Northern Soul's New Blood
ayup KJW the do at Robin hood is more of a Birthday bash i think....? not only that the two "crowds" of Bestwood and Robin Hood are, (from my visits to Bestwood) like chalk N' cheese ....for the most part... and they are also quite a way in distance between ......as for the nighter well that will take from both to a small extent i feel? fair to say though that cos RH is a birthday bash then it would not have crossed ray's mind ... it is true for sure we are spread too thin...too many do's offering the same sort of nite...oldies or more modern....one reason sadly is that some of the local promoters do not all get on with each other anyway...for one reason or another...what a real shame cos they are all nice people in thier own right, they just clash on a personal level...so they go seperate ways to the same goal with the end result...more nites i am so glad i am not a promoter... ( though i do put Rays night up for him, Ray and pc,s dont mix lol ).....we just go and enjoy the nights and the people....and hope everyone has a great time (and wear what they want...including tripping over and making it look like acrobatics ) KTF Pete n' Susan

hi JYMTG ! just to ansmer some of you concerns.... you can really upset people, and afterall the person you upset may be at the next venue you attend ? all too easy when sat behind a keyboard....eh? not a threat at all ..just an observation....not nice to be in a room with someone who has taken the piss or insulted the way you dress etc.so much better to not do it......me?..... i can take it in fun and don't get too out of shape about it on here... and as i have said later on... i do like to hear new stuff.... but not one after the other for an hour.... just blend it... and yes .. in the old days new sounds were in abundance....but they fitted the criteria so well ! .the next place i will be at is the brit on sept 6 im on there with steve brown from annesley come down say hello you might even hear some " northern" is the Brit not the venue that the promoters stole the flyers for another soul nite so that people may attend theirs? ....so we won't be there then... just talking of that one point, have a word with someone you know about this when it comes to putting on an event to clash with well established ones.people who live in glass houses...... i think you must be talking about Ray and the Robin Hood?....same nite as annesley ?.......well i remember the reason was that Annesley was not delivering at that time and was changing towards a not so favorable music policy (which it seems is now reverting ..good eh ? )....sooooooo, Ray put a 100% oldies night on... then a choice could be made as to where you may like to go, just filling the void left on Annesleys dance floor........seems at that time Ray's was more in favour..... oh well...and dont get me wrong.... me and pete taylor get on well....and i love Annesley one thing we do agree on though.... there are too many venues local clashing and we don't need another at the moment.... may try the Attic though ? beats me why the local promoters dont get together some time and sort this lot out...... .....cant be that hard... ? not saying all newer sounds are bad....some are really quite good....but lets face it , the sounds we would hear at such places as the casino , cleethorpes, samanthas, wakefield unity, stafford, notts palais, kayGeeBee, clifton hall, even blackpool mecca etc..(see my pedigree is impecable too ) were such class and were of the sound, the feeling, ...made you want more ..made you want to dance...yes heady days for sure.... trouble is when i have been to venues where they have played such stuff, (the earl of Doncaster last year for one)... i felt for the first time at a soul nite that i did not belong...never felt that before...and that used to be such a good night once upon a time...but for people who like it , well thats ok not visited the attic....maybe i should (can you wear white sox ? ) why have i not been? cos i feel it may be another earl of donny, and another nite wasted.... if more nights that said they play ACB did just that then we may get to hear some without standing around waiting for a dance for an hour....thats what pisses people off ... break new stuff in slowly ..dont ram it down our throats for an hour or more... blend it... not rocket science is it ? bugger.. time to go to work... pete n' susan KTF

actually its not me.... thats rays leg ..... i was there though, but to call rays mid week nite a "dance class" is not accurate at all... its more an exchange of dance knowledge and trying different things....(just like we did when we were lads .. remember ? ) ... and me, ive been "out on the floor" for 37 years and my appitite to learn and enjoy dance never stops....as for the lad he was a super little dancer with his acrobatics ! by heck i wish i could do that... and if the truth was known most others would too now, acrobatics have been a part of "northern soul" for always as i remember ... ? it was not a northern soul develpment though for sure...mum n' dad saw this kind of thing during the war as the americans brought over things like "jitterbug" "lindy hop" "jive" etc ...the like of which they themselves had not seen before...this moved on to rock n' roll. who stole some of it.. and i guess we nicked it too.... it is part of northern soul not as common now but still a part of its heritage... just as "baggies" are too... some of us like to carry this on...(if your still fit enough).. yes we may be in a time warp.. but thats ok is it not ? ...some of the music that people have "moved on " to, i do not care for... but that's me...and many ..many more...it's no use playing what people do not really like so much or "move on" with your music policy and then complain your venue is empty..thats cos not as many care for it...maybe its nice music..perhaps its got some kind of "soul " (i am not talking duffy )..but bottom line is it generally does not fit in with the old northern sound and feel ....for most in this area anyway..so if you wear baggies and love oldies ..do some acrobatics (or try to in my case ) it does not mean as suggested by someone earlier that we lack some kind of superior interlect...or do not have any other kind of "full life"... as the soul police claim to have... ..it is just that we are passionate about how we wish to live, or re live the "northern soul" scene... just as passionate i am sure as the people who have "moved on" (or is it drifting away?) from northern soul.... to get personal with generalisation comments on our local scene is not the best thing to do really...it just creates rifts and rumors... you can really upset people, and afterall the person you upset may be at the next venue you attend ? all too easy when sat behind a keyboard....eh? so bottom line... play new stuff... ok ...but if there are not many there don't blame "the baggies brigade" we are just somewhere else doing what we do.. the best we can... (dodgy acrobatics and all ) and loving every time warp minute !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! time for bed pete n' susan ....(stop snoring susan !!)- Ayup Lads ...want Some Polyveldts?
I wore them as i came out of skinhead to suedehead in the very early 70t's ...loafer style shoes are ok for loafing.....BUT ! if you are a dancer yer don't want shoes falling around on yer feet now do you ?.. im' not talking shufflin around on a bit of talc and strokin my chin here... im talkin "kingsway hall" stuff.... know where i'm coming from? you would be fetchin yer shoes from the otherside of the room with loafers.. get steppin! pete n' susan xx- Ayup Lads ...want Some Polyveldts?
oh well... you can please some of the people some of the time ..etc etc .... LOL. yes they are strange looking shoes.... i like that ..... susans strange too.... but hey pete n' susan ktf xx- Ayup Lads ...want Some Polyveldts?

