  5. Hmm, preordered on Amazon ages ago, still no sign of my copy arriving. According to the latest from Amazon "unforeseen problems have caused a delay" whatever that means. Anyone else not had theirs? Ian, any idea what's going on? Run out of copies?
  6. Hello all. I'd love to have the pleasure of your company this Saturday Dec.6th, 12-2pm for this week's edition of the "All Things Soulful" radio show, with myself "Philly"Dave. Join me for 2 hours of top, across the board soul music. As usual, I've got some brilliant tunes both old & new at the ready + the "2 steps from Heaven" & "Caviar or chips" (duets this week) sections. https://www.365soul.com/ or check out the past shows (with playlists on the Podcast) to see if it's up your street; https://www.podomatic.com/profile/64768 Thanks for your time, and whatever you're doing this weekend, have a good'un
  7. I'd steer well clear of the USB type turntables, all the ones I've come across are of very poor build and sound quality. The Technics are great for playing out, but aren't at their best for home listening. The Pro-ject Essential II is an excellent low priced deck, although you have to move belts manually when swapping 33 to 45rpm. The Rega RP1 turntable is also an excellent value for money item, or look at Marantz. £500-£600 is a pretty low budget, so I'd ensure you have a good deck for starters, a poor amp/speakers may not sound great, but it won't ruin your records like a cheap/poor deck definitely will. Have fun.
  8. "Be my girl" was cut by the O'Jays as part of a contractual deal they made when they signed for Gamble & Huff which promised George Kerr the right to record them for a number of tracks. It was never released as a 7", being found on the 1974 Stang LP (although recorded earlier). The Koala LP contained was a reissue of various Kerr produced tunes, but did not include this track.
  9. Went to see it last night in Letchworth. Firstly they had a showing Fri/Sat/Sun night, they all sold out in double quick time and so they added two daytime showings that also sold out. Great venue too. As for the film, I largely enjoyed it. The directing and cinematography were excellent, and the acting very good on the whole, though Lisa Stansfield showed she's a better singer than actress. Although the film has a Northern soul backdrop, it's just as much about the journey of the main protaganist and his mottley friends. Much darker than I was expecting, with violence and drug taking aplenty. Having said that it also has plenty of lighter moments too. Thought the youth clubs scenes were top notch. Many have said that the huge emphasise on the drugs wasn't a true reflection of the scene, and whilst that is true, the film was using this as a vehicle for the story, it wasn't meant to be a documentary. The music was superb as you would expect, and it managed to capture some of the pivotal moments that soulies go through - the first record - the youth club - first purchases - finiding a monster 45 etc. 7.5/10 for me and will certainly inspire a some of the younger general public to dip their toes in the soul scene.
  10. Off to Letchworth, Hertfordshire to watch it over the coming weekend. It's on Fri/Sat/Sun evening; https://broadway-cinema.com/Browsing/Movies/Details/h-HO00000167
  11. I shall be sharing a few more soulful tunes this Saturday 12-2pm on the "All Things Soulful" show. Some new bits, 2steps, and a bit of jazz in hour1, then the caviar versus chips section (dancers from '82 this week), a bit of Southern soul and some killer 7ts slowies for hour 2. Truly eclectic, across the board choices. Tune in & drop out with me. https://365soulradio.com/ Previous weeks podcasts here (with playlists); https://www.podomatic.com/profile/64768 , Thanks for reading - Dave
  12. Generally have a few beers in the Slug & Lettuce inside the dome beforehand, opposite the little O2 - c u at the bar
  13. Glad someone started this thread, makes me laugh how people make claims like "..seriously rare and hard to find" (from a current SS sale), when you can go on discogs and find multiple copies of the exact same record for less than $10! I'd like to think it's sellers not doing their homework rather than them trying to pull the wool over anyone's eyes -I mean it's not as if the forum is full of uneducated soulies is it?
  14. £150 a seat for the best tickets, and they've all gone for the Friday I think, some people have too much £ lol. The "booking" fee (£7 on top of every £50 ticket is an outrageous Ticketmaster ripoff too) Haven't looked forward to a concert so much since Teena Marie and before that the legendary night in Stoke with the Dells.
  15. The O'Jays are performing their first UK concerts in 20+ years at the O2 arena in September. Just 2 dates, 18th/19th. This will almost certainly be the last time they'll be over. Think this is one of those concerts that is a must for the soulies. Get in quick! PS. They most definitely still have it too.
  16. Yes Mark, Looks like the Virtue copy was '77, whereas the artst then tried it on his own label? Sha Fue in '79. Also came out on a Sha Fue LP in '81.
  17. Ah, yes, that makes sense Steve - 1977 then. tx.
  18. Lol, hear what you mean by lounge singer, but I really like it, and judging by the $ that the later issue goes for, I'm not alone.
  19. Picked this up last year. Didn't see it on the Virtue discog. Bit of a rarity out of Philly. I know it also saw a later release by the artist on his own label, but not seen another copy on Virtue. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rwUGT6jHRqY
  20. Buy the David CD - its packed with magnificent and previously unreleased tracks
  21. Donny Hathaway James Brown Jackie Wilson Lolleatta Holloway Aretha Franklin Teena Marie Today that is, may well change by next week
  22. It may work brilliantly in the short term, but that's acid you're putting on, and it will eat away the vinyl and do no good at all. As for wood glue, then that's pretty neutral as far as vinyl is concerned as its main constituent is a similar vinyl component, though a good professioanl record cleaner will do a better job, and much. much quicker.
  23. Excellent stuff
  24. ANY dishing will affect play, so don't agree with anything saying "slight dish - NAP"
