Thanks Kev Must get over to a soul nite in Dublin /Ireland I have visited the fair city once, the phrase once bitten forever smitten comes to mind Didnt go out dancing sadly (was with the wrong crowd at the time) The Irish know how to enjoy themselves and they know how to make folks feel welcome Much respect Mand

Kev you Know I'm with you on this one! Maybe Its because we a share some of the same commitments I sometimes think promoters want to know why you havent been in the place for months Gary now is "on call" with the job so we havent been out this weekend at all it means we miss some of the regular do's we go to But as I said earlier we go where we can when we can and its our choice you and I both know that the politics can spoil the only decent night out we get! and we certainly don't need it Mand

I'd just like to add that its now 2008 a very different world to the "good old days" most of us travel to do's by car no longer B/Rail or a long bus journey I choose not to wear "the northern soul uniform" any more.. some do (their choice) Wigan is no more ....I understand the phenomenon but NEVER visited..a shame really would have liked to visit. Things enevitably do move on wether any of us like it or not I bought a record I thought was a bargain on Ebay to find that its a bootleg( I assume that didnt happen in the 1970s)...maybe it still is a bargain because I got the same sound in those little grooves as some DJ who paid megabucks for theirs! they pay megabucks for their copy because its an original I bought mine because I like the tune (and its a relatively new sound to me even tho its an oldie) Thats life! Mand

I go to certain soul night because they play the music I like and the music policy suits me I'm definitely not ashamed to say I love oldies so I head for oldies venues. Ive never really liked the term "across the board" IMO It give the DJs /promoters cart blanche to play any crap they want. If a venue has two rooms that states what type of music is played in each room thats fine ..then you can stay in the room that plays what you like. I read somewhere ...that folks were getting sick of the same BIG promoters dominating the scene well this is where the small venues come in. Mak I love fact I have so much to choose from in the midlands ...variety is the spice of life afterall Ive been to venues where the play modern /RnB/crossover/rarities/underplayed/and so on I still prefer oldies ...they have the sound and quality that makes me high/happy without pills!!!! (yet another life choice of mine ) NO ONE owns the soul scene ..its OURS to share Its our own choice as to where we go what we listen to NO ONE is forcing us to go where we dont want to. Be happy whatever you do within the soul scene Im sure theres far too much analysing!!!!! Mand (still a happy soulie)

I soooooo wanted a pretty pair of shoes .... then along came jellybeans with the cut out daisy design Clarks have started doing them again Dont know who made monkey boots
-
OOps sorry!!! I always found it strange that when we went dancing most ladies footwear was either "grannified"= worn by old ladies or butch=worn by skins ie bovver boots I opted for polys and old lady shoes LOL
-
I really have no idea I never liked em tho Chris! always thought they were a bit....butch

Anyone recognise these three ? They were on holiday at skeggy the two sisters were skins they gave my brother a wigan casino badge ( posted on another thread) Just wondered if theyre still around I think they came from over sheffield way.. think one of the skins was called Dawn Mand

A lot of these 'new faces' don't really want to do a nighter, or travel, so local events are increasingly popular. although the younger generation numbers are down theres a lot of people returning to the scene and has been for quite some time now, and these people are not only attending there local events but also the nighter venues and weekenders, i think what weve got to remember is there is a lot more events on nowadays, and a lot more nighters than there was, when people refer to the glory days w/c, mecca, etc there were very few nighters on the go so everyone was concentrated in one place, I have to agree with the 2 above statements When I was young...er If we wanted to dance to N/S it was off to the city to the alldayer/nighter monthly and it was thronging hundreds of customers from all over visiting one venue. Now if I want to dance I can actually walk to the nearest venue then stagger back . Hell I can even drive or taxi 2 miles to the next village where 2 venues run on different times of the month All are well supported. I have even organised a couple myself both attended by 300 the first time( full house all tickets sold) and 250 the second time (during holiday season) Its a fact that as a country we are getting older which means more of the older generation looking for stuff to do with their spare time now kids have gone and they have more cash to spend on themselves. Our local do's have new people coming to a soul nite for the first time ..then coming back every month for more..they too are hooked! Soul scene on its arse?? not a bit, I would say its thriving but the venues are smaller as it has spread further afield to outlying towns and villages giving others a chance to experience what we've known for a long time (that its brilliant) My hat goes off to places like pilsley annesley kingsway hall ..all who have kept the flame alive for us to rise like a phoenix out of the ashes.... ooooo Im fillin up KTF Mand

As a dancer I like to have a certain amount of flow to a DJs set If its not you're up and down like a whores drawers! I like top 500 stuff (I still love our n/s roots) I know some have bored of it (Paul S) I also like old RnB (see my post on how I was influenced "first taste of soul" thread) I like to listen to the random player on soulclub.org which throws some great underplayed stuff Wilbur Walton Jnr 24 hours of loneliness (blast from the past dont get played out) I like Djs who play to the floor and when its empty stop what they are playing and remove the offending vinyl I also understand that not all of us are dancers ..some are listeners and may be enjoying the offending tune without dancing I do like the DJ to tell me whats playing but make it short and sweet not drone on and on about where they first heard it how much it cost them what label its on ...while theyre doing that they could have played another tune!!!! I dont mind the odd comment like "crackin choon" tho Mand
