  1. Ian I was at Hotwax allnighter in Leeds on Sunday, the main rooms was oldies based & a bit flat but upstairs was the R n B room which was buzzing with loads of 20/30 somethings giving it loads. They were just out to have a good time, listening to some brilliant tunes It was the first time in awhile I'd thought the scene might survive in this country after us, they didn't seem to have the political baggage we do???? Made me feel we've lost a little of that spark. Cheers Martyn
  2. The reason I answered your thread was the fact you called the music I was going out listening to most weekends "Shit", I didn't slag your part of the scene off. I can with a serious face tell you the new stuff is northern soul. I've enough time & miles in to have an informed position & some of the new stuff is as easily as good as the old stuff..........equally some of it is crap as some of the old stuff was crap.........don't forget there was crap stuff played in the old days as well. I think you are confusing personal choice with good or bad music??So if you've got all the music you need for night's you might as well turn up with a laptop with all the files on do away with the dj. As you say if you had to come into my world you would say "shove it" if I was having to join your world & travel the length of the country to hear sounds I loved when I 18/20 I'd be in your gang & say "shove it" You are saying the only way forward is to go back but I want to keep the ethos that was drilled into me as a wet behind the ear young soulie by the older ones that you listen to new sounds & make up my own mind if I liked them or not, as one fades there's always a new on the horizon. I still get that feeling & you don't so that will always be a difference of opion between us with neither of us been right or wrong. The attendance issue isn't just down to musical tastes it's many folded, this has come to light during this thread. If the scene was to stop finding new tunes I would retire disgracefully to my armchair & remote. Cheers Martyn
  3. Carms Lots of valid points, some very personal some spot on. The one that surprised me was the way you just dismiss the nighter scene as if it was to fold tomorrow it wouldn't impact on your life? I know how passionate you are about your music & how giddy & excited you get when you hear something new that blows you away........a good share of those will have been broken on the nighter scene so are you willing to risk that with a shrug of your shoulders & a "So What"??? I was at Hotwax last night seeing a load of young kids (lots in there 20t's) having an absolute ball, it's the first time in a long while I thought the scene will survive over here after we are all long gone. But they aren't going to want a cozy little club night scene, they'll want something with a bit of kudos (as we did). So if we are thinking about leaving a legacy (we might not be thinking of leaving one I don't know???) we need to find away to keep the nighter scene moving forward. Or I think we should keep nighters because I like them & I'll sulk if they stop Cheers Martyn
  4. Ted Ford-You're Gonna Need Me SS7
  5. Steve Sounds about right to me...............by the way what was Susan Boyle like in bed Cheers Martyn
  6. I was stood in alternate room last week with a well respected dj & collector & a forgotten oldie which had a few plays at Wigan but never went massive was played & he didn't know it? So depending which one of us you talked to was wether it was a know or unknown??? So a set to one person might be unkowns & as you say boring but to another person it might be the best set of the night as they know them..........the dj can't win. Cheers Martyn
  7. Never given this a thought until seeing this thread? Didn't miss many weeks between 77 to mid 80 plus oldies nights.Does going up to Carlisle (on the York coach) count when it was shut to add more nicotine to the walls sorry I mean redecorate So 150ish maybe more..........bloody hell. Did stop going when live acts were on, always thought they ruined a good nighter............still do come to think of it? Does anyone have the same problem as me? When I get with some of old mates & we start swapping old Casino stories I can always remember the incidents but I feel as if they all happened in one night???? Maybe I only went once Happy days........I think. Cheers Martyn
  8. So you love the sounds that have packed the floors from all our great clubs such as The Wheel,The Torch,Wigan,Yate,The Mecca & Stafford (not quite sure were your cut off point is for when the shit started)...............emmm I have one slight problem with your view & it is they were all clubs that played & broke new sounds. So if you had applied your rules in the past you wouldn't have any oldies to do your packed nighters with? So if any new Stafford type 60t's are unearthed you'll have them to add to the oldies scene...........why what's wrong with the 60t's type tunes from Wigan or The Mecca. What's wrong with the beat ballads,Latin,70t's/80t's Stafford championed Why are tunes played now that wasn't accepted 15 years ago is that the scene is permanently evolving. From the outset driven by people wanting to move the boundries, seeing if they could eek out some different facet of dance music that might broaden our outlooks & enjoyment. In your view did the Mecca ruin the scene by changing the musical style played or did it make it a far richer place then before they were played???? I'm obviously not one of your "most people" you speek for & I've been getting it terribly wrong each weekend going out in search of hearing new sounds that get me all giddy & excited just like when I was going to Wigan to hear the next new big sound. Cheers Martyn
  9. In the late 70t's picked a Jackie Wilson-It Only Happens When I Look At You Brunswick Demo 20p from Sheridan's second hand record shop in Hull..........still has the 20p written on the label in pencil.
