I'm gonna start buying Hillbilly vinyl, and hope they pack it out with some rare Northern shite.

I just wondered if this was at an allnighter - and as she looks, speaks, and acts like a 15/16 yr old, how old Lottie actually is? There's probably a difference between being polite when confronted with something that is already happening, and airing your views on whether it should in fact have happened in the first place. I don't know - perhaps Simon can explain. Regarding the lad Ethan, and unfortunately for him he's being used as an example as he's the only one I have seen that I can name......... I was pleasantly surprised to see him on the floor at an alldayer, I was surprised to hear that he was at a soul night, and I would be shocked to see him at an allnighter. You really shouldn't be confused - you won't like them but just look at the poll results. The few "yes" votes probably account for the few parents that think kids at allnighters is acceptable, oblivious to the fact that the rest of us think otherwise. No exceptions, and "passion" really doesn't come into it. I was passionate about a lot of things as a kid but couldn't indulge myself untilI I ran away from home at 16 to escape the beatings that came with having my own way. And you know what?.....my parents were probably trying to do the right thing, but I didn't learn that until later. I knew fcuk all at 16 let alone at 12 or 13.

I think there's plenty of posts on here that shows kids are welcome at some venues, but the poll is with regards to ALLNIGHTERS. That Ethan lad is a great little dancer and he's 12 (or was when I last saw him). It was a pleasure to see him on the floor. I like kids but I couldn't eat a whole one.

No probs - nothing personal but you just reminded me of the fact that I'm scared of dogs. Some people are, and in my case it probably stems from the number of dogs I had attack me when I was a squaddie in Northern Ireland. Not many dog owners realise that not everyone is as welcoming towards their four legged friends. As for kids - I've been to do's where they were running riot, sliding on talc etc, and a real pain in the @rse. I've also been to do's where some real youngsters had all the moves, and the ettiquette to go with it (no problem there), and I've enthused about them in the event lookback. An Allnighter is a different Kettle of fish though. IMO if they're old enough to get there themselves and blag their way in, that's OK by me. If they're young enough to need parents around, then they shouldn't be there. Kev. P.S. I'm not scared of kids.

Like Chalky says, it's often through ignorance. It's a misconception of elitism maybe - which I find odd because there's plenty in the Top 500 that are pretty rare, and underplayed too nowadays. Perhaps the fact that we do tend to label events as Rare or Oldies etc, contributes to the misconception. Not to long ago I played at an established "Oldies" venue. I played tunes that I love and that I thought would go down well. I was both pleased and surprised when the promoter later said to me "I really enjoyed your set - it does them good to hear something different". Well, I didn't think that they were too different - maybe I play them too much at home and forget that they're not played everywhere. It did make me think though that maybe other guest dj's read the "Oldies" label and think that they have to strictly conform and limit themselves. Obviously not the case, and perhaps a lot of dj's are guilty of adhering to preconceived boundarys when they could be breaking them down.

Russ, I don't recall the term Rare Soul being used prior to the coining of the phrase "Northern Soul". Maybe it depends where you were geographically though. In the late '60s when I began to frequent venues in the Northants area that played rarer and more unusual stuff I'm sure it was just refered to as "Soul", or maybe "Old Soul". My cousin had frequented the same venues a couple of years previously. When she found out I was going regularly she said " Oh, you like R'n'B then?". So, within a few years it had gone from R'n'B to (old) Soul to Northern Soul. Same music, different label. The trouble with pigeon holing is the preconception and misconception that goes with it, and I won't go into the derogatory comments that come flying from people who, mistakenly believe that they are in a different arena. I don't believe that they are. It's one big soul music scene, with variations, and if some stopped being so insular and defensive of what they percieve to be their speciality, they might find that the other pigeon holes aren't really so different. I hope this makes sense - I know what I mean.

I'm with you and Dave on this one. No sale price is particularly frustrating when you see another for sale asking for "offers", and you do a quick search to find what a reasonable offer might be. That usually means I avoid such sales rather than seriously over or under estimating and making a complete pillock of myself.

There are definately 2 versions Kev. One with a younger sounding Gene Woodbury (to my ears anyway). Also the version that isn't on t'other side of "Ever Again", is missing that all important break in the middle. Been a while since I've played either version and I can't drag my boxes out at the moment to verify anything further, including the release numbers.

You're right Nige......so lets turn this into something positive.......... Until the end of last year I was a resident dj at Stolen Hours in Ramsgate. We went through a few changes of venues for a variety of reasons until finally setting up in the cellar bar of the Churchill Tavern, Ramsgate. At the last one I attended Pam and I arrived first so that we could order some food in the upstairs eatery as we live 45 miles away and didn't have time before setting off. We were sat at a table looking at the menu when someone shouted from the bar " I hope you're not wanting food - the power is off downstairs so there's no kitchen!" This was an hour before we were due to be up and running! To cut a long story short, Karen, the Churchill Taverns' landlady, ended up phoning around and found us an alternative venue nearby. Not only that, she took us there initially, re-directed all our punters, and then even turned up herself to help out behind the bar as they weren't geared up for our numbers. We were up and running at the new venue just an hour later than advertised. What a top lady! Why can't all venue managers have this attitude? - Kev P.S. At last a post that confirms my thoughts of Kent as a soul wilderness! I remember in '72 taking vinyl along to the Wig & Gown in Maidstone - J J Barnes, Mel Wynn, Originals, that sort of stuff for the dj to play. Never really caught on though. Just me and a few other exiled squaddies into it. Also looked for a venue more recently and Maidstone's old Comedy Club was suggested but when I got there it was being ripped apart and is now an Indian restaurant. Keith, if you know of any "notable exceptions" other than Kent Soul Club at Rochester, pass the details my way mate. - Kev

Valid points, and I was obviously wrong to presume that any hefty bidder would know what a carver was. Perhaps not wrong to presume that that anyone with sense might be prompted to ASK the seller for clarification though Regarding the label, the following is stated in the sales blurb: VG++ condition (some glue residue on the dead wax from the test press cover up label, plays EX+) .....which some have either not noticed, or not understood. Even so, I just don't think there is any INTENT to confuse or deceive whatsover. There's just so much in the sales blurb that needn't have been there otherwise.

Yes, recording anyones set is despicable, and going on to produce a carver from the recording is too. But....that's a pretty big brush you're tarring "the rest of the London soulies" with Pete. I'm sure you mean "some other London soulies" - Kev.
