Hi Paul, I've read that Duffy was "influenced" by her Northern Soulie parents, and let's not forget how hugely instrumental Dusty Springfield was in getting USA soul artists to the UK in the 60's. I'm generally of the opinion that the only difference between a "Northern" sound and many "Pop" sounds, is success -or the lack of it. Our scene leans towards the lesser known underdog. But what if those artists had been succesful? Surely they were all striving for popularity and I don't think any artist should instantly be transferred to another genre of music once they have achieved this. It's always a tough one to call, and an emotive subject for so many of us. I do like your description of Northern Soul as not a type of music but as a scene. Considering all the variances of music played within the scene your description seems the most apt. Trouble is - how do I now describe "Northern Soul" to an inquisitive youngster? It was difficult enough trying to describe the music! I can see it now - "Well, is Duffy Northern Soul then?"... ."er..it sort of depends where it's being played" Respect Kev

It was a good night, and nice to chat with you Marcus. Nothing like picking an Irish Centre to reminisce in. I like your avatar mate - does it bring back painful memories Thanks for the little nod re NI too . It's a much nicer place now. I've been back a few times and had a couple of nights out over there. I often feel a bit cheated though by missing out on the Falklands and all that has followed. There'll be a bit of a Sapper reunion as usual at the "Cream Cracker" on 22nd March. They'd better dance in time when I'm on the decks . I'm looking to get up to one/some of Reg's nights soon (once I find the dates) so no doubt catch you there. -Kev

No of course you didn't Chalky and I didn't mean to infer that. I just couldn't understand why you said "what's she got to do with soul though?" Apart from being black, which I've seen some on here state as prerequisite, she has all the other attributes required IMO. -Kev.

Let's be honest Chalky, this is more "soulful" than a lot of dance tracks on the Northern scene. Surely it doesn't have to be black to be soulful? And you've already said that being from the present is not necessarily a bad thing. Regarding the pop singer comment - true, but let's not forget that this is a music business. The vast majority of the artists we hold in high regard were striving for popularity. Motown changed arrangements and brought in outside choreographers in attempts to break into the pop market. And we know how many lesser known artists and record companies tried to emulate and cash in on the success of early Motown. The main difference between pop music and many underground sounds can be summed in one word IMO- Failure. Failure due to lack of talent, but often down to marketing. This young lady, said to be influenced by her Northern Soul loving parents, clearly has a good voice and I enjoy listening to her. In the last couple of weeks, from those within and bordering on the Soul fraternity and within the music business, I have never heard such a buzz about a new release. Good luck to her. A VG+ copy went on ebay for £46 in the last few weeks. There was a thread on here where someone else had the same question. I think various guesses ranged from £25 - £70. Nice tune! -Kev