  10. You seem to have made some sweeping statements on the allnighter scene but never ventured above Watford.............Can I make the same ill informed statements about the London scene..........suppose I can as I was at The 100 Club recently been blown away by some of the up-tempo funky type stuff they played..............that I didn't know & danced to???? Cheers Martyn
  11. Simon I think you might have missed one of the longest running nighters that has carried the torch for up front music for 17 years..........yes you guessed it The Wilton!! Cheers Martyn
  12. Kev Mines a beer & fruit based drink for the little lady please. As you say separated at birth :D:D Cheers Martyn
  13. Young Chalky I think that's what I as trying to say but you put far better then me...........as usual. Cheers Martyn
  14. Simon We bump into each other on a regular basis & you are right that soulies have never had such a choice of venues to attend but that is the problem for me,especially nighters??? Ten years or so back there were fewer nighters that were playing the more upfront stuff the 100 club & Wilton spring to mind with others popping up here & there but didn't for whatever reason last the long haul but now there's plenty playing forwad think tunes so dividing the nighter crowd that is shrinking anyway so making it difficult for some nighters to get the right numbers in, this then causes the problems of finance, atmoshere etc. I know this is the way of the world & is the way it's always been & the fittest will survive. Been a passionate promoter putting great line-up's on at top venues doesn't mean succes these days. I'd love to say I've got the answer but I haven't,the only thing I can see solving the problem is fewer venues there by bringing little pockets of soulies together by virtue of the fact there is less places to go.You've only got to look on the events page on here to see how many soul nights/nighters/weekenders there are on each weekend to see that we are at saturation level............on a personal front I rarely get those nights were all the usal suspects meet up at one night.I have to choose were to go each weekend as there's some night with these dj's on I want to hear or some of mates are going to another night at a certain venue I want to go to,some weekends I want to go 3 "do's" on a Friday & 4 on the Saturday so have to choose one or two so miss out on meeting up with some mates or miss out on hearing some tunes I wanted to hear??? As I say I haven't any answers I just find it a pity that I think in the not too distant future we will start losing venues but I think in the long run that might for the good of the scene...........but I could be completely wrong I usually am ask Lynn. Cheers Martyn PS Oh and forgot in amogst all that I've a life to fit in:whistling:
  15. I would think the first reaction would be to rip his head off & sh#t down his neck but the thing to do is take the moral high ground & inform as many people who will listen about the deed that has been done. The next thing to do would be to wait to see if the individual confronts you with his legitimate reason for his actions, a meeting face to face with the individual would be the best thing to see if he has a valid point. If the individual doesn't confront you this is just an admition of his guilt & you know you can hold your head high & live with youself but can he....................then go kick f@ck out of him
  16. What more can i ask for..........The Wilton is only an hour away from me. The way I choose is see who's djing & go from there.Know your dj's know your night.I can go anywhere as long as my mates are there. Cheers Martyn
  17. It's hard enough trying to get some soulies who have been on the scene years to listen to different aspects of the scene never mind try to get someone into it from one CD? This is not a statement I use often but Simon is right, the scene is made up of many facets which need to be sampled simultaneously to have the full experience. Good luck. Cheers Martyn
  18. Mak Another great Bettye Swann double sider is..................The Man Who Said No/What Can It Be on Money...........both cracking dancers. Cheers Martyn

Oh dear, certainly ages me.I was there as 17 year old.In the full version there's some Hull lads I went with(Sean Russlin,Ralph Sayner) putting in an appearance.Filmed over 2 Saturdays if I remember rightly???Remember everyone playing up f#@k about the lights been on,nothing to do with everyone having rather wide eyes. I've watched it a few time & end up squinting trying to see myself in the background but still haven't managed it...............probably don't recognise myself with hair. Cheers Martyn
