  1. the sir sidney wallace, "green power," came out on zudan with two different flips: "the grinder" and a ballad whose name escapes me. annoyingly, most copies that say "the grinder" are mistakenly labeled and play that same ballad whose name escapes me. however, i have heard one copy on which "the grinder" is a funk instrumental. does anyone have a copy of THAT that i can buy?
  2. Impossible for me to choose just 5, but here's 10 that never fail to get my motor running...I'm sure I'm leaving out some obvious ones that I like even better than some of these, though... Saxie Russell, "El Monkey" (Ran-Dee) Junius Bugs Hughes, "I'm What the Doctor Ordered" (Hew) Johnny Watson, "I Say I Love You" (King) Hank Ballard, "What's Your Name" (King) Barons, "While the Cat's Away" (Soul) King Coleman, "Black Bottom Blues" (Columbia) Andre Williams, "Thunder Thighs" (unreleased) Melvin Davis, "I Won't Be Your Fool" (Fortune) Willie Spencer, "Riding Shotgun" (Garnet) Billy Watkins, "I'm Tired" (Chartmaker etc.)

  4. Prices in U.S. dollars. Postage: $4 U.S., $6 overseas for one record; $0.50 each additional in U.S., $1 each additional overseas. Registered airmail required for overseas orders over $75 for an additional $10. Note on condition: I don't use any EX grades; VG++ indicates an essentially new, clean record that's been played and may have a small number of paper scuffs or hair scratches that don't affect it much if at all beyond visually. Paypal preferred, and we split seller charges. Please don't PM me; e-mail me at finewine@wfmu.org to reserve 1. 10. one of my all-time favorites! can't believe it isn't more popular (though it's not really a dancer)...fits nicely with the falcons' "good good feeling" and the new holidays' "maybe so, maybe no" as all share that stunning world-is-about-to-end gloomy/beautiful detroit sound....
  11. in my experience limiting the weight on the stylus is not as important for preventing damage to styrene records as the alignment of the stylus...it really must be straight up and down, perpendicular to the grooves. one interesting thing is that a hissy monophonic styrene record can be given new life if you play it with a mono needle instead of the standard stereo needle. the mono needle hits the groove where it was intended to be hit, avoiding damage previously caused by stereo needles hitting it not quite where it was intended to be hit, if you follow me.
  12. i believe it is indeed the same firebirds. one of the exquisites singles on crow is called "stick out your foot and dance" pts. 1 and 2. m
  13. great record!! there are many, many FEMALE versions of this...the strange thing about murphy's version is the words take on an entirely different meaning when sung from a male point of view! it's no longer the standard western idea of a woman demanding her man go out and earn the bread, but a man demanding his woman go out and earn the bread, which of course puts things in an entirely different perspective and suggests a different sort of arrangement, shall we say....