i can't stand people who throw loads of talc on the floor ...shuffle about for a minute and then go and dance somewhere else ....grrrrrrr better to have a second pair of shoes in yer bag for sticky or slippy floors ... many floors do not even need talc, just seems to be a habit? pete n' susan...xx- Brighouse Ritz

i still have my baggies made at the same tailor who did them in the 70's... keith malinson in rotherham, he is due to retire anytime now, he used to have blackboards outside the shop with all the prices for pockets , channel seams ,turnups etc... he also made jackets, circle skirts ....and still does now ! we would pay a deposit and pay weekly till he would hand them over he is a true "old school" tailor and a gem to chat to, makes wicked clothes to die for in true northern soul style !- The Ritz Ballroom
there is some sort of preservation order on it ...but at what level,? talking to ginger at the ritz the other month and he said they hope for at least another year.... lets hope so ! next Ritz... april 18th 16th may and a special tribute to tony banks on 23rd may KTF- Muriel Day

great days indeed ! Bub, what a great dj, "no requests cos i know what ya f***** want" was one of his opening lines..and he did too ! and if he played something that did not go down too well i saw him more than once take it off half way through ...cursing and throw it away over his shoulder tracky club.....fab little place, what memories.. and what about the "windmill" at rotherham.... great soul sessions there too ! casper- Brian Rae Where Is He ?

good man! ....wear what is you as an individual and with your conviction, some will like it some will not ...but hey, it's all about choice and respect, baggies are "the way" for some of us,.... including me.... pete n' susan, ktf ...dance it.... wear it... live it ! northern soul!- Sticky Dancefloors
everyones "ideal" dancefloor is not the same.... depends how you dance i guess ? slider, stepper, stomper, acrobat, 2 steps.....and the list goes on....best to have potions and shoes in yer bag.... from 2 pair of shoes , to talc, soap, and even spray brake cleaner for the ice rink floors to slow em down and make em safe... best dance floor for me has to be brighouse ritz....it must rise n' fall 4 inches it's that well sprung, just the right amount of traction to push but slippy enough to slide n spin...heaven !.... and with no addatives except a great floor ! casper- Yes Or No
That's your opinion yes it is .. for me....thats me... not everyone ... not you you listen to soul with your ears not your eyes true...then put it to your feet n' dance...unless you have become a "chin stroker? besides i would not want to not see and trip over my 1" turnups and where were their tongues in relation to their cheeks? hey , if they say nice things thats ok is it not, if they don't mean it , well ok too ... but what would the point in making the effort to say such things to a person ? oh well if clothes don't make a soulie why do you try to keep "northern soul alive in a visual way? cos its good fun and does keep alive visualy and with tradition the image of what it was at the time some of us of an age group were there..? that's your opinion not mine yes it is.. My opinion is that baggies and vests on middle age men look bloody ridiculous. er... unless your fit as f*** like me.. casper- Yes Or No
wear what you want really...me, i wear baggies etc, cant dance in anything else ..just does not feel right ? what do people think ? well, to me it keeps "northern soul alive in a visual way, (bit like a renactment group i guess) only comments i have ever had is such things as "where did you get them ?, they look superb etc... and to me they do give the "look" of northern soul , just as full circle skirts do for the girls.... there is just somthing nostalgic and wonderful about "how it was"... it adds that extra "something" to any soul nite...putting on something special, making an effort, living the life , walkin the walk and talkin the talk ! sure, some don't feel good about them anymore, clothes don't make the soulie, but it's not about that, it's keeping it alive for yourself, 18 again for just a few hours, i was at Brighouse the other month, talking to a fellow soul clothes wearer, we were talking about the fantasic atmosphere it has there, then he said to me imagine if everyone made the effort and dressed for the nite? ....well neck hairs prickled as i visualised it ..wow what a nite that would be. baggies are not so available now , mine are still made to mesure at the same shop as in 75...by the same wonderful guy. we are in the minority for sure, but they sure as hell look better on a dancer than tight jeans and a flowery shirt,... just another thought... people who dress in a way that follows their style of music or whatever always look good, it's what you expect to see, it's how it is, imagine teddy boys or rock n' rollers , punks, skinheads, goths, emo's, etc all wearing "normal "clothes....does'nt add up does it ? keep wearing them, don't ask others , do what you believe.....and for those that slagg us off, well take a peak in the mirror too eh? casper.... keepin the faith, inside and out ! - Northern Soul's New Blood
