to listen past the cringe factor and hey, Interplay is quite fookin good and A Touch Of velvet A sting Of Brass still moves me to a special place, not a special place where people lick windows, it warms me and it always did! So how about it, are there any tracks that deserve another chance? Who would play them, what you play and who is brave enough to loose the cool n dance to them? The cool dudes can only be realy cool if you drop the conceptions; I'm cool as fookin mustard and its you that's the "Divvies" Love Peace and Lentils, Imber Rocks. Yours ImberBoy :-) P.S My fave divvies track is "What" Judy Street followed by A Touch Of velvet A sting Of Brass. "Whaaa wha ... wha wha wha wha wha wha........
